Majority vets dont know crap about tortoises. I'm glad someone with knowledge informs those who want to learn. This man is amazing. I lost a tortoise a few years back. She got sick. I live in dallas/fort worth area....and very very few knew reptiles. Not to mention...it was a week before I could get my tort in with the one vet I found. So yeah...back off the K man!

Great advice *****. Taking care of animals is important, and spotting sickness early is vital. It's good to know you are treating these tortuosus as instructed by medical professionals; and to bring them to a vet when spotting any major health issues.

Sadly, it's hard to find a vet that specializes in exotics or reptiles. I live in Utah and I only know of two vets ( not counting the vet at the zoo ) that know how how to treat a reptile in my state.

My mother's 3 toed box turtle was run over by a truck and had a huge Crack in her shell. We bought her from a reptile store and by that time it was healed pretty well. I just saw her after 12 years and the cracked part was almost unnoticeable. It's true, turtles are extremely durable creatures and can withstand many things.

here r some tips for not eating tortoises/turtles:
u should soak it in water for 15-20 minutes then put it in sunshine in the morning for about 40-60 minutes THEN give them lettuce ( their fav food or ur tortoises fav food ) and also give them about half way the water bowl :) I hope this helps!!

Is there an importance for administering the medication in the bicep area? I prefer to do it in the forearm because it's just easier and quicker and visually efficient for me. Vet told me it's ok to do it in any part of the arm but he also preferred the bicep area.

Hi, I’m hoping you can help with this question I have. Right now I have no place to take my red footed tortoise as we are on lockdown due to the virus. So I’m having a hard time finding a vet. I received this tortoise from a neighbor, he’s 16 yrsold he was eating red leafed lettuce with zucchini and squash and red bell peppers. As of today we’ve had him 7 days, 5 days ago I introduced green grapes about 5 into his base meal he gets and on the 7 days of having him his vomiting and he urinated a mucus like substance. I was told by a reptile store that grapes are acidic and he should only get them so often. They suggested not feeding him for 3-5 days so he can get it out of his system. He also been basking more today since throwing up today. He’s vomited at least 3x this evening but after that nothing just basking in the light when normally he’s in his shelter sleeping. I hope you can help me

Hello! I think that you should give your tortoise of a bit of a long soak. If that doesn't help, try giving some more calcium powder on his food (if you have any) so that it can substitute for all that food and protein that he's thrown up. Try calling the emergency vet office if you can get in contact with any of them. About the mucus substance, did he do that while soaking? If he did, that means that he is hydrated. If not, then that is probably not a good sign. I think that you should just let him rest, and be sure to keep an eye on him. Also, confirm that he is eating. The soak that I talked about is very important. Soak him/her for 5-10 minutes longer than you usually do, and do it 2-3 days a week. It might help him. If you don't have calcium powder to sprinkle on top of his food, just give a plain diet of. dandelion leaves, collard/mustard greens, and hibiscus flower petals. If you want, do not feed him as much as you usually do. I hope your tortoise feels much better! Bye!

Hi Kenan, Please help. I have a russian male tortoise that i bought from Petsmart. I have spent a lot of time researching and loving tortoises. I live in Ohio so i chose a small tortoise. He is in a 50 gallon tote while his tortoise table is being built. But he won't eat. I have tried tortoise grassland food, spring mix greens, carrots, butternut squash, tomatoes. He just digs himself into his substrate. He has basking light and UVB light and water dish for him to soak in, I have given him 3 baths (just soaked him), Can you give me any advise.

    • @darijanr5704
      @darijanr5704 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

without a detailed description of your situation I can't help you but a few general points are:
      1. Temperature: An inactive Agrionemys horsfieldii like that is most likely kept too cold. A quick search for Ohio's climate confirms my initial worry but you need to do your own research and make sure that you are keeping the animal at a temperature regiment throughout the year that is the same as the one in it's natural habitat. The key to good reptile husbandry is simulating it's natural habitat as closely as possible.
      2. Commercial UVB fluorescent lamps are GARBAGE and a WASTE OF MONEY. They have little UVB output to begin with and loose the little they have quickly. The only viable UVB source, used by real professionals, is the Osram Ultra-Vitalux: www.osram.com/osram_com/products/lamps/specialty-lamps/ultraviolet-lamps/ultra-vitalux/index.jsp
      3. Light. Basking reptiles get a form of "depression" if kept indoors under bad general lighting. The sun outside has 100 000lx (unit for measuring luminous fux per unit area = "brightness") and more while most pet store bought light solutions can't even provide 500lx at a basking spot. Other than the natural sun, metal halide lamps are the only way to go when providing general lighting for basking reptiles. A 70W metal halide lamp can provide a basking spot bright and warm enough for a small fist sized animal.
      4. Basking spot. The animal will regulate it's temperature by basking under the sun or indoors under a lamp. Ideally that would be a metal halide lamp which would also provide the right illuminance at the same time but even a simple spot lamp will do for basic thermoregulation if that is all you have atm. The temperature at the basking spot should be around 50°C, it gets very warm/hot in direct sunlight!
      5. Provide a shallow terracotta dish with clean, fresh, warm water daily. Keep a small section (maybe 1/4th) of the substrate, ideally sandy earth, wet to the touch and the rest less moist but not bone dry. Spray everything lightly in the mornings with a spray bottle.
      6. Food. Feed only grass and weeds. Tomatoes give them kidney stones, carrots and anything with sugar messes with their internal gut microflora symbiotes who are what is actually feeding the animal. Vitamin A is plentiful in stuff like dandelion and thistle, no need for carrots. Wild, leafy greens and flowers from a patch of clean grassland is where you get your tortoise food, not the supermarket.
      7. Calcium. A Cuttlefish bone for birds is the best calcium source.

I had a baby box turtle. I know they aren't the same, but the vet gave her a shot under her arm (pulling her arm out). Was this a good spot for a shot? I thought the lungs and organs were in that area. She didn't live 5 minutes after this. I just assumed this vet knew what he was doing. Come to find out he has only worked on one other turtle before mine. I just want to know if the antibiotic shot should have been where you put it in the video. Thanks!

Hi Kenan, I have four baby star tortoises that arrived in a shipment from a captive breeding facility in Malaysia. When they got here, two babies showed signs of respiratory infection. I am now confused if baytrils are safe for them (oral medication), and what should i try to do if its not safe for them? P.S. my country does not provide anything exept for baytrils to cure RI.

What if my parents say that veterinary care for a tortoise is useless and it will cost the same price of the tortoise.

Dhruv S. then you probably shouldn't have animals if you cannot afford to care for them properly. I'm sorry to be blunt but it's something that all pet owners should do, is have additional money in case of an emergency or just for additional medical expenses. Should get in the habit of bringing all pets to the vet to get check ups annually. By not properly caring for a pet once you notice something is wrong you can potentially be letting the situation worsen causing that animal to suffer. Letting animals you know are sick suffer and not getting them proper medical treatment can be considered neglect in some places and animal abuse is starting to be more enforced and a person could potentially be charged for that now.

Then don't have pets period, any pet, at all. It's our responsibility as owners to take care of our animals regardless of the cost, if your parents are that ignorant and irresponsible then it's best for you to wait until you grow up and can pay for your own pets care. When one of my rats got a tumor, me and my mom had to drive 2 hours away to an exotic vet to get it operated on, counting the operation and meds it all cost about $500. $500 for a $6 pet. But that's an owners responsibility, animals aren't things, and if your parents don't understand that then don't have pets.

It is common for a young tortoise. And it is noting to get scared of , feed it vitamin d3 and keep it warm and gradually its shell will become harder.......it is same as new born baby's head as time passes by it hardend.....so dont worry and look after it
