    We've just returned from our first trip to NYC, we stayed in midtown but did go into Brooklyn to walk over the bridge and got the subway back uptown from City Hall. We are aiming to return next year and will explore more of LM now that we've got the "tourist attractions" out of the way. Very informative video thank you.

    We're a FilAm seniors from San Francisco that will be visiting NYC for 4 days Summer of 2022. We were in NYC about 20yrs ago for only 2 days. Because we took a train to
    Montreal. This time we will be on a plane coming from Montreal. After careful study of your videos. I decided to book our first 2 days stay at lower East Side. I wanted to have bagels with smoked salmon for breakfast so will stay at Houston St Close to my daughter bagels and also love pastrami on rye sandwiches. And then book a2 night hotel near time square. I have lots of time before our trip. things can change. We had travelled a lot and in different part of the world. I know that a good planning is very important. Thank you so much for your videos. I will be studying it every day.

    Nice video. You look very young, but I remember the East Village back in the seventies. Man, that area was so bad, cops wouldn't even answer calls there. I have a cousin who live in the EV for a number of years. She's since moved out to Astoria. She says aside from the rents becoming outrageous, crime is still very much an issue.

    • @UrbanCaffeine
      @UrbanCaffeine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's great! The weather should be great by then. For food, my personal favorite area to check out is Greenwich and the East Village. But every neighborhood tends to have their own culinary gems.
      If it's your first time, the classic spots like Central Park, World Trade Center, Chinatown, Time Square, an observation deck on any of the tall towers (Top of the Rock, One World, or The Edge) are recommended. Those double decker bus ride tours are pretty good.
      As a local, I really like the Highline, walking the Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn into Manhattan, and taking the NYC ferry along the East River. Hopefully I can make a tourist video soon!

    Excellent, just the kind of videos I was looking for. Many Thanks! Could you put up a scale bar on the map so we can gauge the size of the areas? Also, are some of the areas noticeably small when walking through them? On the map for example, Little Italy looks tiny

    • @UrbanCaffeine
      @UrbanCaffeine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there. I basically used Google Maps if you want to reference that for scale (I can't edit the video). Little Italy and other areas are indeed small. Manhattan is actually not that big. I can cross it from east to west in about 45 mins to an hour.

    No real New Yorker says let’s go to the Bowery section of Manhattan like we say let’s go to the Village or East Village. We just combine that section into the neighborhood we are going to. Example “upper Bowery would just be the East Village.

    I believe that Greenwich Village was named after a place in England. Greenwich Mean Time GMT is 0 degrees longitude and all other time zones radiate out of Greenwich. The Bowery is from the Dutch - at one time this was Skidrow. The Civic District was once Five Points: it vied with London's Whitechapel District as the worst slum in the Western world. Back in my youth Center St was NYC police hq. The surrounding area was residential with a character all it's own. Since then Police Plaza has evolved and most of the neighborhood is now gov't buildings. The late, great Al Smith - Governor of NY and 1928 Presidential candidate was born in Two Bridges in 1873. He was the first Roman Catholic to run for President. America wasn't ready for a Catholic yet.

    I read somewhere that that the spelling of William Houstoun's name was just mispelled to Houston on some of the signs and the rest is history.Then somehow ,even his name is known to be now😂 spelled both ways maybe because of this supposed mishap.Dont know if any of this is true. But, love the area.

    I’m a native New Yorker. Lower Manhattan refers to the financial district south of Chambers Street. Greenwich Village isn’t considered part of Lower Manhattan. Also, Bowery really isn’t a neighborhood.
    It’s pronounced Laugh-fay-yet, not La-fai-yet.
    My favorite neighborhood is Chinatown. There are many great restaurants. Also, you can take in the sites and sounds. Washington Square Park is also a nice hangout place. Whenever the weather’s nice, they have outdoor concerts.
