  • Pianist and producer Robert Glasper talks about Neo Soul, a musical style that was successful in the early 2000s. Speculation about its decline is mainly attributed to the authentic origins of the music movement with clashes with the behaviors of the industry, aimed at producing conventional music.

The situation is also true in the UK where black artists in soul music have been passed over while the likes of Adele and Amy Winehouse. have become huge stars. BBC Radio has a virtual monopoly in the UK and has ignored many black artists in soul, rap, grime and drill in favour of white artists. Great interview, an intelligent and comprehensive perspective of the situation by Robert Glasper..

When people talk Neo Soul, they tend to forget Omar from the UK. In the early 90s he was already pushing his music towards the direction Neo-Soul was going..... Soul II Soul as well........

I love hearing Robert talk about his early days in Brooklyn, where is lived close by and hung out with Bilal, Erikah, Common, etc. What a great era. I also love how he describes what neo-soul is and it's history. He's such a great guy.

He is right everybody was buging out over it and the conscious artists related to that style moreso then the R&B pop music and like he said the poetry artists wanted that neo soul band sound behind their poetry..and the female artists just took over the whole thing..to Erica badu..Gopelle..ledesi ..dwelle was one of the last ones to abandon the style and he was great ..i think he realized that nobody was really trying to see a whole neo soul show ..only the new york city clubs would apreciate him or philly..he isnt going to sell out The Lincoln center you can believe that ....i think the guy who had the perfect blend right in the middle of jazz and neo soul was trumpeter Roy hargrove ..i really liked it cause he had just enough neo in his jazz music..

    In my opinion,
When the Superstars of neosoul (D'angelo, Maxwell, Lauren Hill) retired it hurt the market share of the genre.

Soul Never Dies… Neo Soul is taking on a whole new life of its own right now.. it’s becoming cool again to play your own instruments & have your own sound. This music will outlast everything else, because it’s the purest expression of the HUMAN SPIRIT 👼 🙏 🎶
And P.S spot on about DLR… he says in his interviews ALL THE TIME how it was the GREAT Soul Singers of his time that are his greatest influences
