Southern brooklyn above the beaches has a large middle eastern Jewish community with many middle eastern restaurants 3. Southern Sheepshead Bay has many fantastic restaurants by/near the waterfront 4. Northern Sheepshead Bay has a small chinatown
The first IKEA piece I purchased was a LYCKSELE "sleeper sofa" / futon. I got it at the Elizabeth, NJ store, which was the first one in the NYC metro area.
On the county name it’s Kings as it’s Queens. Both are plural. I believe King County is in Washington-in the Seattle area. If you google Brooklyns original towns you will see why the street grid is laid out the way it is. Williamsburg was at one point a separate city within Brooklyns modern borders. Back then the city of Brooklyn was mostly what is downtown and a few surrounding areas. But eventually Williamsburg couldn’t hack it and Brooklyn annexed it.
I used to live in 17th St., Prospect Park West. I miss there so much. But at the same time I’m happy also to have my own home in Maryland and not stuck in an apartment; everything has its pros and cons.
I live in Brownsville at the border of East Flatbush off of East 98th Street on Hegeman ave. There is the 3 elevated on Livonia ave and two L stops at Livonia and New Lots Ave. There is subway service for most.
Something majorly important that is missing form this video is the amazing and long standing African American, Caribbean, and African communities in Brooklyn. Many in some of the places that are now being gentrified. One in particular is Fort Greene and Bed Stuy. Spike Lee is from Fort Greene and Chris Rock is from Bed Stuy. Not to mention Jay-Z, Biggie, Lil Kim, and many other influential hip hop artists are from Brooklyn.

I actually live in Southwestern Brooklyn 5 minutes away from the Verrazano Bridge closer to Staten Island. It would say my neighborhood is 75% Chinese 25% Italian. I’m like in the Dyker,Bath Beach Bensonhurst area. I love it since I was first born 21 years ago. Thinking about how much it changed since the 1950s all Italian Americans came to Bensonhurst and years later try Chinese would take over bath beach and Bensonhurst! I wouldn’t say Bensonhurst itself, sunset park has Chinatown. If you think about it a few neighborhoods in Brooklyn have different cultures. Let’s start with a few neighborhoods that have different nationalities 1. Bay Ridge: Islamic/Turkish 2. Sunset Park: Mexican,Chinese 3. Borough Park, Williamsburg,Midwood: Jewish 4. Bensonhurst:Chinese,Italian, American, Mexican, Islam/Turkish 5. Bedford Stuyvesant, Downtown Brooklyn, East New York,Canarsie,Crown Heights: African American, Jamaican, Haitian 6. Brighton Beach,Manhattan Beach, Russian. Just to name a few neighborhoods with different nationalities.

I'm Chinese American and honestly didn't realize how many Chinese enclaves there were until I moved into NYC. I'm from the West Coast where Chinese people are the predominant non-white ethnicity. It's interesting to see how demographics change over time. I used to enjoy pouring over different census information for my hometown and see the ebbs and flows.

I watched a documentary on TV saying that there is a building in Manhattan where most billionaires live and once you drive down this street and cross the bridge into Brooklyn you will land on low-income households. The documentary said the two realities are divided by Brooklyn's bridge, but they lived on the very same street. Would you cover this on a video?
Bit of trivia: Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, etc are still often referred to by locals as South Brooklyn though it's nowhere near being the southernmost part of the borough. That's because in the old days they were the areas south of the old Village of Brooklyn (now Brooklyn Heights). That's why what's really south Brooklyn is still often referred to as southern Brooklyn instead.
I wish you had given a bigger shoutout to Eastern Brooklyn i.e. Canarise Park, Haitian and Dominican Populations, etc. Also shoutout to Mill Basin! My friends and I took a day trip there to see what its like. EVERY house is HUGE and has a pool, who woulda known?
Hi Thea thanks for the history of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Even though I was born in Brooklyn, I didn't realize all these different neighborhood names. One fact from 41st to 44th Street between 5th and 7th Avenue I grew up going to Sunset Park swimming pool there. I just realized Sunset Park is a landmark in NYC now. I Ive friends that live in Brooklyn so when I visit NYC I see more of it than Manhattan nowadays. I love that I always find some new neighbourhood or district with every visit
When I lived in Jersey I would often get a Nathans Jones, an addiction to Coney Island Franks. I would drive from Perth Amboy (Outerbridge Crossing) up Staten Island to the Verazano. Then a quick ride to Atlantic Ave and Ocean Pkwy then the mecca of all things Amurcan, A Nathans' Coney Island hot dog. My grandmother's stepdad was an architect who designed the Borough Park development. It more than paid the bills for the family! Other than that, I got lost in Bay Ridge once wandering off the beaten Belt Parkway. On another note, why don't you like roller coasters? You don't have to like them for sure, but maybe give them another try. Maybe. A suggestion.
I grew up in Midwood, which also has a huge Orthodox Jewish community (along with ones not mentioned in Crown Heights and Williamsburg.) Fun fact is that the Jews who live there will say they live in Flatbush and the term Midwood is rarely used.
You should do a video about two fare neighborhoods in New York City. I grew up in old mill basin which is two miles from the nearest subways so I always had to drive or take the b100 to a train station. Or the BM1 to downtown or midtown.
Very informative! Thanks for posting. There’s one thing that I’d like to clarify. It’s a bit imprecise to say that Borough Park is a Jewish neighborhood. Borough Park is predominantly Hasidic. There are Jewish people living throughout NYC, and there are many different sects and denominations. However, the Hasidic movement is a particular sect within the Jewish community. They are especially insular, and their customs are unique. They are recognizable by their distinctive attire.
Great video. My father was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Flatbush. He attended Midwood High School (Class of 1953). My grandparents eventually moved to Long Beach after my grandfather retired and I have fond memories of visiting them as a kid 😃

A long time ago like 20 years, lol. Williamsburg was just that. Their was no East Williamsburg. I can go on about the changes "gentrification" but overall some changes were for the better.
There are some very interesting and unique homes in Mill Basin as well as some stories about the people living there. One of them had a manned guard shack, lots of cameras, and two German Sheppards on guard and it was just a residential home. Also, the former home of a Russian heiress and later owned by a mobster.

biggest missed detail about Floyd Bennett is that it was NYC's first municipal airport and is the largest campground within NYC. It's been utilized multiple times by the federal government during times of crisis from being an HQ for FEMA in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy to being one of the spots chosen to build shelters for the 2023 wave of migrants. Also where NYPD, MTA, and Sanitation train to operate their vehicles. It also hosts a small US Marine base, along with the army outpost at fort hamilton, it makes Brooklyn home to two military branches, the most among the five boroughs.
I think you do a good job and no it’s not possible to cover EVERYTHING in an 11 minute video. With that said, how could you not discuss Bed-Stuy in your break down?
I lived in Mill Basin for two years and it was the furthest thing from Hipsterland you could imagine, kind of like an upscale Russian mob suburb. Also wanted to mention that a lot of the SoBro nabes have express buses which run to Manhattan for "easy access".

He's responsible for all the beautiful architectural designs of the parks, including the many bridges and arches. I feel so grateful to both him and Olmsted for their foresight and genius.
I live near the Brighton Beach area and its more like an eastern eruopean type neighborhood. If you like uzbek or georgian food then brighton is an okay place. Also Coney Island and Brighton have fireworks every friday during the summer.

The North to South Alphabetized streets which crossover into actual names alo g brooklyn with the split at at least some points Nostrand Avenue. Ave A - Albemarle Avenue B- Beverley Rd, Avenue C - Clarendon Rd, Ave D-Dorchester/Dimas, and so on.

(from Wikipedia) I knew this when I was growing up in Bay Ridge during the 1950s-60s.
East Brooklyn looks like 1950s or 1930s suburbs? What the heck. Canarsie and some parts of Cypress Hills fit that bill. Brownsville, East NY, and Cypress Hills are projects and other dense forms of housing. Starrett City developed in the 1970s is also its own unique neighborhood that has a security force insulating it from the border it shares with the highly underprivileged neighborhood of East NY. Also we have these things called buses that run really well cause car and population density are quite low, thanks to the absence of subway access.

The borough of Brooklyn in the state of New York is also known as Kings County, not King County. The letter s on the end of it's name makes a difference. King County is in the state of Washington in the northwest across the border from British Columbia, Canada.
Hi Urban Caffeine, I have a question that might required some "New Yorking", is there a historical reason why many hospitals are located along the East River on the East side of Manhattan, or why there is a cluster of hospitals in central Brooklyn? Some of these are old hospitals, so I don't think they are build for the residential demographic needs of today, but I can't seem to find any reason why they are there. Also along with the theme of Brooklyn, can you talk about the history the large area of buildings along the Upper New York Bay, such as Navy Yard and Army Terminals? Another video idea, can you please talk about the area between Greenpoint and LIC, they have all kinds of industrial sites over there but also many luxury lofts, converted apartments, and glitzy newly built apartments. I don't explore that area. How about the area of New York along Long Island Sound (the Bronx side and the Queens side) or all the areas between Manhattan and Bronx along the Harlem River?
this was so helpful as someone who's looking to move to NYC and realizing its quite unrealistic to try to get an apartment for 1000$ or less in Manhattan. This gave me such a good (beginning) idea of what Brooklyn is like!
As a Brooklynite no mention of the influence from non hipster culture such as Puerto Ricans blacks Italians Jews and Irish ? Thank goodness the whole Bk hasn’t gentrified yet. South Brooklyn hoods such as Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Gravesend, Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Sheepshead Bay for the most part remain unchanged in their landscape although the demographics are changing and Bath Beach just saw 2 high rise luxury towers go up along the belt parkway. We also still have over 95 housing projects in Brooklyn. As someone who was raised in bed-stuy and Bushwick the projects there that are still standing such as Marcy, Tompkins, sumner, Roosevelt, Bushwick/hope gardens, and LG still impact and make a presence felt there. Bay Ridge still has affordable dive bars to chill at night and East New York and Brownsville still have that old BKLYN feel to it as it was during the 90s and early 00s and so does certain blocks of SunSet park and Borough Park.

I grew up in Midwood, which also has a huge Orthodox Jewish community (along with ones not mentioned in Crown Heights and Williamsburg.) Fun fact is that the Jews who live there will say they live in Flatbush and the term Midwood is rarely used.

The 14th St-Canarsie line goes through Brooklyn on an "El" and ends at Canarsie which is the proverbial "end of the line".

You should do a video about two fare neighborhoods in New York City. I grew up in old mill basin which is two miles from the nearest subways so I always had to drive or take the b100 to a train station. Or the BM1 to downtown or midtown.

Very informative! Thanks for posting. There’s one thing that I’d like to clarify. It’s a bit imprecise to say that Borough Park is a Jewish neighborhood. Borough Park is predominantly Hasidic. There are Jewish people living throughout NYC, and there are many different sects and denominations. However, the Hasidic movement is a particular sect within the Jewish community. They are especially insular, and their customs are unique. They are recognizable by their distinctive attire.
Great video. My father was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Flatbush. He attended Midwood High School (Class of 1953). My grandparents eventually moved to Long Beach after my grandfather retired and I have fond memories of visiting them as a kid 😃

A long time ago like 20 years, lol. Williamsburg was just that. Their was no East Williamsburg. I can go on about the changes "gentrification" but overall some changes were for the better.

There are some very interesting and unique homes in Mill Basin as well as some stories about the people living there. One of them had a manned guard shack, lots of cameras, and two German Sheppards on guard and it was just a residential home. Also, the former home of a Russian heiress and later owned by a mobster.
The acronym D.U.M.B.O was lifted by Brooklyn developers. It began as taxi driver radio lingo for the Manhattan side of the bridge.
Bergen Beach is a very interesting neighborhood. It used to be an island

biggest missed detail about Floyd Bennett is that it was NYC's first municipal airport and is the largest campground within NYC. It's been utilized multiple times by the federal government during times of crisis from being an HQ for FEMA in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy to being one of the spots chosen to build shelters for the 2023 wave of migrants. Also where NYPD, MTA, and Sanitation train to operate their vehicles. It also hosts a small US Marine base, along with the army outpost at fort hamilton, it makes Brooklyn home to two military branches, the most among the five boroughs.

I lived in Mill Basin for two years and it was the furthest thing from Hipsterland you could imagine, kind of like an upscale Russian mob suburb. Also wanted to mention that a lot of the SoBro nabes have express buses which run to Manhattan for "easy access".

Thank you for explaining this complex neighborhood! Just wanted to mention that Prospect Park and Central Park were both designed by TWO people. Calvert Vaux shouldn't be left out. He's responsible for all the beautiful architectural designs of the parks, including the many bridges and arches. I feel so grateful to both him and Olmsted for their foresight and genius.

I live near the Brighton Beach area and its more like an eastern eruopean type neighborhood. If you like uzbek or georgian food then brighton is an okay place. Also Coney Island and Brighton have fireworks every friday during the summer.

The North to South Alphabetized streets which crossover into actual names alo g brooklyn with the split at at least some points Nostrand Avenue.
Ave A - Albemarle Avenue B- Beverley Rd, Avenue C - Clarendon Rd, Ave D-Dorchester/Dimas, and so on.
I'd say Greenpoint is now a Hipster neighborhood with some Polish mixed in!

You can actually walk into Queens from certain areas of Brooklyn. Some people reside in Brooklyn and their neighbors across the street are in Queens.
I’ve walked from Williamsburg to Sunnyside in Queens before! Quite the hike but it’s do-able lol

Interesting fact: back in the early 1900s, "In 1907, the completion of the Williamsburg Bridge facilitated the immigration of Jews and Italians from the Lower East Side of Manhattan who moved to Bedford-Styvesant. I knew this when I was growing up in Bay Ridge during the 1950s-60s.
East Brooklyn looks like 1950s or 1930s suburbs? What the heck. Canarsie and some parts of Cypress Hills fit that bill. Brownsville, East NY, and Cypress Hills are projects and other dense forms of housing. Starrett City developed in the 1970s is also its own unique neighborhood that has a security force insulating it from the border it shares with the highly underprivileged neighborhood of East NY.
Also we have these things called buses that run really well cause car and population density are quite low, thanks to the absence of subway access.

The borough of Brooklyn in the state of New York is also known as Kings County, not King County. The letter s on the end of it's name makes a difference. King County is in the state of Washington in the northwest across the border from British Columbia, Canada.
Hi Urban Caffeine, I have a question that might required some "New Yorking", is there a historical reason why many hospitals are located along the East River on the East side of Manhattan, or why there is a cluster of hospitals in central Brooklyn? Some of these are old hospitals, so I don't think they are build for the residential demographic needs of today, but I can't seem to find any reason why they are there.
Also along with the theme of Brooklyn, can you talk about the history the large area of buildings along the Upper New York Bay, such as Navy Yard and Army Terminals?
Another video idea, can you please talk about the area between Greenpoint and LIC, they have all kinds of industrial sites over there but also many luxury lofts, converted apartments, and glitzy newly built apartments. I don't explore that area.
How about the area of New York along Long Island Sound (the Bronx side and the Queens side) or all the areas between Manhattan and Bronx along the Harlem River?

this was so helpful as someone who's looking to move to NYC and realizing its quite unrealistic to try to get an apartment for 1000$ or less in Manhattan. This gave me such a good (beginning) idea of what Brooklyn is like!
As a Brooklynite no mention of the influence from non hipster culture such as Puerto Ricans blacks Italians Jews and Irish ? Thank goodness the whole Bk hasn’t gentrified yet. South Brooklyn hoods such as Bensonhurst,
Bath Beach, Gravesend,
Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Sheepshead Bay for the most part remain unchanged in their landscape although the demographics are changing and Bath Beach just saw 2 high rise luxury towers go up along the belt parkway. We also still have over 95 housing projects in Brooklyn. As someone who was raised in bed-stuy and Bushwick the projects there that are still standing such as Marcy, Tompkins, sumner, Roosevelt, Bushwick/hope gardens, and LG still impact and make a presence felt there. Bay Ridge still has affordable dive bars to chill at night and East New York and Brownsville still have that old BKLYN feel to it as it was during the 90s and early 00s and so does certain blocks of SunSet park and Borough Park.
