    After this episode, it’s crazy how normal Natalie actually is in the present day scenes lol. For whatever reason she seemed to catch the full brunt of her mother’s wrath. Middle child, only daughter. At least Mikey was the oldest (first kid) and Carm was the “impressive” one. She got caught in between. In one episode she inadvertently caused her mother to first outwardly fantasize about suicide (which we learn probably wasn’t a shallow threat) and then also drive a car thru their house as a response to her just trying to help.

    • @TheEclecticSinger

      This comment found its target. I am the middle child. An artist. A cancerian (although I am not a follower of astrology, I cannot deny the core traits of my character being caricaturishly in alignment with those of my birth sign). Narcissist father, more extreme narcissist older sister, mild Aspergers younger brother (none of this realized until well in to adulthood) and MOTHER, who despite six years of psychoanalysis before marrying, never got to the core of feeling used and manipulated by her parents, segued into almost 60 years of being gaslit and manipulated by her (thankfully, not physically violent) husband, became a Jekyll and Hyde, emotionally destabilized daily by her husband’s (my father’s) narcissist crazy making, her volatility and rage, the flipside of profound love, adoration, delight in us-her three children, appreciation, and support of who we were, of who we wanted to become, yet the fury always beneath the surface, hair triggered, the distant earthquake rumble giving way to convulsive eruptions, torrents of hate filled, screamed language, which shook the earth beneath our feet, eradicating all sense of love, of being protected, cherished, cared for and most devastatingly, of feeling a worthy recipient, leaving in its place the conviction of being invalid, of being the cause of our beloved mother’s pain. As did the siblings in the scene, we all understood the wrath which would befall us all for the perceived transgression of one, allies transformed to enemies.

      With narcissistic or borderline parents, family dynamics fall into these patterns. Mike is the golden child, Carmy the 2nd favourite, but forgotten and mostly left to his own devices. And poor Natalie is the scapegoat and the parentified child. Anything she says gets turned around into something negative. You can see evidently in the show how this has shaped each of the their personalities. Carmy needs the stress of the kitchen and has been running all around the world to escape his family. Nat is more like the mother to the bear gang, forced to take care of everything. It's made worse because she's her mother's only daughter, so Donna heaps and projects even more onto her.

    • @samfilmkid
      @samfilmkid 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      Nat could have so EASILY been a one dimensional character, the stick in the mud sister who’s always ruining everyone’s fun. When I first saw her in the pilot, I thought “Oh here we go, big sister’s here to ruin the fun” but the thing is…the show knows a lot of the chaos in the restaurant is not really that fun! It’s fun to watch but only up to a point. And Nat is usually right about stuff.

      @@TheEclecticSinger interesting because Pete is generally presented as a joke, clearly more of a pushover than Natalie. I agree with the other commenter here, I think Natalie was taking “revenge” on her mom. With the immediate eye-roll of everyone they knew that would set her off, so Natalie isn’t that stupid (she spent all episode quietly trying to dispose the liquor, etc.) to ask her that without knowing. Also the moms response “I hate when you ask me that” indicates that Natalie has done this before. She is essentially telling her mom to fuck off for her abuse here

    • @jloo6822
      @jloo6822 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +175

      @@rohunsaigal2576 I disagree, I view it as her being caring to a fault. Nothing in her character suggests that she’s a vindictive individual. Her trying to pour donna’s alcohol out subtly shows that she just really wants her to calm down. She’s either unable to accept or unable to process that her mom is truly beyond repair.
      Mikey and Carm realize this that’s why they kind of “play her game” until they just need to back off out of necessity. They’re jaded enough to pull the plug on trying to “fix” her because they know it’s in vain. For whatever reason, Natalie refuses to accept that she can’t help…setting her way over the edge.

    • @seemonjena659
      @seemonjena659 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +44

      @@rohunsaigal2576 Its instictive for a child to ask his/her parents whether they are okay! If Natalie was by any means taking revenge on her mother then she had many many cyances throughout the dinner to do that. Even Carmy asks his Mom in the kitchen whether she is alright even though Carmy knows that is what sets off the trigger. Can't imagine how any one would think that Natalie was trying to instigate hwr mother when its crystal clear that she is the most caring individual in the family.

    • @roguemcqueen78
      @roguemcqueen78 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +39

      Natalie asked the question out of genuine concern. Because it's been ingrained in her to be overly concerned about her mother's mood. Earlier, in the kitchen scene, you can see how each character is trying so hard to keep Donna on an even keel because they've all experienced these kind of blow ups. Notice that the collective negative reaction is actually to Natalie's question. They're frustrated and annoyed that Natalie just "set Donna off" because they all know what's coming next, because it's already a pattern of behavior. The expectation is that the everyone is supposed to tiptoe around whatever emotional buttons might send Donna over the edge. No one expects Donna to act better, they all accept that "Donna is the way she is" but that Natalie "should've known better". This is EXACTLY what it's like to be in a dysfunctional family with a volatile parent.

Most people have at least one person in family that causes problems and upsets everyone, or have one yet to be met, despite your status in society. You can meet one in every group. I thought her saying that was transparent manipulation tbh. She got no sympathy out of me.
      She decided to make these ridiculous overcomplicated dishes to make a point about how much effort she puts into everything and how little her family appreciates it.
      Her family clearly didn't even like these dishes. They also didn't want her making them since they knew how difficult the preparation was and that it would likely push her over the edge.
      This was not about her making beautiful things for others. She was simply setting her family up for her grand dramatic outburst.

    The Bear is like Avengers Endgame for all the great actors of this century. They got Bob Odenkirk, Jamie Lee Curtis, John Mulaney, Olivia Colman, Jon Bernthal, Joel Mchale, Will poulter, and hopefully many more in upcoming seasons.
    And they're not even just cameos, for cameos' sake, they work so well! This scene with Jamie Lee Curtis, the one with Olivia Colman (my favourite) and the one with Will Poulter, they don't stress on the fact that they're big stars doing a cameo in a show. They just casually show it to us and we enjoy the shit out of it!

But then the dark times came so often when she could savagely tear you apart for three days straight and on the final day have you on your knees begging her forgiveness for making her do that.
      In a way it made us so strong, but left us with so many scars.
