A twelve year old boy was playing this outside Newcastle United’s football ground just over a week ago, Mark Knopfler saw a video of the lad and sent him a signed vinyl copy of the song wishing him all the best and told him to keep at it. What a down to earth legend.

This version is astounding... Mark is arguably one of the greatest guitarist that ever lived. He honored every musician playing with him with just a glance and a smiled reply. He and Brian May might just be the two most humble guitarists ever. What class!
I love how he turns his back on the audience & acknowledges the musicians to show his appreciation. Seen Dire Straits twice & Mark twice & he never fails to say thank you. The man doesn’t possess an ego despite being a genius. 🎸
It cant be an overstatment that MK is this eras Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss any one of the classic music writers or a few of them wrapped up in one genius...this has to be one of the most memorable pieces of music of all time...and MK just plays like its a jam session...
How absolutely on the dot you are ! I watched this about a million times and 3 things are burnt into my mind during this masterpiece : 1) The lead violin...her gentle smile at 2:05. 2) At the end ....freeze at 4:47 and 4:48 and see the adulation on the cellist's face as she looks at Mark plucking the final flamboyant D note on the top E string ....and 3 ) The quiet smile between Mark and the drums says it all.... Incomparable genius !!!

Many years ago, in the distant days of Blockbuster, I rented "Local Hero" to watch with my mother. She was dying, a long and terrible death. I'd seen the movie before, remembered it fondly, and figured it could lift both our moods. It succeeded beyond anything I'd hoped. At the end, we both were crying while smiling as Knopfler played this tune into the credits. My mother and I hardly ever agreed on anything -- taste, politics, life choices -- but we agreed the movie was wonderful, magical, enchanting. She died a few weeks later. I tried watching the movie again some years ago, but it just didn't feel right. I couldn't make it to the ending. But I listen to the "Going Home" theme fairly often. It always brings a smile to my face. And some tears.

I'm still so touched by this song, man I love the versions on A Night In London. Probably Knopfler is going to remain my favourite guitarist of all time. Played this song at my grandfather's funeral on my new Strat which my friends had gotten me for my 30th birthday. And I love how it makes people feel genuine emotion, just look at all the people here in the comments talk about their loved ones. What a legend.
So wonderful to see all the moving comments on here about MK and this song. It never fails to raise goosebumps on me, just like the final scene of Local Hero while it's playing. Have seen Mark many times over the years, both Dire Straits and solo, so grateful he always finishes with this tune. And now with the fantastic Guitar Gods charity song and video he's raised it another notch for a wonderful cause. I sincerely hope he's not done touring, even if on a more limited basis. Favorite artist of my past fifty+ years.
Local Hero had such an impact on me as a child, and this tune tugs at my heart strings every time I hear it. At the time, I didn’t realise exactly how big an impact it had had; but, looking back, and having moved from England to now be living a couple of villages away from Pennan (where the village scenes were filmed), it’s crystal clear - Local Hero changed my life! ❤️
Is there anyone better than Mark? Of all the greats who have made us smile over the years, I think Mark is number 1. Not just a local hero, mate, worldwide and epic. Thank you Mark and to all the guys. D
I'm a big fan of Mark and his wonderful compositions, but technically there are better. Joscho Stephan is currently probably the best guitarist in the world. Check it out on TH-cam ;-)
I really like how Mark is looking at the band and smiling - like it's not about putting on a show to impress people but simply about playing music even if there was an audience there or not.
Watching this in 2022...amazing piece. The audience just chilled. No camera phones no social media look at me no validation needed just pure. Miss it. Thank you Mark Knoffler.
HE has something in his soul and dominates everyone with no intention of... it seems that when he was born he was touched by the magic wand of an enchanted fairy and... everything Mark touches turns into music ...i love him!!🎶🎸🎷🧚♀️
Mark Knopfler Thank you for your Going Home piece, l absolutely love it, and there is something Very special about it, Like a gift from above to your soul through your fingers, and each time I hear Going Home my eyes fill with tears. It is Gorgeous, and the first piece I practiced playing to get my fingers working again after my hands were injured, I got singed quite a bit. God bless you Mark. Keep playing and smiling. All of the Very very Best to you. JB. East Surrey. UK.
MK is just a genuine guy. Unlike most people who become super rock stars, MK didn't change to live the part. He is much more comfortable here with a small audience being himself than he ever was at the height of Dire Straits success.
I find all Marks music very emotional now in later years, they just remind me of something, or someone or even sometime from the past. Just like this one does, I am now sat up on my couch at 06.30am with a cup of tea with my ear buds in while my wife is still sound asleep, tear in my eye enjoying the past. Beautiful.
One of the greatest songwriters and performers of our age. His music is timeless, I think, and maybe I’m wrong, but will be listened to in 100 years and be hailed as great classical music.
I've always liked Dire Straits, never been a massive fan. Though, I do have Brothers in Arms on vinyl. Yes bought in the 80's. I've also had a guitar since the mid 80's but never took it seriously. Now I'm retired I decided to get the old acoustic out of mothballs. lo and behold it still sounds tuneful. But I was still pretty crap at it. Only the odd riff. But at the start of the pandemic I set myself a goal, (as I wasn't going to spend much of my retirement out and about}, to learn to play properly. So I bought some kindle books on chords and other guitar magic and set about my task. Whilst checking out the guitar teachers on TH-cam ( which may I say has helped tremendously ) I came across this video of Mark Live in London playing Going Home. That was it I was hooked. I can play it pretty much all the way through now, with the occasional (fingers crossed) incorrect note. At the beginning of the pandemic I set my target and my reward would be a new guitar, as the old one I've had since the 80's which was given to me by a neighbour. That new guitar is now wrapped up under the xmas tree and I can't wait to break it out and practice Going Home on it. So thank you Mark Knopfler for giving me the inspiration to keep going though out this dreadful year. A merry Christmas to everyone and hopefully a better new year.
Can't tell you how much reading this comment has made me smile. I set myself the same challenge! 2 months on, how is the new guitar working out for you?
Great read Dave. A few years ago I was delving around in TH-cam looking for a song. I stumbled across a Mark Knopfler interview where he spoke about his guitars and how hard it is to be a good guitarist. From that moment I bought a guitar and started the long road to being competent. I go back to that interview quite regularly as it reminds me about where it all started, for me🎸
He was one of my favorites when I was young, leading the band Dyer Streets with Mark Knopler. Now, after several decades, this multi-atmospheric recording of theirs affects me again with the power of novelty. Thank you very much.
Notice the passion of music-making on the musicians' faces. Concentration, calmness, exchange of glances, gentle smiles. Everything works like a Swiss watch. And finally, real applause for them, for a real, beautiful song...
Every time I come back to this performance I'm reminded why this is one of my absolute favourite pieces of music. I don't listen to it often, but this is the only piece that makes me feel the need to stop everything I'm doing and give it all my attention, every single time. There's just nothing like it.
I absolutely love the connection with the audience, his fellow musicians, & at the same time total concentration on bringing his guitar to life. Mark you are the best.
I love the way he interacted with the other musicians!...He spent most of the time with his back to the audience....He is my favorite guitarist and plays some of the most romantic music!...
I've listened to 1000's of hours and seen him live three times...in all of those performances I've not heard him fluff a single note...the man is not of this Earth.
When I was young in the Navy in the early 80s we were at sea and on repeat was Dire Straits on the ship radio. At the time I thought ‘not again’ but when you have been through various conflicts over the years, songs resonate. I was always happy to be going home to see my folks and ‘come back to earth.’ Songs like this and ‘Brothers in arms’ represent that era and are emotional for some of us.
Mark is the most humblest man I've ever seen or her perform and yet you don't even acknowledge yourself with the song beautiful inside and out your music touches my heart and I know that God has blessed you 100% 70 * 7
Knopfi my guitar hero deep in my heart! 😍🎸 It is an honor for every musician to be able to stand with him on stage. The way Mark smiles at the drummer is just super cute! ☺
Just amazing, and I am not a Newcastle Fan! Saw Dire Straits in a pub in London before Sultans of Swing was even released. Lucky to see them twice more!
I've just noticed how much his bass player looks like the bass player from dire straits. lol. I wonder if he was looking for a lookalike. He's the spitting image. lol.
Fantastic! I really enjoyed this. The string 4tet works brilliantly on this. These 'chamber' style performances, for the smaller theatres are pure gold. 🌟👍❤️🎶
This is a truly beautiful video. You can see the connection, they all know they're making something special - everybody's in the pocket, five by five. Would have loved to have been in the audience that night, it must really have been something.

A great tune by a fellow Geordie. There is nothing more powerful than hearing this as our local football team Newcastle United step out onto the pitch at St James Park in front of 50,000 roaring fans. Local Hero indeded!
This was one of my father's favourite pieces of music. It was the last thing we played at his funeral - both a farewell and a celebration. It still gives me chills.
He makes his mastery look easy; that is part of his genius. His music has been striking chords in my heart since I first heard him in 1983. As long as he is playing, I'll keep listening. Blessings to all in 2023.
Ive loved Dire Straits since the beginning..30 years ago I lost my wallet on a day trip at Blackpool..a load of Geordies payed for my beer all night.good beer and good music.. thanks to both of you..❤️

When Goodwood and the racing community celebrated the life of Sir Stirling Moss they had Jackie Stewart take a lap in one of Moss' cars and had Mark Knopfler play this song. VERY emotional.

HE has something in his soul and dominates everyone with no intention of... it seems that when he was born he was touched by the magic wand of an enchanted fairy and... everything Mark touches turns into music ...i love him!!🎶🎸🎷🧚♀️
Mark Knopfler Thank you for your Going Home piece, l absolutely love it, and there is something Very special about it,
Like a gift from above to your soul through your fingers, and each time I hear Going Home my eyes fill with tears. It is Gorgeous, and the first piece I practiced playing to get my fingers working again after my hands were injured, I got singed
quite a bit. God bless you Mark.
Keep playing and smiling.
All of the Very very Best to you.

MK is just a genuine guy. Unlike most people who become super rock stars, MK didn't change to live the part. He is much more comfortable here with a small audience being himself than he ever was at the height of Dire Straits success.
I totally believe that about MK. He is such a superstar and yet such a normal human being. xxx
Ein Geschenk an die Menschheit! Ein Kulturdenkmal!
This man vibrates on pure love ♥️ the world is lucky to have you 🫶🎸
I find all Marks music very emotional now in later years, they just remind me of something, or someone or even sometime from the past. Just like this one does, I am now sat up on my couch at 06.30am with a cup of tea with my ear buds in while my wife is still sound asleep, tear in my eye enjoying the past. Beautiful.
Got that right!!!!!!
Aye
Mark and his guitar are one. Its an extension of his mind and body.
I could listen to Mark for hours. He is one of my favourite guitarplayers.
What must it be like? To have people just stood there in awe of your God given ability
I always get a lump in my throat when I listen to this song it's Brilliant thx MK
Just wish I could put many a more likes on this absolute classic.
For you too Sir ;-) What a nice story :-)
Me has emocionado. Long live 🙏
What an amazing song sung superbly
Notice the passion of music-making on the musicians' faces. Concentration, calmness, exchange of glances, gentle smiles. Everything works like a Swiss watch. And finally, real applause for them, for a real, beautiful song...
Every time I come back to this performance I'm reminded why this is one of my absolute favourite pieces of music. I don't listen to it often, but this is the only piece that makes me feel the need to stop everything I'm doing and give it all my attention, every single time. There's just nothing like it.
I have listened to this version many times and today just realized that the music is flowing from Mark's guitar like liquid gold. It is so good.
A lot of smiles being exchanged between the musicians on stage, lovely to see that they're enjoying playing together so much!
I absolutely love the connection with the audience, his fellow musicians, & at the same time total concentration on bringing his guitar to life. Mark you are the best.
Pas mieux que ce morceau❤❤❤
Pretty much the same with me. Although I was in the Merchant navy this was blasting out of most of the cabins on the Oriana in the early 80s
One of the finest pieces of music ever written....
Such a complete talent. We have been privileged to be graced with Mark’s talent. A huge thank tge great Mark Knopfler. I bow to you sir.
I just can't get enough of his music. It's like meditation to me, healing in a way.
5 minutes of brilliance.
Just amazing, and I am not a Newcastle Fan! Saw Dire Straits in a pub in London before Sultans of Swing was even released. Lucky to see them twice more!
Must have watched this hundreds of times ,it doesn't age .
you can tell the drummer is well happy and him and mark when they look st each other and think...'yeah man, this is good "..👌❤

I've just noticed how much his bass player looks like the bass player from dire straits. lol. I wonder if he was looking for a lookalike. He's the spitting image. lol.
@@tomwest1014 are you kidding?
Fantastic! I really enjoyed this. The string 4tet works brilliantly on this. These 'chamber' style performances, for the smaller theatres are pure gold. 🌟👍❤️🎶
MK is simply the master of masters. He flies so high above the clouds, he is otherworldly to me. What a gift from the Gods.
Playing this song is truly touching and moving. Love watching his facial expression. He really knows how to touch your soul. What a masterpiece.
This is a truly beautiful video. You can see the connection, they all know they're making something special - everybody's in the pocket, five by five. Would have loved to have been in the audience that night, it must really have been something.
@@AbsentWithoutLeaving I CERTAINLY agree 👍 with 🥰 you. The orchestra was amazing 👏 especially the 🎻 violinist and Mark was absolutely 💯 👌 unique and very humble. He enjoys playing ▶️ his guitar 🎸 and music 🎶 if there's a audience or not. Thanks again and have a great 👍 weekend and good 👍 night 🌙 ✨ 😘 💕 sleep 😴 💤 well see 👀 ya my friend 😀
Is no one going to mention the mastery of the drummer on this one? That man did a magnificent job.
That's Chad Cromwell on the drums and Guy Fletcher on the keyboard!
My thoughts also, excellent drumming which adds to the overall listening.
All I can say is that he's truly the Best guitarist ever. Soft soothing very relaxed. Love the way he interacts with the band his expression around touching the heart.thank you.
Thank you so much. MARK IS TOTALLY BREATH TAKING SOFTLY SPOKEN FOCUSED COMMITTED PASSIONATE SENTIMENTAL EXTREMELY HUMBLE SO SOOTHING TO LISTEN TO. HAVE A GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE 👍👍
A great tune by a fellow Geordie. There is nothing more powerful than hearing this as our local football team Newcastle United step out onto the pitch at St James Park in front of 50,000 roaring fans. Local Hero indeded!
Your team is flying now - best of luck from City fan
This was one of my father's favourite pieces of music. It was the last thing we played at his funeral - both a farewell and a celebration. It still gives me chills.
We also played this piece of music at my Mother's funeral. A fitting tribute to her life of 96 years.
Jackie Beals it will be my last song in my funeral as well
He makes his mastery look easy; that is part of his genius. His music has been striking chords in my heart since I first heard him in 1983. As long as he is playing, I'll keep listening. Blessings to all in 2023.
Ive loved Dire Straits since the beginning..30 years ago I lost my wallet on a day trip at Blackpool..a load of Geordies payed for my beer all night.good beer and good music.. thanks to both of you..❤️
Byłem na trzech koncertach Mark Knopfler w Polska, każdy kończył się tym wspaniałym utworem.
Mark Knopfler, arguably the best guitarist i've ever heard...
Andres Segovia, Francisco Montoya, Christopher Parkening,...? I like Knopfler but I am sure he would agree is building on the shoulders of giants.
Mark Knopfler est dans les 15 meilleurs guitariste au monde @@josephnoneofyourbeeswax8517
@@josephnoneofyourbeeswax8517Mark himself said in a documentary once that he wasn’t a great guitarist
@@annjarvis2437he’s just so damn humble, he would never toot his own horn
He deserves admiration from the onlookers. Greatest musician in the world ever.
Certainly in the top ten I would say . Mark and Lyndsey Buckingham are two of the most underrated guitarists ever !!
I have been consistently listening to this jewel from my early 20's to now in late 50's. Thank you to accompany me ups and downs & highs and lows.
La sento e la risento . Bellisssima , grande knofer il migliore😊
This piece by Mark moved me so much as a teenager and has since inspired me to learn guitar and to this day I continue to learn this beautiful instrument....Thank you so much Mark for your beautiful music to this world and inspiring generation of musicians and artist....🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️♥️Love from Bhutan..
Love the way Mk says do your worst. Another term for excellence. His facial expression tells the story of uncanny emotion and depth. Soothing relaxed and so smooth. Great job Mk.
THANK YOU SO MUCH 💓 HIS FACIAL EXPRESSION JUST TOUCHES MY HEART, SO EXTREMELY PASSIONATE AND EMOTIONAL ABOUT HIS MUSIC,CERTAINLY KNOWS HOW TO EXPRESS HIMSELF. HE DIFFENTLY STOLED MY HEART
When Goodwood and the racing community celebrated the life of Sir Stirling Moss they had Jackie Stewart take a lap in one of Moss' cars and had Mark Knopfler play this song. VERY emotional.
There's that many goosebumps in my this room, it's going to last me a good few thanksgivings but it's not the guitar you'll hear cry and definitely not sing.
Nark knopfler is the ultimate soft fingered guitar player ever genius is is a perfect word.❤👌🏻👍🤘👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Knopfler is not only one of the greatest guitarists of all time
He’s also an amazing song writer. This movie, my all time favorite “The Princess Bride” and many many more.
I love this song. And I love watching the video; the way he looks at the band. He looks like he's just enjoying the moment and wants to make sure the rest of the band is doing the same. Just right in that moment.
Hi Meg
Not enough can be said about how great a song this is and the emotion it draws from within. All I can say is thank you.
My dad absolutely loved this song and when he died on May 7th we played this as the walk out song at the end of his funeral.
This one's for you, love you dad and I'll see you soon ❤💔💖
This was played at the end of my uncles' funeral. Such an apt song
@@katherinebellinger594 yes it's such a beautiful piece of music that we first heard in a film called Local Hero and also got us into dire straights .
When I go that's what I want
Happy musicians together making fantastic sounds of joy and harmony
