  • I wish that the mainstream media and the public actually cared about real authenticity. because Neo soul was something so undeniably powerful. By my definition, it was more than just a music genre... it was a movement.
    A movement deserving to be rewarded, cherished, and honored.

    Really enjoyed how you showed the evolution across time and artists. I’ve always loved Eryka Badu, but I wasn’t as aware of many of her peers. Thank you!

    Neo soul has a timeless quality to its sound, and that's what separates it from conventional R&B. I still listen to the Groove Theory album to this day, and every time I do, I simply cannot believe it came out in 1995. It still sounds so fresh, like it could have come out today! Listen to any mainstream R&B album from that time and it sounds very much like a '90s record. Like if you listen to 702's "No Doubt" album which came out around the same time, it's a great album but it sounds very '90s. Neo soul is just a different beast.
    You can always sort of pinpoint the '90s sound, the '80s sound, etc. But neo soul is much more difficult to pinpoint. You can never really tell which decade it came from from sound alone.

      That reminds me of the interview erykah badu did with MSNBC when she was asked about her music being discovered by new generations she said that back then a lot of her generation didn’t really understand where she was coming from with her music. But now the younger generation fully gets it.

    It died out cuz the artists rejected the genre and didnt want to be called "neo soul". They didnt want to be categorized as different than the soul artists that inspired them, and they didnt want to be pigeon-holed. So they started venturing out into other things and created new terms for what they were doing (like Raphael Saadiq naming his sound "gospeldelic"). Another example of this rejection is Jaguar Wright naming her album "Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul"

      Right, when Erykah told us she wasn’t neo soul, that she didn’t want to be in a box, there was no one to hold the torch for this term, I’m 40yrs old I was there for the whole movement. Les Nubians also never gets mentioned but they carried Neo soul over seas with floetry, jazzy fat nasties…. I could go on….lol

      A lot of artists after 2010 are classified as alternative R&B rather than neo soul. Those you mentioned fit into this era, which incorporates elements of electronic and alternative music that neo soul didn't

    • @VettieSincere
      @VettieSincere  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’ve never heard of kalisway,amber mark, kelela, or amaria.- you just gave me a few artists to research lol the rest I have heard of
      -I listen to Steve lacy but I don’t really think he’s “Neo Sol” bc his music has instruments and flows that reminds me of rock/funk with some r&b.
      -Kirby Destin Conrad, and Tems are all under the alternative r&b umbrella only bc of their use of electronical instruments most neo soul artists use live instruments like Cleo Sol (who I love) in her music you can hear physical instruments being used. The same thing with Anderson Paak all of their music is reminiscent of 70s soul from Marvin Gaye, Stevie wonder etc.
      Btw
      Thanks for the compliment & for giving me new artists to look into. Thank you for watching!

    Thats right.. maybe is just how that era was meant to sound. Because you know doja cat did neo soul tracks and lots of old school hip hop in her recent album. But it didnt feel like so much evolving. Just going back to something that was so powerful it just can not be back with that same intensitiy and purism to big again. I honestly enjoy the references in modern r&b because it actually matches our era much more

    Interestingly, Beyonce initially wanted to break out as a pseudo Neo-soul artist. Your can hear elements of it in her debut album and her first single was supposed to be “Work it out”. Clearly, life had other plans lol
