I saw this live as a teenager on the Dean Martin Show and thought it was hilarious. I’m seeing it in 2023 and still think it’s hilarious. As much as Deano’s laughing, I wonder how much Newhart is ad-libbing!
I suppose Dean could read his cue card but in order to surprise him and generate a spontaneous reaction from him he had no idea of what Bob was going to say, and, yeah, surprised he was !!!
"Are you sure you worked with Jerry?" (Jerry Lewis, who was a long-time partner with Dean) "Yeah, but our stuff wasn't this funny." Truly timeless.....
Loved that part. In my opinion their stuff( Martin and Lewis) was the best. Dean was always laughing when he was working with Jerry. They were more than just partners, they were like brothers.
I was lucky to see the great Mr. Newhart last night in Las Vegas, at the end of the show, he showed a montage of his great career highlights, and he showed this clip. It got just as big a laugh with those of us in the audience as it did back then. Even though I still think the "tape recorder" sketch with Bob and Dean is slightly funnier (The UG-2) This is a very very close second. SNL could only wish that could create this much laughter from breaking character as Dino (and of course, Carol, Tim and Harvey) did.

It's obvious that this skit wasn't rehearsed, hence Dean laughing. I could tell Dean was reading cue cards off-camera.
Dean didn’t like to rehearse, so they just went for it. Bob knew this bit cold, since he wrote it, so he could roll with anything Dean threw at him.
Bob is so awkwardly hilarious. He keeps it together better than Dean in this one too. Dean loses it fairly quickly, which is funny in its own right.
