- Alton Towers officially opened for 2022 on 19th March 2022 and we went to the park for the first day! In this video we try to go on as many of the roller coasters as possible during a sell out day at Alton Towers, talk about Nemesis' re-tracking work and begin our SW9 speculation.

The reason Alton Towers are retracking Nemesis is that it was the ride that elevated the park as a 'destination park' for enthusiasts and general public alike. The other big coasters they had at the time (Corkscrew, Black Hole + Thunder Looper) were just 'off the shelf' rides on a flat piece of land whereas Nemesis was completely custom from all the landscaping, to the coaster design and even the theming/backstory. No other ride at the park prior to this had this amount of work put into it.
Without Nemesis, I don't think Alton Towers would be the park it is today.
Without Corkscrew there’d have been no Nemesis, Corkscrew firmly put Alton Towers on the map and with its instance success made the park a direct rival to BPB. Nemesis was very much a 50/50 if it’d stay or go.

Great vlog..enjoyed your chat about nemesis lads...lets hope it does last another 50 years..i was there the year they started doing the groundwork for it..even that was themed and exciting with a futuristic looking security guard pacing up and down where it was fenced off.never forgot it.was a game changer when it opened .... i was there that year too...happy days..cheers scott and your team
I first went on Nemesis in 2005, took me 4 visits between 2001-5 to finally want to do it. I didn’t visit Towers before 2001. Thank you for watching
I really like the fact you gave AT credit where due. Opening day will always be super busy, but you had realistic expectations and actually managed to get a fair bit done. It’s good they extended the opening hours. You got some great shots of Nemesis ; I’ll definitely miss that when it closes for the work but I’m so glad they are keeping it.

Great video as always guys, looked like you all had a very good opening day at the towers. Nice to see they have done a bit of tlc during winter and got the paint brushes and pressure washer out . Personally don’t think Nemesis was ever in danger of getting replaced but I do agree with Mark about them closing forbidden valley, I wondered the same when it was announced. Also think the multi coaster deal with B&M rumour could well be true ! Multi launch B&M as SW9 ??
Thanks John, they’ve definitely done some sprucing up but the coasters definitely need a jet wash soon. Nemesis was very much a possibility for removal.

My personal opinion is that Nemesis was the turning point for Alton Towers, its so unusual being cut into the terrain like it is its like no other. And what else could they put there with the terrain designed exclusively for that ride.
I'd have been extremely surprised if they had decided to remove it.
I'm extremely glad they are keeping it for the foreseeable.
For me its like The Big One was for pleasure beach 2 massively popular and respected coasters
I still think without Corkscrew, Towers would never have got going and would have stayed in BPB's shadow. Corkscrew and Nemesis definitely put them out there.

I heard from couple of the staff they going to start the re track maybe mid November when the park shut
During the closed season they'll need to remove it first
I think they'll keep Forbidden Valley open for capacity sake, and I think it would be nice for Galactica to have a good season before it probably ends up going. We queued far too long for a ride yesterday, and its running one side of the station now, two trains and even then, one of the trains was knackered when we got on, poor devil!
I’d definitely not been disappointed to see Galactica go for good.
@@yourexperienceguide I like the ride, I think it's a good stepping stone onto something with inversions for new thrill seekers, but it would be nice to see them put the old girl out to pastures or completely clean it up now. The queue alone needs a lot of work in my opinion!

We're unlikely to do much Merlin stuff between now and Halloween. Thank you for the feedback :)
I think Merlin's B&M slot more than likely went from Thorpe to AT for the Nemesis retrack (although sounds more like a complete rebuild than just a retrack). Can't see another B&M going into Forbidden Valley
I am not entirely sure what to think, but there is definitely more B&Ms coming to this country in the next 5-10 years :)
I'm not sure about closing forbidden valley, having two thrill rides closed and the roller coaster restaurant inaccessible from within the park would have an impact for the park. I also don't think they would have removed Nemesis, they removed other coasters because they lost value for the park but Nemesis is still highly rated by many and still draws people to the park
Nemesis was definitely under consideration for removal
Of course that’s assuming it takes an entire season to re-track, does it normally take that long to re-track a coaster?
It’s certainly not with PMBO but that is a different type of customer obviously and it’s only the tractor to be replaced and that I’m not the support🤔
It's not something that'll be done over a closed season, they will probably need to redo the whole thing. The foundations may need some work too. It will be like removing one coaster and building another.
Great video! However I have to absolutely disagree with mark on the fact that they will closes the whole of forbidden valley! They won’t risk having 3 rides closed, the park will just fence off nemesis, the park need Galactica for capacity reasons! However I really do agree that SW9 is going into forbidden valley

I was there on the 6th and they had done exactly that, closed an entire section without any notice or advertisement in the website or social media which disappointed a lot of people so I would maybe say yes they can close an entire section as they had 7 rides closed while I was there
If I ever go back on Smiler, I would take the single rider queue because I might have a chance of getting on the front or the second row. I wouldn’t ride smiler on the third or the fourth row because it will give an absolute stinker of a ride. Especially on that first drop, second part of the cobra roll and those last two corkscrews.
Honestly it just takes too much speed on the latter section. If those trim brakes on the second air time hill slow down the train, (not too much but noticeable enough) then that latter section would be bareable-ish.
There’s nothing enjoyable about it on the back row, has to be front or nothing.
A bit of advice please Scott. Or anybody.. I'm going to alton towers for the first time on Saturday. In which order should I do the rides to potentially avoid massive que times. Thank you.
Hi Paul, normally I would say start with Thirteen and Rita, then move to Oblivion and The Smiler, and work your way around the park from there. :)

i went to chessington yesterday and Aaron today, i have some words to say!
so yesterday ig took me hours to get into chessington, many rides were shut or closed/opened later than they should have and i did get a 5£ food voucher but because everyone was claiming them, all the good areas where so busy, i couldn’t even buy a meal (fries, burger and drink) for that voucher, absolutely appalled by the service i got
went to alton today but was also very annoyed, 13, spinball and blade were shut, really like all these rides here and took hours to once again get in, i managed to only get on a few rides, i was very upset since i was looking forward to both of these since these are the first weeks back
probably gonna go to pleasure beach and enjoy a good experience than go to a merlin park and be upset with the money i have paid for it!

Hope so! im sure when the events like mardi gras come round it will be great, i hope it was because of the crowds and when it does even actually die down a little it will be a lot better experience
I think vests are crap! I went on swarm for TP Passholder day, and I when waiting on the Brake Run, I couldn't breathe in too much, and it dug into my shoulders! They could operate without the vests themselves and keep the lap bar associated with the vests.
They definitely end up sitting too tight at times
I don't think it's going to be another B&M personally. They're keeping B&M sweet by spending on a big retrack and support. I have my own theory of what will happen, but could all be miles off. People will be flying drones over and doubt a secret could be kept these days. Great vlog though mate, enjoyed it. Thought there would be more of you lads for opening day. Keep up the great work!

I’m not entirely sure what they’ll do next, it’s a difficult one.
@@yourexperienceguide Personally believe they won't close the whole of the area for the retrack of nemesis as park could be really crowded... But I'm thinking another manufacturer (that hasn't been used in the park before) will get the nod for SW9. Announcement early 2023 with start of construction to take place end of 2024-2025.
From other peoples trip reports, they have seen the real flames still working, so it looks like they’re still there thankfully.
Possibly tone down slightly to save money but I don’t think they’ve gone completely🙂
I haven't seen any signs of the flames being on yet.
@@yourexperienceguide the flames were definitely on opening day, we queued for wicker man as our last ride of the day and they were on from at least 5:30- 7:30pm 🙂

I’m going to be honest and say I don’t think nemesis was going to go to begin with, whilst Towers aren’t usually sentimental about rollercoasters, nemesis I think is really too important and too big a part of what Towers on the map to begin with.
.Weather B&M did offer a cheaper quote to help encourage them to keep it I have no idea, but I like to think that even Merlin are smart enough to know that nemesis is just too important to get rid of and still has lots of years left in it.
Even John Wardley reckoned it wasn’t going anywhere and right up until his retirement he knew Merlin and Towers better than anybody🙂
Nemesis was very much under consideration for removal, it was never not being considered in the last few years. Alton Towers have never struggled marketing and building the hype of new rides when it is replacing an old favourite. Enthusiasts would have missed it more than anyone else.

I don’t get how you don’t like the smiler? I’ve always found it the best coaster in the UK? I enjoyed the video.
If it had lap bars/clamshell restraints it’d be a lot more enjoyable. I appreciate it has a huge fan base but it’s never going to be a favourite of mine whilst it is a head banger in places.
@@yourexperienceguide yeah that makes quite a bit of sense, I’ve never found it that rough in comparison to infusion, apart from those last corkscrews I will agree those are a killer.

Towers needs 2-3 big flat rides before SW9. I highly doubt we will see SW9 before 2025 due to Merlin Investments at Thorpe Park & Chessington
I think the retrosquad has proven there is a demand for some flat rides at the park but coasters will always be more marketable and generate more profit from the level of interest they bring to the park.
One train on Wicker Man? What is wrong with this park sometimes.
I think they’re short on engineers and it hasn’t helped unfortunately
it was on 2 trains the previous 2 buy out weekends , must be a problem with the trains , i’m sure it won’t be on purpose
