I think Schwarzenegger is the closest thing we've had to a second Clint Eastwood. He doesn't direct his own movies like Eastwood does, but both of them have demonstrated a keen understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, and have done so much to control their image and how people see them.
I think, as far as his movies go, it's because he's one of the last few and genuine movie stars left. Character bigger than life in his own right. That kind of quality translates to roles and performances all-around.
That and his memorable Austrian accent lol. The latter really worked in his favor in Conan the Barbarian as it made him sound more 'barbaric' to American audiences, hence augmenting the authenticity of his character.

Bago Pamping Iron wasn't documentroy, they staged a lot of situation, and Arnold was playing a charactor, not him self. For example Lou Ferrigno's father never was involved into his training, but they faked it in the movie. I do think Arnold can be sneaky and manipulative person, and I don't think he achived everything the right and clean way, but I am sure he didn't manipulate Franko Columbu.

Arnold is basically a modern day John Wayne: A larger than life guy who basically played himself/the same type of role in all of his work in his youth/majority of his career, but showed a surprising amount of range in his roles towards the end of his career.
Arnie will be forever my all time favorite action hero, there was not a film he did that I ever miss and the fact he still try and do films that are a challenge for him made it more awesome and inspiring, defined agree on that statement, he is truly a gift to cinema history.
When I first heard of Maggie, I was skeptical. The action-hero tank doing a serious movie. But after watching it, I was legit impressed with his acting. I never thought I would get feels and then boom! An amazing actor

Arnold is the kind of actor who could say silly things but gave weight because you felt he and his characters meant it in every way. While also showing a good level of gentleness and innocence allowing the audience to love him and have a bond with him.
I've flown the flag for Scott Adkins and Michael Jai White a lot, but in terms of new action stars, my radar hasn't really picked up on any really interesting people. I think Jeeja Yanin stood a good chance, but has sort of fallen away a bit into henchmen roles sadly.

I totally disagree that Arnold is not a great actor. He's probably the most underrated actor of all time. He can do comedy brilliantly and serious roles like Predator far better than anyone today. It's also interesting to note that he was a millionaire before he ever got into acting.

Excellent video. Often I watch videos like this and they go on and on, and have no structure and a weak point to it all. But this video is just great, it's clear the message you want the viewer to come away with and you illustrate the point so well. Well done. Arnie's story is really inspiring and the simple idea you set out of 1. being self aware and 2. pushing yourself to keep evolving and trying new things sums up his attitude well, and as you said is an attitude that can only bring you greatness.
I think Arnold's greatest strength is his 'poor' roots. From what i've seen, he has at no point in his life ever thought himself better than the average man. Always down to earth. So while Stallone and willis are flaunting their fame and physique Arnold isn't. It really does allow you to view him as just another guy, down to earth.
another fantastic video. Sabotage was so underrated in my opinion and it was great seeing Arnie in that type of role. Comforting was a great way to describe him, he's exactly that. when it comes to Arnie, he is in so many films that you see are on the TV guide when skipping through and switch over to straight away. I've had the honor to meet Arnold in person twice; before and after governorship. The premiere of True Lies as a kid, and later as an adult for the premiere of Expendables 2. His success can be attributed to the fact that he knows how to entertain his audience, whether in person or onscreen.

Trust me, without heavy steroid use, they would not look the way they do. Its just they downplay their steroid use to society. If a new conan was to be made, I'd actually like to see Arnie as the wise old king, Conan at the age of 70, looking for a successor to carry his crown before eternity claims him. That's something he hasn't done before and could be incredibly interesting.
I agree that Stallone and Willis are better natural actors, but I’ve found that a lot of actors can make up for a lack of natural ability with their work ethic (see: Will Smith). Schwarzeneggar is highly underrated imo. Look at his performance in The Terminator. It’s incredibly difficult to pull off that lack of emotion without seeming silly.
Do an episode on The Rock and why he is loved in everything! He almost feels like the next bigger than life action star. Movies like The Rundown, Fast and Furios franchise, and Faster are fun and action packed movies.
Yeah, I find the Rock fascinating in this same way. 15 years ago (like, circa Mummy II) the idea of him seriously becoming an actor was more like a joke. "Haha, another wrestler who'll star in a couple films and then slink back to the ring." Instead, he's almost certainly a bigger star NOW than he was even at his peak in 90s WWE. And also, as you say, almost universally loved. Who *doesn't* at least like The Rock? It's pretty amazing.

Dwayne Johnson is the closest thing we have to an 80s action star right now. Arnold basically passed the torch to him in the Rundown. My only problem is that he needs to associate himself with better directors like Arnold did. Shane Black is a step in the right direction.
The other day a kid I work with asked if there will be a celebrity death that will really effect me. I promptly said Arnold. Arnold passing will hurt pretty bad. I have seen his movies so many times. He raised me.
I thought he was excellent in Maggie. I liked the film but his portrayal of an old world weary man, just trying to do his best for his daughter is fantastic.
Arnie was like a role model I never had. The way he does things is similar to how I approach life. I don't do anything unless if I know I will have some idea it will do well. I always strive to improve myself as well and I try to be experimental myself. My appreciation for him as increased even more.

I feel like what makes Arnold stand out is simply that, he stands out, in so many ways. A lot of action actors sort of blend into each other and are in many cases interchangeable, but Arnold is different. His physique and face makes him a great image of the powerful looking action hero, and his accent and way of delivering lines makes him both hilarious and memorable. Even the fact that he's not a great actor works to his advantage, since you sort of expect his acting to also be unique in the same way so many other things about him are unique. Nowadays he's lost a lot of what made him stand out, and instead he relies heavily on nostalgia, but that's okay too. Seeing him on screen in his old days awakes emotions that only old memorable action actors can. When we see an old, tired Arnold on screen, we also unconsciously recall him in his previous movies. We know that he was strong and imposing when he was younger, we know it because we've seen young Arnold, we know his feats and struggles very intimately, and that drives home his character in a way that a brand new actor never can.
I recently visited his Wikipedia page to look up the title of Aftermath, and the table of contents alone left me with the same feeling. If you've got four different career sections and success in all of them, that's pretty awesome.
I think Arnie would do fine in more dramatic or comedic projects, since he's physically beyond his age for any hardcore action stuff. And I'm also ok with that since he was fantastic (imo) in Maggie. The fact that he and his fellow 80s actions stars like Willis, Sly, Van Damme and Lundgren (minus Seagall of course) are all doing genres they've rarely played in and in a way kind of work for them, warms my heart that these 'old geezers' can still entertain the lot of us in such a new and different way. Arnold is one of my heroes for many of the reasons you've stated in this video. Bravo! Also, it's not really good film commentary, but I'd love to hear a top action list from you, or top films in certain action subgenres like kung fu, scifi action, horror action, etc.
Arnold is such an awesome guy. The work ethic is almost unparalleled. And he just has that magnetic vibe. If you go back and watch Pumping Iron, you can tell he's going to be a star, and you can tell in moments of self-reflection that he's driven to push himself to new boundaries while knowing what his lane is and not straying too far outside of it.
Working with good directors has definitely been a key part of his success- and that's a lesson to learn in life too...that you can't do everything on your own and the team that you work with and that supports you is as important to your success as your individual effort. Might seem straight-forward to some people, but people like me have learned this the hard way to have realized the importance of swallowing one's ego and letting others help you.

The main things that differentiated Schwarzenegger as an actor were mainly: 1. his physique 2. his charisma 3. he was in really good movies with good directors 4. unlike other action movie stars of his era most of his movies were different from each other.

Arnold is basically a modern day John Wayne: A larger than life guy who basically played himself/the same type of role in all of his work in his youth/majority of his career, but showed a surprising amount of range in his roles towards the end of his career.
Arnie will be forever my all time favorite action hero, there was not a film he did that I ever miss and the fact he still try and do films that are a challenge for him made it more awesome and inspiring, defined agree on that statement, he is truly a gift to cinema history.
When I first heard of Maggie, I was skeptical. The action-hero tank doing a serious movie. But after watching it, I was legit impressed with his acting. I never thought I would get feels and then boom! An amazing actor

I've flown the flag for Scott Adkins and Michael Jai White a lot, but in terms of new action stars, my radar hasn't really picked up on any really interesting people. I think Jeeja Yanin stood a good chance, but has sort of fallen away a bit into henchmen roles sadly.

I totally disagree that Arnold is not a great actor. He's probably the most underrated actor of all time. He can do comedy brilliantly and serious roles like Predator far better than anyone today.
It's also interesting to note that he was a millionaire before he ever got into acting.

Excellent video. Often I watch videos like this and they go on and on, and have no structure and a weak point to it all. But this video is just great, it's clear the message you want the viewer to come away with and you illustrate the point so well. Well done.
Arnie's story is really inspiring and the simple idea you set out of 1. being self aware and 2. pushing yourself to keep evolving and trying new things sums up his attitude well, and as you said is an attitude that can only bring you greatness.
I think Arnold's greatest strength is his 'poor' roots. From what i've seen, he has at no point in his life ever thought himself better than the average man. Always down to earth.
So while Stallone and willis are flaunting their fame and physique Arnold isn't. It really does allow you to view him as just another guy, down to earth.

I actually thought Maggie was pretty good. It may have just been that I had no expectations for it, but it really impressed me.
another fantastic video. Sabotage was so underrated in my opinion and it was great seeing Arnie in that type of role. Comforting was a great way to describe him, he's exactly that. when it comes to Arnie, he is in so many films that you see are on the TV guide when skipping through and switch over to straight away. The point about his directors is bang on. He's a clever man and willing to trust others due to his limitations.
Completely agree with your statements. Alongside his willingness to do new things and advance his career, I do think his accent and written for one-line aid in appeal. No other actor has enough quotes to entertain a whole room of any age members.

I've had the honor to meet Arnold in person twice; before and after governorship. The premiere of True Lies as a kid, and later as an adult for the premiere of Expendables 2. His success can be attributed to the fact that he knows how to entertain his audience, whether in person or onscreen.

@@psychicpebbles98 Don't believe that lol. All bodybuilders down play their steroid use. They work really really hard but steroids play a HUGE part of how they achieve their bodies. Trust me, without heavy steroid use, they would not look the way they do. Its just they downplay their steroid use to society. Furthermore, plenty of people around that time admit arnold and other bodybuilders were taking dianabol, deca, etc. and other steroids like candy.

If a new conan was to be made, I'd actually like to see Arnie as the wise old king, Conan at the age of 70, looking for a successor to carry his crown before eternity claims him. That's something he hasn't done before and could be incredibly interesting.

I agree that Stallone and Willis are better natural actors, but I’ve found that a lot of actors can make up for a lack of natural ability with their work ethic (see: Will Smith). Schwarzeneggar is highly underrated imo. Look at his performance in The Terminator. It’s incredibly difficult to pull off that lack of emotion without seeming silly.

Do an episode on The Rock and why he is loved in everything! He almost feels like the next bigger than life action star. Movies like The Rundown, Fast and Furios franchise, and Faster are fun and action packed movies.
Yeah, I find the Rock fascinating in this same way. 15 years ago (like, circa Mummy II) the idea of him seriously becoming an actor was more like a joke. "Haha, another wrestler who'll star in a couple films and then slink back to the ring." Instead, he's almost certainly a bigger star NOW than he was even at his peak in 90s WWE. And also, as you say, almost universally loved. Who *doesn't* at least like The Rock? It's pretty amazing.

What is also amazing about The Rock, is that he's been an action start in both serious blockbusters, but at the same time, he's been in a lot of fun silly kids movies where he doesn't take himself too seriously. A very great range
Why the Rock is so successful? That is easy, he's got height, muscles, a decent bone structure, a handsome face and natural charisma. No need to make a 10 minute video to illustrate such a simple concept.
Dwayne Johnson is the closest thing we have to an 80s action star right now. Arnold basically passed the torch to him in the Rundown. My only problem is that he needs to associate himself with better directors like Arnold did. Shane Black is a step in the right direction.

I thought he was excellent in Maggie. I liked the film but his portrayal of an old world weary man, just trying to do his best for his daughter is fantastic.
Arnie was like a role model I never had. The way he does things is similar to how I approach life. I don't do anything unless if I know I will have some idea it will do well. I always strive to improve myself as well and I try to be experimental myself. My appreciation for him as increased even more.

"Stallone never felt comfortable in the few comic roles he's gone for" Being uncomfortable was the whole point of his character in the Demolition Man, so he pulled that one off.
I feel like what makes Arnold stand out is simply that, he stands out, in so many ways. A lot of action actors sort of blend into each other and are in many cases interchangeable, but Arnold is different. His physique and face makes him a great image of the powerful looking action hero, and his accent and way of delivering lines makes him both hilarious and memorable. Even the fact that he's not a great actor works to his advantage, since you sort of expect his acting to also be unique in the same way so many other things about him are unique.
Nowadays he's lost a lot of what made him stand out, and instead he relies heavily on nostalgia, but that's okay too. Seeing him on screen in his old days awakes emotions that only old memorable action actors can. When we see an old, tired Arnold on screen, we also unconsciously recall him in his previous movies. We know that he was strong and imposing when he was younger, we know it because we've seen young Arnold, we know his feats and struggles very intimately, and that drives home his character in a way that a brand new actor never can.

I recently visited his Wikipedia page to look up the title of Aftermath, and the table of contents alone left me with the same feeling. If you've got four different career sections and success in all of them, that's pretty awesome.
I think Arnie would do fine in more dramatic or comedic projects, since he's physically beyond his age for any hardcore action stuff. And I'm also ok with that since he was fantastic (imo) in Maggie. The fact that he and his fellow 80s actions stars like Willis, Sly, Van Damme and Lundgren (minus Seagall of course) are all doing genres they've rarely played in and in a way kind of work for them, warms my heart that these 'old geezers' can still entertain the lot of us in such a new and different way. Arnold is such an awesome guy. The work ethic is almost unparalleled. And he just has that magnetic vibe. If you go back and watch Pumping Iron, you can tell he's going to be a star, and you can tell in moments of self-reflection that he's driven to push himself to new boundaries while knowing what his lane is and not straying too far outside of it.
Working with good directors has definitely been a key part of his success- and that's a lesson to learn in life too...that you can't do everything on your own and the team that you work with and that supports you is as important to your success as your individual effort. Might seem straight-forward to some people, but people like me have learned this the hard way to have realized the importance of swallowing one's ego and letting others help you.
I like that you have respect for the action genre. All I can remeber from the 80s are the great action movies like robocop and running man. They told important stories
Crazy thing; I was watching Batman and Robin earlier. And i must say, as bad as that entire movie was, Arnie( unlike Clooney) felt like he knew exactly the type of movie he was in. I actually enjoy his campy approach when I watch the movie with that understanding

This was a great video, I love Arnold. I just like to add that a lot of us in the states don't see him as a foreign actor. Sure he was born in another country, but he embodies the idea of America like no other. To come here with nothing and end up as a larger than life success through hard work and passion, is truly the story of the American Dream.
What i like about arnold is his determination and he realized he's a walking talking meme so he tries working around it. People wondered why his accent doesn't go away even after living in america for so long. He knows that is his trademark. The man is a genius and strong willed.
