  • The rotary engine is back in the game! And this time it's revolutionised the Mazda MX-30 into the MX-30 R-EV.
The MX-30 was first released in 2020 and let's say it's not the greatest success story on the market. It looks good, handles well, but the range wasn't so practical. Now Mazda have taken the MX-30 and given it a huge upgrade by making it into a plug-in hybrid which utilises a rotary engine allowing you to travel over 400 miles with 53 miles of pure electrical driving.
Saying that though, the MX-30 R-EV drives purely off electricity, but how is that possible?
Well the way the hybrid system works uses the rotary engine to charge the electric motor meaning all four wheels drive off pure electricity.

People should see this as a 4-door coupe, because that's what it is since these days everything is an SUV and people get confused with things, particularly in what concerns practicality. I love the design though and could live with it, just not sure about range and convenience in that sense.

This interesting and unusual Range Extender EV is designed primarily to be charged at home overnight and used for your daily commute - assuming your daily commute is no more than approximately 30 miles round trip. That Wankel Rotary Generator is the icing on the cake. For those days when you run out of charge, the Wankel powered Generator will get you to your long distance destination or arguably to an EV Charger.
This is not like your Prius PHEV, which will still give you sterling MPG after the EV traction battery is depleted - the Prius PHEV then turns into an ordinary Prius Hybrid and you’re still guaranteed 60mpg or higher - though I hear you’ll get less is you use the Prius PHEV to recharge the EV battery while you drive - it is apparently capable of this too - but I don’t know what the MPG would be under those circumstances.
The Mazda MX-30 R-EV is a different story; you’ll want to rely primarily on regular home / work charging.
This is not a vehicle for a person who does long distance commutes or regular long journeys.
This vehicle has to fit within your lifestyle if you are ever considering getting it.
This is great for the person who commutes to work daily and goes home - Monday to Friday.
On weekends, you can utilise the Wankel range extender to go much longer distances, relying on the 50 litre fuel tank (a Prius has a 45 litre tank) to take you over 300 miles at a stretch for your social activities.
This car is always propelled directly by electric motors and electricity from the battery - even when the Rotary Range Extender is running. The inclusion of the modes of vehicular operation is a delightful addition that will probably be appreciated more by your sci-fi geek than ordinary folk who can’t be bothered to learn how to exploit those modes!
You can run the Wankel and hold your battery charge till you need it. You can set it to kick in when the battery drops to a certain preset percentage of your choice.
You can run the Wankel Generator on a journey to an emissions zone and ensure you have a full charge when you reach the zone, switching to EV only once you’re accessing the LEZ / ULEZ area.
There are considerable permutations as to how to exploit a vehicle like this - but it definitely is not a one size fits all EV.
It’s not a Tesla, Nissan Leaf or even a Kia / Hyundai competitor.
This sits in a unique class of its own - and the design promises a rare exclusivity a discerning buyer would appreciate - especially after they realise this suits their lifestyle perfectly.
The low insurance costs compared to some more famous EV models is particularly attractive and contrary to popular belief, that single rotor Wankel Rotary Engine will last a very long time and prove more reliable than most people might believe.
One thing is for sure; exclusivity is guaranteed and you’ll never be mistaken for an Uber or a minicab.
I mean, how many other BEV Crossover Coupe Styled SUVs with a unique Wankel Range Extender have you seen out there?

Good write up. The days of "what's the gas mileage" are over with PHEV's because "it depends".

Any news on when they might overhaul/facelift/update the entire MX-30 lineup? Needs wireless for the cabin and a better main screen...its so 2020 overall.

I'm a Mazda guy but Chevrolet did this back in 2012 with the Volt. Same principle just rotary as the range extender. My 2014 just recently got totalled and I HATE that Mazda isn't bringing this to the US. I would buy it for sure as my Volt saved me so much in gas with charging the battery every day for around town driving.

I had read somewhere that the MX-30 REV was not coming to the US due to the poor feedback they had from review sites, and the comment sections. As a result, since the feedback from EU reviewers was over the top positive, they have launched this year in EU and Asia, and then maybe NA in the next year or two. Being a Mazda man myself, I know that Mazda pays very close attention to feedback from reviewers and drivers.

@timingenkamp3973 The problem was the US version of the all electric received poor reviews due to limited range. Been looking for the right PHEV suv, and this is it for me. At spme point, I want to buy a salvaged rotary off one of these so I can pull it apart for experimenting.

@@rotaryperfection I understand that as well, but initial reviews of the rotary range extender in the US was poorly received as well. Range on the MX-30 was said to be 370 miles and many Americans said this was not enough so why bother with it. I've been one of the most outspoken about the MX-30 REV, explaining how it works, mileage expectations, why it's different than a standard EV. Most of the time I fact check other reviewers when they say something incorrect about other models.

      @rotaryperfection 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@timingenkamp3973 Yea alot are simply misinformed. 370 total range is plenty and far exceeds your average electric only vehicle range.

Sadly, there's no indication of any date for a USA release. Mazda has created a super plug in hybrid. It would have the short range, 53 miles, for the day to day drives and have the option for the long range trips without the fear of being able to find a working charging station. My hope for the US version would be for them to switch to Sodium-Ion Batteries, which can stand the extreme temperatures better than Li-Ion batteries and don't have the risk of catching fire.

I am almost 3 minutes in and haven't herd how many watts the generator is or the efficiency. People are soo stupid that the imporant thing is the feeling and look and everything else but what it IS!!!. So if your trying to hide it. Then it sucks. It's trash no need to talk about it..... 3k subs 10k views. Ooo my bad man.
For such a small channel it's good enough I thought it was a huge channel and went on a rant. well done.

Sadly the negative press on the MX-30 EV has been so bad, as it should be because of the short range, that now Mazda might not be able to recover demand with the R-EV. Modern day car energy economy has to be calculated recognizing driving patterns and not a single number at a certain speed. If you only put fuel in it then a hybrid is nothing more than a more efficient ICE car. So a PHEV is the only way to get electricity into the equation and here the combination of electricity and fuel makes a lot of sense. This is so because a PHEV could theoretically use no fuel ever if you only drove it 30 or 40 miles and that actually is the average daily drive. With an EV your lugging a huge weight of very expensive batteries that you fully use rarely and you still have range anxiety. It's amazing that real world use seems to have no place in car manufacturing. That said the MX-30 R-EV is the right answer but has Mazda lost the audience.

The all electric mx 30 had a pretty disapointing electric range so they have made this with less than half the electric range, oops
now if they still had the 100 mile electric range with this system , success...what ev car makers seem to have forgotten is charging at home is the cheap to run and convenient bit, now i know people will say ,what if you cant charge at home, simple dont get an ev.
wow mazda that engine is noisy , why did'nt you put it in the back

I have a Mazda MX-5 and, you're right, I get about 8 l/100km. You assume you would never plug the R-EV in and it would be nothing more than an ICE car, but in the real world normal daily commutes could be done without ever needing fuel because of it's EV capability. Today when you talk about fuel economy...it depends.

I’m at a loss as to understand why people watch a video like this and then miss the point of the MX-30 REV completely. As mentioned earlier, it’s NOT a Prius Prime (PHEV).
In the UK, some people buy those then never charge it up - simply taking advantage of business tax incentives - or the fact that it’s ULEZ compliant in relevant UK cities. The Prius PHEV will simply give normal Prius Hybrid MPG which is great - and why they’re purchased overwhelmingly by Uber cab operators.
The MX-30 REV is a completely different concept, despite the “plug-in” tag.
This vehicle IS designed to be a BEV with a Wankel Rotary Range Extender Engine (WRREE).
The relatively minuscule 17.8 kWh traction battery is part of Mazda’s Green Philosophy - less harmful materials used to build that battery = smaller carbon footprint + less pollution building it. The vehicle is also lighter and cheaper to build. You’re not hauling a 90 kWh battery around IF you don’t actually need one - and many of us REALLY DON’T.
The resultant daily 53 miles EV range per day MUST fit into your working lifestyle (daily commute / kids to school / local shopping trip) - or you simply don’t even consider this vehicle. IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE.
The buyer WILL be expected, nay, MUST plug this vehicle into a compatible home charger every night - for the most economical use of the MX-30 REV - no ifs or buts.
You will likely spend the week commuting in the vehicle running as a BEV. Theoretically (and that’s the plan), five days a week, you’re not using that Rotary Range Extender at all - if ever.
On the weekends, your social life might mean you’re travelling further than usual - like say 120 mile round trip with no charging at your destination - that’s where the WRREE comes in handy.
Yes, it uses more fuel and gives you less MPG than a Prius - guess what? That’s your incentive to use it sparingly! It’s literally “Think before you drive” and “Energy costs money”. That’s a good thing!
The WRREE is not meant to be used every single day - consider it as an APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) to ensure you’re never stranded when the battery runs out of charge - and of course to banish range anxiety.
Many will be delighted at “12 km per litre” of fuel to get either to a EV Charger or preferably your home charger (the latter being usually cheaper), than being stranded and waiting for a tow truck.
This is not a Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, Prius PHEV or Mitsubishi EV rival - the MX-30 REV stands in a rather unique class of its own - and you should only buy one if it fits into your lifestyle perfectly - and you REALLY care about the environment by opting to purchase such a unique vehicle.
If it doesn’t suit your lifestyle, walk away and get something else - it’s NOT for you! 😌
