No one is immune to anxiety, not even Navy SEALS. Jocko Willink spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams, and he served in one of the most highly decorated special operations units of the Iraq war - and he has experienced fear throughout his career.
Along the way, he's learned how to deal with it.
"The first thing you've got to realize is that most of the fear that you have isn't reality," says the former SEAL, who is now an author and leadership coach. "It's just built up in your head."
The best way to get over any fear is to face it with confidence, he tells CNBC Make It: "Go and look at it. Go on the attack. Move towards it."
As tempting as it may be to avoid or suppress fear, that will only exacerbate it, Willink says: "The more you hide from it, the bigger it gets. The scarier it gets. Don't allow that to happen - instead, confront it, face it and get after it."
Willink gives the example of jumping out of an airplane, which he had to do in SEALs training: "The first time you ever jump out of an airplane, it's a very unnatural thing to do, and if you have any sense of self-preservation, you're going to look at the open door of a moving aircraft that's at 1,200 feet above the ground and you're going to think to yourself, 'This doesn't seem like a good idea.'"
But, "if you sit there and think about all the things that could go wrong, that fear is going to grow and grow and grow."
Whether you're about to jump out of a plane or face any other fear, such as speaking in public for the first time, don't back away or delay the task at hand, says Willink.
"When you start to feel yourself lock up, recognize that you're being paralyzed, and take that first step forward," he says. "That first step is the hardest part. Once you take that step towards what you're afraid of, you're going to move forward and things are going to be OK."
Self-made billionaire Warren Buffett, who overcame an intense fear of public speaking, agrees. "Address whatever you feel your weaknesses are, and do it now," he wrote for Forbes. "Whatever you want to learn more, start doing it today."
As Willink puts it: "Don't hesitate. Go."

Ex-Navy SEAL: This is the first step to take to conquer your greatest fears | CNBC Make It. - บันเทิง
You fear because you live in "Your Mind", there is no fear in "Reality".
You don't know how powerful your written quote is. Or perhaps you know, most of the viewers just don't know it yet.
I love❤️ your quote.
🤜💥🤛💯🤗
Very powerful quote, thank you!
It’s in probability
Step towards the fear. Do not hide from it. Hesitation leads to stagnation.
Can I get that on a poster holy crap
THIS MOTIVATED ME, THANK YOU
I'm scared of frogs I can't even approach them it's just an emotional reaction

We must face our fears head on to overcome them 👍🏾
So if we are afraid of tanks we should face it head on. Gotcha

"Go and face it". A simple but fundamental piece of advice. Thank you from a former Italian Alpino 🇮🇹 !
First (and only) time I skydived, I remember a vague but controllable sense of uneasiness as we loaded our gear and boarded the plane. Airborne, we got to jump altitude (3k feet). Then the door opened, and the view of the ground coupled with the loud rush of air hitting us in the plane and my knees got weak ("wait a minute, what am I about to do?"). Instinctively I knew I had to shut off that voice IMMEDIATELY. I did this by focusing on my next breath, my next footfall, my next hand hold, and just listening to the instructor. When it was my turn, I was only hearing his voice (yelling to make himself heard over the airstream) and I'll never forget it: "CHECK YOUR CONNECTION (we were on static line). GET IN THE DOORWAY. GET OUT ON THE STRUT. ARE YOU READY!? LOOK AT ME! GOOOOOOO!"
Later on the ground, I asked him if anyone had ever refused to jump. Laughing (but serious) he said, "No. There are six of us crowded onto a small, single-engine plane, and there's no room. If you refuse to jump, the people behind you won't be able to accomodate you moving off the strut and back into the plane. If I have to, I'll reach out and knock your hands off the strut, so you're going anyway!"
Yes, face the fear like Jocko says, but just as important is shutting down that voice IMMEDIATELY, like within a second---two, max.

This is true. This man has the a answer in 2 minutes. If you really know something, you know you can give a straight answer. Most other videos in YT on the topic are quite long.
If you have your fear, you'll come out less afraid of it. It is the only way.
I will try the advice right now! I thank you for the useful and superb video.! Have a fearless day, everybody!
How to overcome fear? It’s simple. When the fear comes, over come it. - Jocko
Jocko doesnt overcome fear.
Fear must overcome Jocko
I remember when I was in the Marines. We were training to repel down a helicopter. I was number 19 out of 20. I psyched myself up so much. I went to the front of the line. My attitude was. Let's do this. Let's get it over with.
Thank you Joko
Once you overcome fear it gives you confidence rather than let it rule your life
I’m getting into surfing bigger waves and my goal is to become professional at it. This video pertains to one aspect of doing that mentally
Such good advice. "Fear is the mind killer."
Dude, thank you for the video I think you give him pre-solid advice people face this every day weather in the military or not.
Good advice 👍 well done man thanks for your great words
A very good advice,
Brilliant thanks to you man
Thanks
I can't even jump out of a plane in VR! lmao
One thing I wished he mention was "Learning to crawl before you can walk, learning to walk before you can jog"
If the fear is too much (like social anxiety) then start with baby steps... just call a store to ask for their hours or something... then work your way up from that!
THIS!!!!!!!!!!
Thank u
Get some!!!
what a man
Wow great advice
Thanx for this most videos tell me fear is in my head but I gotta do something scary and I got no choice so I like wot u say thanx
"I'm gonna walk towards that door, I'm gonna step out of it, and I'm gonna get some:. Thanks Joco. It was the "I'm gonna get some" that did it for me and also I mentally saw "fear" at my back not in front. Life exhilaration possibilities was at my front! Yes, I can do this.
Amazing comments, fears natural part of life.
thank you
Don't be afraid to pray an act of perfect contrition everyday
My younger brother is in the Army and has done training for jumping out of a flying airplane. I’m like bro, you awesome, but you crazy. Some people are just built different.
Oh that's so cool!
Thank you. I tried and it sent me back hiding. I am too sick and too traumatized to even face fear. I am no Navy SEAL. I am sick in bed and have no strength or health left. No where to go. Nothing to say. Stockholm "Stalking-home" Syndrome. Straight up. Don't wanna go anywhere but to the doctors and family. I want to live.
I feel the same way brother at 40 years old with little strength and poor health but I am seeking help from the lord to help me gain what I lost and overcome every obstacle.
@@ysierra1724 I agree.

Omg I watched a ton of military edits before this but this is the one that makes me say: Ok, this is it
Jocko doesn't overcome fear. When fear sees him, it overcomes itself.
One of my students told me that when he discussed his anxieties with someone close to him, like his wife or a close friend, then he found that the moment he started opening up to them, the anxiety decreased-even before he received any advice or support.
Togetherness definitely decreases anxiety. There is a saying in the wisdom of Kabbalah that “a sorrow shared is a sorrow halved,” i.e. when we share a sensation, we divide it up, and in turn it becomes more manageable.
Since it is quite easy to see how sharing our experiences lessens our negative feelings, the question is why do we not use this ability more? Why is it so hard for us to share our fears and anxieties with others?
We are indeed afraid of opening our hearts, letting everyone see that we have certain fears and anxieties. That is, in addition to whatever fears and anxieties we hold within, we usually have additional anxieties about sharing them with others, that it might cause others to perceive us as weak. Since society in general values stronger, smarter, wealthier and fitter individuals, opening up our anxieties to such a society makes us vulnerable to exploitation. We thus need to seek a social environment that would not exploit us for opening up, but would rather give us a sense of faith and confidence that it can help us cope with any negative feelings.
A social setting that can guarantee faith and confidence in its members is one that actively draws itself to the upper good and benevolent force-the force of love, bestowal and connection. It is this very same force that awakens negative feelings in us, whether they be fears, anxieties or several other painful sensations, in order for us to draw closer to that force, and we do so by drawing closer to each other.
If we wish to connect with the upper force and let its perfect quality of love, bestowal and connection fill our lives with a sensation of faith and confidence, then we need to emulate such a quality toward other people-giving them a sense of faith and confidence, and for them to do the same toward us. By wanting to positively connect with others, we then start awakening the positive force dwelling in nature into the connections we create, and we then feel a new sense of faith and confidence wash away any anxieties that we might be holding within.
Did this once when I thought my stalker came for me and opened my door. First I shrieked and when I was still alive I ran for the door to start beating him up and he wasn’t there hahaha. Now I realize I froze in fear first and was shocked that I did that badly
Fear is not actually scary,it is your imagination of fear, that’s the real deal.
Jocko Willink truly has wisdom. This was simple but accurate and effective. Take action towards fear. Confront fear. Don't live in your mind. Live in reality.
But that is not an excuse to not use your brain. Fear has value. When you are doing deep thinking, fear opens up all possible ways something could go wrong. If you are working to design a power plant, ignoring fear would be unwise. This particular situation is when quick action is needed. But otherwise do listen to your fear. If it was unnecessary, nature wouldn't give it.
I trained prison guards with this philosophy for years.
Later in their careers they thanked me.
Its true you know
❤” GET SOME “
Please come help us in the cities that have been traumatized and are terrified. I tried confronting it and it got me hurt and even more scared. Bring in the military. Please
Life is just a matter of do or die. Just do it.
My biggest fear right now is exactly that, the freaking parachuting course terrifies me, but at some point I'll have to do it so I need to deal with this fear. It's hard but not impossible.
may be too late but ask someone to give you a push lol

You can do it man, just keep focusing and go in your own pace :)
Our deepest fear is death, but knowing where we are heading is the key (John 3:16).
What about feeling the fear?
how do you overcome your fear when it is anxiety
I’m gonna walk towards that door, I’m gonna step out of it, and I’m gonna get some.
(FACTS OVA FEELINGS). If Eu Want Satisfaction and If Eu Want Success Rather Than to Try to Avoid Consequences Eu Need to Consciously Choose Them Instead
Went skydiving today and I’m actually more scared now… trying to find ways to get over this fear for the next one which won’t be tandem. Lord help me! 😂
This is the same as recommending everyone 9.5 pair of shoes. Other reasons:
1. Lack of vitamins - check them
2. Lack of hormones - check them
3. Lack of knowledge - get some (in this case, yeah, go attack)
4. Psychological disorders - get some counselling
And there’re different types of fears and some are pretty close to being not ‘overcomeable’.
Spot on

We are looking for fearless in fight !!!
Yup. He is asking you to find the nearest door and scoot off. Simples.
I used to have an unnatural fear of snakes I had a dream that was unreal the best way to overcome any fear is know to tell yourself this is a life is truly a test/put yourself in the passenger seat and let god take control, fear is a demon that only has power because we give him it freely when u face your fears you will feel a huge burst of energy you gain back
Just tell your fear to someone, most of the time it sounds stupid when you way it out loud, and the fear loses its power
🙏
The obstacle is the way 👿

Loves from Nigeria thank you this really helped me out

With determination, fears allayed,

🌟 Through difficulty, importance known,
💪 Discomfort faced, persisting on.

Even if your scared do it still
I get so scared with thing to do with fear, like doesn’t something that might get me hurt, but I’m actualy not scared about what will happen I just can’t bring myself to do it

Facing your fears may work for many, but I prefer do a 180 degree turn and go in the opposite direction away from what I fear. Hence why I no longer fly, refuse to have injections and always decline invites to social events (including my son's wedding).

The deer from The 100 is a fear so bad that I am scared of deers. I’m about to look at the image, wish me luck.

Good luck, I almost died once because I argued with Gravity for too long. (Well I thought I was right). Realized it was a losing argument.🗝️🌠🤟 Nanoo- Nanoo..

I am Afraid of but I am not a soldier
My plane experience I just trusted the guy with me and I was okay I also jumped first
Hi everyone I have a fear
Of chimps can you guys put out tips
Only way to overcome chimphobia is become king chimp
What happens once you jump out and you just faint? Because some people they fear too much they just Faint. Not a good idea too.
Well I’d assume everyone can guess the outcome to that atleast they would be saved from the majority of the fear and subsequent expiration of the fall
I am so scared of bugs like bees, wasps , hornets and roaches. Those are my only fears but the roach one is the most paralyzing fear I have. I can’t go to sleep well if I see a roach that night
thats me with mice, and my house is full of them 😭
Do it afraid
Just step out. Don’t even think about it. The thing you need to remember is don’t pull the cord to soon , get use to reaching for it with ease and enjoy the journey. Landing can be a little awkward at first and learning how to roll but you get used to that in no time. You haven’t lived until you sky dive. You will learn to love it so much that you can’t wait to leap out of the plane, the endorphin rush is out of this world.

I’m gonna walk towards that door, I’m gonna step out of it, and I’m gonna get some. LFG.
I have a fear that people will resort to violence in an argument. So to protect myself I never say anything that might anger someone but that doesn’t stop other people in continue to disregard or disrespect me. I can always take a stand for myself but what if the person resort to violence? I don’t have a strong build and I’m short & petite
Nike
Doing presentation is my worst fear
Then go get some.
I'd pass out and not Pull my parachute lol
Basically, fear is the negative ideas of what could happen in your mind. If you can control those thoughts and trust yourself then you won't be afraid.
thanks for this comment. I'm gonna start using that technique anytime I'm in a situation that triggers fear.

I just wanna go to the kitchen at night without having to run after turning the lights back off 😭
This guy looks like f22 with those eyes😂
I thought they push you out the plane if you freeze up at the door?
I believe he meant 12,000 feet, not 1,200 feet. Either is potentially fatal but 1,200 feet hardly give you time for your chute to open.
Fear is a raging tiger running towards you, become an elephant my friend
I was afraid and scared because people were rude to me after a nasty break up. I literally stopped smiling at people, cut people odd. Yes the Seal is right, but I'd rather jump out a plane 12000 feet up than talk to hypercritical, rude, mainly aggressive ghetto people again! I don't have the strength right now to keep battling and batting away rude, nasty idiots! I learnt just to nod and get away from idiots, especially if they try to flirt. Leave me alone! Tired of facetious, entitled, rude people. No, don't tell someone like me to face my fear! I did that, faced my fears of rude nasty people and got mentally terrorised! I'm taking each day at a time! UK 🇬🇧
For you, facing your fear means having the courage to make a decision that you do not need those nasty people to feel happy or complete. The aircraft door in your case is the door that takes you away from those who terrorise you. So you had to make the jump, i.e. take the sudden decision to cut ties from those people and situations that you had gotten comfortable with and not look back. It must have been scary, but seems like you DID face your fear. Congratulations.
1,200 ft is a bit “shallow” for a jump...jus’ saying.
Hooooah
The moment that parachute don't work will a person realize no matter how many successful jumps its still a dumb idea 😂
12,000 feet.
