Day 48 of EPIC | Intense Bodyweight and Dumbbell Upper Body Workout

  • Total upper body workout using bodyweight and dumbbells as resistance to help strengthen the arms, shoulders, chest, back and core!
    For this upper body workout, you will need a pair of dumbbells, a mat and a chair to rest hand on for single arm rows and dips. The dumbbells I am using for your reference are 12.5kg x 2 and 8kg x 2. You can of course use one pair of dumbbells!
    I am using the chair for some seated shoulders however you can stand if preferred! I also use the chair for pull overs but again, this is not required. You can perform pullovers on the mat; just ensure dumbbell is is held parallel to mat so you can get a deeper stretch without hitting the mat so soon.
    If you prefer not to place feet on chair, simple perform push ups instead of decline push ups and pike push ups with feet on the mat.
    The timer will be on for 45 seconds of work, 15 seconds to get ready for next exercise!
    Remember to go at a moderate pace, particularly when pressing overhead. During the lowering part of an exercise such as bent over rows, lateral raises, sweeps etc it is the eccentric movement that a lot of work happens so really focused on this part of the lift... you should try to lower as slowly as feasible!
    With the skull crusher push ups, push the outsides of the hands into the mat to extend the arms. You can perform tricep or diamond instead to strength the triceps if you prefer.

    This finisher is a tough one.. make sure you don’t hold your breath!
    Remember to have fun!! It’s ok to stop... when I stop I consider it a positive as I’m pushing myself.. not simply doing the motions. Also this is limited rest with the exercises grouped so various movements all on the shoulders for example with only 15 seconds rest!

    I love that she does not speak during the exercises. I can't stand those trainers trying to "motivate" us shouting and puffing. She is great!

      ya it was pretty awkward when she yell motived us on day 46 during the slow pushup. I fell out of the move laughing.

      Affirmations aren't all bad. It was helpful when I was beginning my TH-cam search for fitness instructors, but generally now I prefer the music as loud as I want and my own sound effects, such as grunting, telling myself I can do it, telling Caroline she's insane... you know, the usual 😆

    Are those my arms? are those my legs? ARE THOSE MY ABS ?! The mirror is sending me back an image that I really like. These 10 weeks have sculpted my body and mind through physical effort and mental focus. I have been training for 18 years and have never achieved the results I see now with the EPIC program.     I call this one Caroline speaks, because we get to hear her voice a lot in this one. I like that there is no talking for most of these workouts, but it is nice to hear Caroline speak some tips once and a while, in her lovely northern Irish accent.

    I did this one yesterday, two more workouts to go then I'm jumping right into Epic 2! I wanted to comment and say I actually kinda liked the periodic check ins to help us keep our form in check. I agree with most other viewers that the lack of talking is nice, but I think most are referring to no annoying encouragements (the encouragement for the 40 second push-ups are nice though). I really liked the posture comments though and almost wish they were present in earlier videos. Those are so very helpful whereas a "C'mon everyone! Push through it! Move it!" is not so much, lol.

      Hi Caroline...just finished! I won’t pick out any particular tough highlights today as it was all hard...but very rewarding too...I enjoyed pushing myself! I enjoyed hearing your voice...what was reassuring was that each time you gave us a pointer that was how I was doing the exercise! I have been lucky to work with really good instructors over the years...of course this includes you!!!...so I think my form in doing exercises is quite good!     This is the only one of the Epic series that i haven't liked, and here's why:
    I felt like I was always using the wrong weight dumbbells, some with the lighter weight felt too heavy, and some with the heavier ones felt too light, and everything in between. Was I using the wrong ones? I don't know. The visual difference between your two sets of dumbbells isn't clearly obvious.
    One way to possibly fix this would be to put a note on the preview window of 'lighter' or 'heavier' dumbbells.
    Keep up the great work Caroline, you're making the world (at least some of us) much stronger and motivated!!!

    Everytime I feel a move is tough, Caroline, u make it easier by making me do a more tougher one. I now can do push ups and I see definition in abs🥺 u made me move past my desire to look aesthetically appealing but to discover what iam physically capable of doing, working out has now became as regular as going to sleep.     Honestly, I've tried so many fitness influencers and although I've built strength and a healthier lifestyle through starting off with them--- and I've hit a plateau for 7 months--- it was through this epic program where inches finally started trimming off my body and I've felt more stronger than before. & What's crazy is that this is only the beginning.       @@matthewalmond4688 Hi Matthew. So glad that you feel the same. I love gym too, but every time I have to motivate myself to go. Then during the workout you have to think if the machine that you need is occupied, and you always want to check your phone haha. Then now I spend more time at home, and 1h a day is totally reasonable, the best thing is that I really see result! So great!

      Same, I have trouble keeping up a reasonable pace when working out on my own without slowing down too much, so I also prefer classes! Though Caroline's classes take me more like 1.5-2 hours (including some extra stretching at the end).

    I started this program after I got an injury from my covid shot being placed too low in my arm. This meant that I had nerve pain that would radiate up my dominate arm and into my shoulder where it rotates. At the beginning it was nearly impossible to do anything on my injured arm.
    I kept working through the pain hoping that if I just kept strengthening the muscles it would help heal the injury from the shot. Any weight bearing on my right side was nearly impossible at first and the stretches where we rotate our arms front and back was too painful to do.
    I’m happy to report that as I progressed through this program and kept pushing through the pain I can say that I hardly feel any pain anymore. When we stretched our arms forward and back I didn’t feel the pain at all! I am so happy! Thank you Caroline! You helped me take what I thought was a life long injury and turn it into a full recovery.

Don’t usually suffer too much with muscle soreness but really did this week... gonna miss the Friday full body! I just loved a Friday... I might have to do the stretch and a full body!

    I’m always apprehensive about upper body day (bc of the shoulder workouts) but then I saw that you incorporated lots of movements you’ve shown us throughout the program and tied them all together into ONE let’s “show out” workout!     my first week of epic i said "these are really hard, I dont think I'll do the full challenge because I think it might be bad for me mentally." Instead, I decided to give myself the chance. Just this one challenge. 48 days (plus plenty of rest days) later I can do more pushups than ever. My body has changed so much and I can lift dumbbells as heavy as my brothers can (and even heavier). I feel like a completely new person, one who is more strong, more confident, and more ready to push my body's limits. Thank you for this gift Caroline, weight training is the new love of my life and I cant wait to continue getting stronger.

    Few words from my side for such an EPIC program. I am not that good in expressing.Before starting I was not sure how iam going to do it because I have never tried such challenges before. So now, what EPIC has teach me first and foremost YES you can do it. I have never dared to do such exercises I never knew about them also. While doing workout I always thought I have always underestimated my self, if you try any thing can happen. Second I can easily see how my strength has improved 💪💪💪. There were a time I was not able to get up from floor with out taking support. I never imagined I will able to do squats on toes. Third if we get a teacher like you any student can learn. How was EPIC? Definitely very much challenging, fun , energetic. When ever HIIT day I used to be like beast mode on. Now most toughest days of EPIC day ofcourse day 1 then 7, 21, 30 and 39 till now.( Especially day 7 because I clearly remember My legs were sore for almost a week). My dream is to do HIIT like Caroline with such energy. Thank you so much Caroline, looking forward for many more . Best wishes to you ❤.     I really like the addition of the voice over for tips on exercise form. I agree that it's nice to not have someone talking the whole time, but verbal cues are very helpful. Thanks, Caroline!

    Finishing off the last epic arms workout with my first time lifting 3-4kg!!! Absolutely loved this and those dips were a killer!!!!! I can say that your arms workouts are my absolute favorite and as a matter of fact that’s how I found your channel! I’m very grateful that I did❤️❤️ I remember being upset about not being able to do rows with proper form on my left side and now here I am today doing it perfectly with 3kg!!!!! I’ve gotten so much stronger, as many many others have and it’s all thanks to you Caroline and the hard work we’ve all put into ourselves and these amazing workouts! Thank you thank you thank you.

    Hey Caroline! There are only so many ways to say thank you and at this rate, I think I’m gonna run out of creative ways to express my gratitude, considering so many kind words already here ❤️. Anyway, a few days ago I picked up my trx after leaving it dormant for the past 8 months. I gave it a try starting out with push ups. And I was surprised that not only my strength had not degraded, I actually performed pushups more gracefully than ever! Back straight, core and quad tight, coming all the way down, chest briefly touching the ground and controlling all the way up, keeping my form. I would be more than happy to see your take on trx in the post Epic era ( it’s still gonna be epic no matter what you call it!💪😁)

    Its so bittersweet to almost be finished with epic 😮‍💨 those dips at the end got me!! Thank you Caroline so much for providing these workouts. My body has progressed so much and I am starting to see definition in my thighs, arms, shoulders, and stomach. I am so glad I found this channel!!

      Just finished. Awesome workout .Dips with straight leg I did for 30 second s and than back to folded leg .Finisher was so tough after all the workout I did dips with bend legs still that was difficult .Enjoyed it Thanks Caroline .Have a nice day...

    Just finished this EPIC workout and can hardly type! Arms are spaghetti! They feel so happily worked! I love that my shoulders are now noticeably "pumped" after these arm workouts. I feel sooo good. Thank you, Caroline for being such a fantastic trainer. Your EPIC program has made such a positive change in my life!

    This was a great workout @caroline. Some new additions I noticed that I appreciate ... your commenting on certain workouts, talking about form, speed and control was appreciated. As are the beeps as you switch cool down moves from one to another. Keep up the EPIC workouts!

    Yes I have completed epic 1. For people that read the comments but still not sure go for. It’s a great workout. You can make it fit your fitness levels and you will definitely feel stronger at the end. A very good all round structured program. You only have to look at Caroline to see that she knows exactly what she’s doing and helping us look and feel better. I don’t think there is a single body part that has not been flexed lengthened or stretched in some way shape or form. Thanks Caroline. Now for advent with the recommended add on

    Great workout Caroline. I did find it hard to distinguish between 12.5kg dumbbell & 8kg from the video, but tried to watch carefully. This would be a great idea to add when the exercise information is on the screen..

    It’s taken me well over 7 months to get this far in this challenge but I still feel as strong as I’ve been in a long long time. As a 34 year old man who has been lifting weights since I was 13...this is the best program I’ve ever done. Two more to go! Then I gotta see if I can motivate myself to do Epic II

    Oooohhh what a super wonderful EPIC day. I had a one time krav maga (self defense ) workshop/extended class this morning , that was amazing. Then I had some errands to run and that meant some driving as well. So I came back home and took a nap. And I so needed still do the work outs , to be honest my mind and body were asking for it LOL. So I smashed day 47 and day 48 in a row and I feel totally super EPIC. Amazing sessions again and the music for day 47 absolutely rocks!!!!! "See" you all on Friday. Thanks again Caroline!!

    My shoulders are sore from Monday. The push-ups for definitely a struggle but I pushed through. Thank you so much Caroline. Your combinations are so effective in 10 weeks by body has changed more than it has in years of working out with weights at a gym. I stopped going to the gym after my fourth child and then had a fifth child and continue to work out at home because it's so much more convenient.

    The 25-lb dumbbells I'd ordered from Caroline's Amazon page just arrived last weekend and I finally got to try them out with this workout. Woo-weeeee! Had to take more breaks and eventually drop back down to 20 or 15 lbs for some of the latter exercises, but it's awesome to be able to workout with the heaviest weights I've ever used for shoulders. Proof positive of all the progress achieved thanks to Caroline!

    When everything is going smoothly, my grip is working fine, and my arms is messing up the whole thing. I just wanna curse at my arms they are so weak I can't 🤦🏻‍♀️. As a beginner in lifting, lifting 10lbs has been an achievement for me. Used my 10lbs at the whole time. Tried using my 5lbs at wide curls and the burn is real after using my 10lbs for the whole time. It doesn't hurt like day 46 but the burn is real! I had a hard time doing sweep but I still use my 10s anyway. Tried practicing my push up here and my arms are too weak swear but I won't give up. 10lbs burn so much that I can't feel a thing with 5 it is so light. Thank u, Caroline! 2 more days then I am done. So excited for epic 2. ❤

    i cannot believe I I I have done all these till date. still hate abs and push ups up then again you have to do what you dont like to succeed right. on the other hand my strength and stamina for abs and push ups has come along way thanks to me trying.

    Another superb Upper Body session with numerous movements that you can feel working. Chest was still tight from Monday but I love these workouts so couldn't wait to get at it. Great Shoulder set to get you on the way and they were burning by the time I got to the one arm press. A struggle to keeping going without a rest but just finished the last one as the timer went. Then you realise you have the Arnolds and the 90' hold to open..... double burnout. Really love the Chest set and had a little chuckle to myself as you know that after Diamond press will come Diamond pushups and after Tricep press will come Tricep Pushups.....Back was great and then the Biceps and Ticeps... so love those kneeling curl to presses and then Around the Worlds. Loved every minute and used 12.5 KG were possible and 10 Kg for the raises etc. Super Workout Caroline really can't believe there are just two EPIC days left but so thankful for the back catalogue of amazing workout who have created for us all.

    Too many knee surgeries, too little rehab, and just good ole aging over the years have wasted away my hamstrings. Even though I have been lifting heavier weights over this series, it has only been during the past three weeks where my hamstrings have finally been engaging and firing during the glute bridge! It's amazing how our bodies can compensate, and then, regenerate. Feeling fit and motivated to finish this series. Thank you!

    As I get closer to be doing with this first Epic program I’m super stoked to see #2! At 47 I don’t think I’ve ever been this physically strong! I have a goal for my 48th birthday in June and by doing these workouts I feel I’m going to meet it! Thank you for all you do!!

    I really loved this one today ❤️
    My arm's were shaking by the end, could feel the burn 🔥..
    I used my 2x 10kg all the way through so feeling on top of the world now as I didn't think I'd last with that weight as my upper strength is my weakness,
    Really enjoyed the format today
    I then did another quick arm workout of yours then your new 15 minutes abs, so I'm well and truly dead now
    😂
    Cannot believe we just done day 48 and that we only have two workouts left with you on this Epic journey

    I was nearly in tears of exhaustion/frustration in the dip burnout at the end! I love the burn I feel when I am done, but man some days it takes everything in me to keep going! This was tough for sure! I think the most challenging for me today was the pike pushups on the chair. One thing I have to say is that when you are using different size weights it isn’t always easy to tell when you switch and that can be confusing on my end. Thank you for the killer workout!
