To look at a piece of artwork and appreciate it for its beauty and quality is one thing. . . but to have the opportunity to learn about the many other layers attached to its creation and history makes you appreciate the piece even more. What a terrific service provided by the Frick and its marvelous staff! While it only intensifies our desire to return to the Frick and its treasures, it also provides such an intimate and enlightening view of those treasures‑‑‑a more in-depth view that in virus-free times we would be unlikely to get. I so enjoyed the brief excursion through Bellini's "St. Francis in the Desert" a few weeks ago; it truly enhanced the pleasure of the painting itself. Highly recommended . . . along with all the other "Cocktail with a Curator" sessions. Kudos, Frick Collection! Keep them coming!
Another wonderful exposer of a piece of Art that has intrigued me since I did a sketch of it and the surrounding room on a first Friday where a nice stock of paper and several color pencils were provided by the Frick Museum staff. Thank you Xavier for explaining its history. It would be a nice idea to put one of these in place of every statue that has been ripped or torn down recently. So much time and effort goes into making any sculpture. It only takes seconds of thoughtlessness to destroy and hours months or years to make it. Unfortunately Hate is in every community. Once I was substitute teaching in an upscale Long Island community. I thought I was lucky to get an art class. They had a big pile of clay so after attendance I made small lifelike figures with the clay. They were nice. I was inspired by the high school students there. I guess the advanced placement class was in the morning. When I returned from lunch all the pieces were crushed by either students or teachers. I was devistated. These were only quick sketches. Imagine how the creators of Christopher Columbus' statues would feel if they knew what happened. Next maybe all of Gilbert Stuart's portraits of George Washington will be destroyed because he has slaves on his estate.
Wonderful....Please keep it after if possible. I am in Toronto, no travel to New york or Italy soon...was supposed to be in Italy in May.. You are also doing a civic duty uplifting us...like a mortal Angel... Thanks Judy

Fascinating! I have walked past this angel a thousand times and thought it was merely a "garden ornament!" Is the recent research available online? You know, this series could continue for, well, for decades. The Frick's depth continues to astonishes me. Bravo!

I look at the design and it has a lot of features that I would associate with something on top of a building. The body is thin to reduce wind drag and to make it light. The wings would pick up wind and act as a weathervane making the right hand point in the wind direction. Being bronze it would be quite durable. But, it is not weathered so it wasn't up there long, maybe is was still too heavy for that building. It was a failed design. But the art was so amazing that is was saved when it came down. It made a better sculpture on land than one in the sky. Also, the body of the angel is quite cannon shaped, it doesn't surprise me that it was cast (and maybe even designed) by a cannon maker.
Dear Mr. SAlamon it was again a fascinating guideline aroung Chanchapel and the Angel with the croix .I saw of course in Paris once it took upon mee a great impression soul and the spirit and transcendent.Loud must bee a chatoux misterious and can bee difficult to finde out the true past.Barbies Angel can illuminate?!
There is a delicious irony at the end; in that many works made by modern artists are made by anonymous brilliantly skilled "technicians" and signed only by the artists who designed and conceptualised them.

Just a comment on your reference to the date of the sculpture in this episode being 1475 and the unusual way of writing it as 1460+15. In French the number 75 is "soixante-quinze" or literally translated as "60 - 15". Could the date be written in the same way as the number was spoken? Just a thought. JG
