    My friend worked at a concert venue for about 20 years. She said the very best, nicest celeb that came through was Huey Lewis. Not only one of our greatest performers, but a truly lovely person. Threw a party for the staff ... the STAFF --- ushers, etc. And thank you, for this song, which epitomizes the Vietnam vets and all those before and after. RIP Sgt. John Hipson USMC We love you, man! xx from Canada
    PS. loving that Canadian drum kick. :))

    I'm a combat veteran.I was trained by the Vietnam vets and fought with them in combat. Every time I hear this song I think of them. The unsung of us. I'm alive today because of them. I have a family now and have lived my life as I promised God. I bought a small piece of property and have lived my days in peace. To my Brothers of the Vietnam WAR . " You are not forgotten and I we will always remember " !

    I wish I heard this on the radio on the FM in Denver, CO. For some reason, most stations don't play this song EVER. This is one of his best songs.

    • @dogbarbill
      @dogbarbill 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The reason it doesn't get radio airplay is because it wasn't a top 40 hit; it peaked at only #18 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. I know--that sucks.

    • @dogbarbill
      @dogbarbill 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@christosstamato527 No, you're correct, but tunes generally have to get into the top 10 to get heavy rotation air play.

    Growing up it was expected to love "Sports". Huey Lewis was a favorite of my parents (especially my Dad). Back to the Future came next and The News became etched into my head as a fun band that had a big part in singing the soundtrack of my child hood. I graduated College in 2003, enlisted in 2005 and it wasn't until 2016 that just by chance I actually listened to the lyrics of this song and it evoked emotions that led to tears. After 2 deployments in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan, there were times that I wondered if this band could be more awesome. Yes they could. I had no idea that they wrote this as a tribute to Vietnam veterans and rightly so. However, there is a new generation that needs songs like this that seem somehow to understand what so many have been through. BTW, I was "frontline" a lot of the time and when I introduced this to my platoon it became a comforting anthem somehow. Will the band ever know? Probably not, but I still love this song and they unknowingly have reached out to many young men and gave them something to stand behind when the deployments went long, and sometimes your moral compass gets a little foggy. I have seen interviews with Huey and he is so humble he would probably just shrug it off and say that he wanted to reach people. Well, guess what? You did, and you made a lot of guys a little bit better for maybe 5 mins but guys cherish those 5 mins. This is a great American band......Oh, and they also played a couple of other songs.....

      Also let me say this song while representing veterans from different generations has a sound that guys would literally get pumped up behind. If America could put the awkward "thank you for you service" into a song, this would be it. This isn't a victim song, it celebrates guys that did their duty and served with their brothers proudly while also effecting the battle space. Salute to all veterans. Some wounds are deep but this current generation has voluntarily sought out evil and prosecuted. The magic with this song is it captures the surreal nature that Vets come across now more than ever. Ambush one day, "check out line" 2 days later.

    With so many stories of tragedies involving vets with PTSD these days, this is an important song to consider. And remember: Huey brought this song out in 1983 or '84 -- he "called it" a long time ago.

    *Instrumentally, such a gloriously optimistic sounding song..., and yet, such a depressingly dark message lyrically..., concerning the daily struggle and anguish of living with P.T.S.D., while amongst the rest of society that has only known a sheltered and safe existence, and so have absolutely no clue about the hell that you've been through, and will be forever trapped in..., until the day you pass...* 😕

    Wow. I remember hearing this song when it first came out -- either 1986 or 1987, I believe -- and it had a good "sound" to it. What is it that they call it -- a steady "four-on-the-floor" beat? But those were the days when you couldn't just look up the song lyrics on the Internet, so you would listen to songs and you would have no clue what the songs were about. I just figured this was just another Huey Lewis "relationship" song. "Don't you know me? I'm the boy next door ... Is that what I was fightin' for?" And you still thought it was a "relationship" thing -- not Vietnam. But now you read the lyrics on the Internet, and it's quite a different story. With this track, Huey Lewis & The News sort of went beyond "entertainment" and started making "social comment".
