  • Hello,
    In this video I will be showing you my tortoise enclosure for my four hermanns tortoises. I hope you enjoy this video and find it relaxing and interesting.
    Just a quick mention:
    I have done lots of research into keeping these guys and have a few books on the topic. I am very vigilant of any aggression between them and am prepared for this possibility. Dandelions are a treat for these guys not their main diet. Also I'm aware that this enclosure is not perfect, like I mention in the video my plans were to extend it, add a hutch, plants some safe shrubs and add mesh across the top. Due to this pandemic I'm having to make best with what I have as I'm unable to source the materials.
    If you have any recommendations please let me know as I am always looking to enrich these guys lives as much as possible.

    I'm lucky enough to have a secure garden so mine has the full run of the whole place. I have a heated enclosure as well with full spectrum lighting but it is nice to see them outside in natural sunlight. Hopefully a few more weeks and I can get her out of the fridge again!!! 😆

      Wow lucky tortoise! It would be great to let mine have the full run of the garden but they are very crafty and would be out in no time 😂. I've upgraded their enclosure so will be uploading another video at the beginning of summer!👀
      Hope your tortoise has an easy transition from brumation! 😁
      Thanks for watching 👍

      Thanks for the kind words! Yes there isn't much content for uk outdoor enclosures. The main thing is the temperature, as I mention in the video they only go outside if the weather is hot and sunny. I've made some upgrades to this enclosure and will hopefully do an update video this summer!

      My Hermanns tortoise is 80, passed down through some owners a few times. He's lived in the British garden all his life, his enclosure _is_ the garden. I only bring him in when it drops below 5°. He hibernates via the box method so he's never outside for winter, but he has dug down early in the soil a few times and was not seen again until Spring! They will dig a good foot deep or more. He hates cats and chases them from the garden; they cannot hurt him and the neighbourhood cats get bored after some time anyway. Foxes & rats at night are the only predators, so make sure your garden is secure. He goes of his own accord into a 'predator proof' hutch each evening, which has a narrow entrance into a larger wooden box with a mulch-soil base. He hates being brought indoors and will constantly try to escape when I do (for cold nights).
      As long as your tortoises are raised in the British weather and you monitor the temperature each night, they can live largely unsupervised outdoors, mine is now elderly and still going strong. They're very tough, hardy animals as long as their natural environment is replicated as much as possible.
      If you do have an outdoor enclosure, make sure you do what Alaisdair does and ensure they have permanent shady spots, else they will overheat and suffer.

    Have a nosey at a cold frame. Obviously made to the size you need. Basically it’s a mini greenhouse and keeps the temps up inside the frame. Without needing heaters. Even on an overcast day it’s more often than not 10 degrees Celsius higher in the frame. I’ve got mine in greenhouse at the minute. Weathers not stable enough!!

    Hiya, looking for a bit of advice actually,
    We’re looking at getting a H tortoise, with an insulated den outside- with a heat mat.... some have said that they can stay out all year round, some have said they need to ‘hybernate’ so I’d like some advice 🙂 thanks

      no heatmat, just heat uva and strip light for uvb, usually hibernate tortoise after a year of owning it so you know its healthy, there are lots of help sheets online to give you more information, i have a horsefield thats 3 yrs old so i havent hibernated him as yet..ps he could also be a she as they dont sexually mature until they are at least 5 yrs old

    Do they stay outside like that in the winter? Im looking to get a tortoise but as i live in the uk i want to make sure that its okay to keep them outside.

    • @alasdairaquatics
      @alasdairaquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there! No in spring, autumn and winter they have an indoor enclosure which is heated and has uvb lighting. Its important to not let them get too cold as they are from warm climates. They are only outside if the weather is above 20 degrees celcius.
      Some people keep them outside all year round but sadly in the UK this isnt the best thing for them as temperatures can drop below freezing which is far colder than their natural habitats in Italy, Sicily, South France and Spain. I hope this helps. Good luck 😁👍

    Do turtles need in a outdoor enclosure/pond need a basking light or is the U.K. sun enough for them

    • @alasdairaquatics
      @alasdairaquatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! My enclosure is for hermanns tortoises, these guys are happy outside in the UK when it's hot and sunny but other than that they have an indoor enclosure with heat and UVB lighting as most the time the weather isn't hot enough for them here in the UK unfortunately.
      As for aquatic turtles I'm unsure to be honest, I've kept them in the past but that was an indoor setup with heat and UVB lighting as is does get cold here.
      Thanks for watching!

      @alasdairaquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, in the UK they are best kept indoors most of the time, being let out in summer when it's hot and sunny. You're correct in thinking it's too cold most of the time outdoors. These guys spend most the time in their heated indoor enclosure👍
      Although that being said lots of people keep their tortoises outside all year round. I wouldn't recommend this as when its cold they can't digest their food properly and can get respiratory infections. I hope that helps! There's lot of great websites and forums to visit if you're interested in keeping Hermann tortoises yourself
      Thanks for watching! 😁

    You not worried about animals getting at em like foxes n cats n stuff? Love tortoises.

    • @alasdairaquatics
      @alasdairaquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tortoises are pretty well protected by their shell, my biggest concern was them being carried away by a fox or cat. When they were small like in this video I would always sit with them and keep an eye on them. Now they are older I have put some chicken wire over the top of the enclosure and added a guinea pig hutch onto the end of the enclosure to lock them away at night if I want. Maybe I should do an update video on their enclosure now they are almost fully grown 🤔.
      Friends I know have lots of adult tortoises which are left to roam a whole garden for years with no issue, I think the main thing is that they are very heavy and well protected so a fox or cat could not hurt them and probably is not strong enough to move them. They weigh a lot more than you think, similar to a house brick or two for my smaller Hermann's!
      Thanks for watching 👍
