I had wire fencing on one side of my tortoise enclosure, and they were always pushing at it. I had no idea it was stressing them out so badly! I actually paused this video in the middle, rant out to the yard, and got some boards. Within a minute of my replacing the fence with boards, they all calmed down and went back to roaming the rest of their space. Thanks to you, my guys are now much happier!

I LOVE that this video exists. About 8 years ago, I worked at a new pet shop where one of the owners swore that sulcata tortoises didn't need water. Of course, I thought this was insane.
I did tons and tons of research on them during my time off and set up a near perfect habitat for them (I didn't have the damp moss, in a hide for them, because I never came across that, but it sounded like that's a newer realization.) I also did soaks for them in the morning and after we closed. Which I know now is more often than needed.
The owner who said that they don't need water wasn't actually supposed to be in the store. It was supposed to be the other owner and me, but he would come in, change the habitat behind my back so that they didn't have ANY water and the wrong substrate and tell customers that they didn't need water, even though I showed him my research. The other owner talked to him about it too.
It drove me mad, those poor little babies!

I use a kiddy pool for my 2 tortoises and they adore it. Since I live in Nevada mine are desert dwellers and maybe three times a week I let them out of the pool so they can roam around my yard for a bit. They're around 5 years old now and I adore them

This was very helpful and i think it would have gone well with my new sulcata, but i wanted to really warn anyone who reads this that plans to get a baby sulcata; so i had the correct and needed lights until my night light for the sulcata broke, so i went to the store and they recommended the red night light, so i bought it.
We had the turtle for ten days by then, and we got the red light on the 7th day. The baby sulcata was very active, well fed (clovers, romaine lettuce, carrots now and then, aloe vera, a tiny bit of strawberry once, etc.) i also soaked it, i took it out everyday for the natural sunlight, but i realized it hadnt pooped, so i checked and i noticed it was blocked. I looked up ways to fix it, and i decided to use tweezers, very thin ones, to clear the blockage and bark from the organic potting soil was pulled out, and my God it must have been so painful.
I thought it would have been fine, i had searched it up and apparently it was common, and about a day or two later i tried feeding it, taking it outside, and it stopped eating and was very inactive, and it was said the turtle not eating was common for shy turtles at a new enclosure, which seemed odd because its past actions proved otherwise.
I took as much of the bark out of the potting soil that day and stopped using the red light immediately, i believed the baby sulcata would be able to fight through it because apparently it was common for them to digest its flooring, but of course i was still worried so before i went to sleep i made sure to spoil it, putting the food and water closer, and when i checked on the baby, which was around 3-5 months old, its mouth would open like it was screaming or crying for help, i didnt know if it did that at night because i usually dont check it at nighttime but i... cant say i wasnt scared for the baby but i chose not to pay too much attention to it.
The next morning.... the poor thing wouldnt wake up. It passed away, and i pray that the baby didnt go through that much pain, but i believe it must have because its little body couldnt handle it in its stomach.
I cant say i blame myself, besides the fact i should have done more research because of my ignorance, i know it may seem odd to some people but i pray the baby Sulcata will forgive me for it. I definitely do not blame Kenan, but i would say im more towards the salesperson who sold the red light, though i dont entirely blame him either due to the fact i dont think they would have sold it if they knew it would cause distortion to its sight and make it eat whatever was red, how it was unnatural like any colored lighting during the night, that it wasnt recommended, as i found on mutiple resources.
Just wanted to let anyone know who gets a rednight light to either not get it, but if you already have it, of course you can change it if you can or so wish, but if you cant please make it a safer flooring for the baby sulcata so it doesnt go through as much pain as mine did.
Sorry for it being so long, but please, out of everything from this comment, at least do some research before buying anything you have little knowledge of before you buy or use it on your animal; this is my request, yes, but any beautiful and innocent living creature under any owners protection doesnt deserve to be put through that much pain as mine did, so please do it for them.
Thank you if you read all of this 😊

I live in Puerto Rico and I recent buy a red foot tortoise, about 4 months old from a breeder. This is perfect for red foots since we have a tropical weather and by this seasons there’s a lot of humidity. Definitely I will have my red foot outdoors when it grows up. Also this video helped me a lot since I’m a rookie with tortoises, never had one before but I did my research and this really helped me a lot. I happen to have a vivarium full of plants, so I’m planning to buy some hibiscus bushes to grow my own tortoise food. I was one of those that where worried cause of my tortoise don’t move too much, she likes to be hiding all day, that got me worried a lot but now I’m relief, hope my red foot one day will look as gorgeous as yours

  • @PotatoNinjaMaster

Amazing video with so much information.
I've just got a sulcata tortoise today and I want to give it the best I can.
I was wondering if I could just use coconut fiber substrate instead of cypress mulch and forest moss to humidify it for my non-enclosed tank? I live near the equator and the temperature is about 30-35degrees everyday and it's very humid.
Secondly, what's the temperature should the basking light be? I have heard that it should be in the range of 70-80 but some at 105-110.
Lastly, right now it's still about 4 months old, I have gotten him some pellet food with calcium(one pellet per day) but should I start giving him other forms of food?
I hope you can help me as it's a life and I want to give it the best I could!

This was super helpful!! I'm a snake girl myself have raised and rescued them over the years. We got out of that for many reason but i got a couple baby tortoises.
I did go build my own tortoise house. Was way cheaper then buying and having to pay shipping. I got both tortoises at same time from same "breeder". After first month I noticed a big difference in their growth. I assumed maybe i ended up with one male and one female. One has not grown at all or much other has tripled in size.
I'm worried there maybe a problem with it.

I’m getting a baby tortoise tomorrow (Russian) and I went to tractor supply got a big wash bucket (4.5 ft) and a hole bunch of soil then for a basking spot a terra cotta dish flipped upside down to hold in warmth then there is organic soil a little bit of mulch on top and then a small dish for water and I’m growing a hibiscus and aloe vera plant in pots that gets taken out for three days a week and put in for four days a week also about 10 inches of soil so they can burrow and finally rocks to go around the bowl of water so they can easily get in and out! One more thing I am getting a palm frond for a hiding spot and some moss!! What else can I add and is it too much dirt??????

Hi Kenan! I just got myself a baby sulcata and he’s been with me for a little over three weeks. I’m wondering about the following things:
    1) how many times should I feed it and how much is enough? I’m currently feeding it endive, chicory and romaine.
    2) his enclosure is pretty large (60x80x40) and I’ve placed a wooden hut under his basking lamp and a flat stone under the UVB light. I’m thinking about getting another hut for Jim to escape to and place therein some spagnum moss, since you mentioned that humidity will be good for their growth. What do you think of my current set up and thoughts on getting a second hut?
    3) my little baby is a bit of a coward as he sometimes pees when being handled. I’m worried that he’s losing too much water by peeing. Sometimes I see cottage cheese lumpy looking rusted in his clear pee and poop. What do you think about this?
Let me know your answers. And thanks!

Hi. I'm in the UK. There's always rows in fb whether to iuse tables or vivs. Vivs seem a good idea for keeping the heat mor balanced. Anyways I used an indoor rabbit hutch. The plastic type. With a clear plastic top part and a wire top. So heat stays in better than if it was an open table. Torts can't see out. Can also be put out in these on a sunny day x

I’m getting mixed research on whether they like a moist or dry terrain so would love to know what you actually think. Thanks

Mercury vapor bulb is great, I still add extra uvb - some are expensive but if you look hard enough, you'll get one for $12 each 100 watters.

You have definitely helped me Kenan. I think I'm going to get a marginated tortoise next spring after they brumate. Do you have any care advice or essential equipment list for Margies?

Hi, I’ve had my 2 baby red foots for almost a month now. And I just bought some baby chickens and turkeys and I’m planning on building a big outside area for all my animals, the chickens and turkeys will be mostly free range during the day but kept in the run at night. How do you feel about me keeping all of them together it will be over 28’ long and 14’ wide with there own garden.

I know that this is an older video but I was wondering how long you would keep a baby hermans tortoise in that plastic cement mixing box? is that just for showing us easier or can you keep them in that for a year until they get bigger? hopefully you respond thanks!

thank you for such great videos!
I just receive a baby leopard tortoise and he is the greatest!
recently I noticed his under belly shell is a little pliable.
my set up is practically identical to yours except I have a little bone in the arena and use coconut coir/alfalfa pellets.
I spray calcium on his food three times a week.
should I be worried? any help is greatly appreciated!

I am really confused on lighting for tortoises. For the basking bulbs, do you leave them on at night? Also, are there any lights that you need to buy for the nighttime? And, one last question, what are the pricings for your tortoises?

most of the time in Thailand i have 37 degrees celsius/100 fh. my 2 sulcatas are about 5 months old. at night they sleep in their terrace enclosure - without radiation. in the morning they come to a larger enclosure on the terrace and in the afternoon they are in the garden. now in the rainy season the sulcatas get a few hours of UVB/UVA light.

+Kamp Kenan would you say it's save to keep a Hermann's tortoise outside in Berkeley, CA? Just substring about whether an outdoor setup would be recommended, we're the same latitude as Athens but it can get cold at night and in the winter. Thanks for your help, great video!

    • @mjgaudier8999

+Gator Sprinkler mixture of top soil and coco coir is much better.. sand, I don't think so, it can be easily ingested.
