Biggest Problem: In the Last Of Us game Joel went through absolute "HELL" from the player's point of view to save Ellie in the end. It was by far the hardest part of the game because the humans were heavily armed. The last sequence deserved an episode of it's own episode as a final battle showdown. In the show Joel totally tears through all of the Fireflies with absolutely no resistance. It fails to capture how hard that part of the game was and how hard it is for one man to wipe out that many other men. Maybe I should make a video on this...
I feel like what they were trying to go for with that whole scene at the Firefly Hospital was proving how formidable Joel still was despite how frail he’d frequently appeared throughout the show. Whilst game Joel was always aggressive and a force to be reckoned with, show Joel was consistently more vulnerable and appeared more weak throughout. I’m guessing the way that he easily pushed through the Fireflies was meant to be some big reveal about how “badass” Joel can actually be. Whether or not it worked would probably depend on how someone feels about Pedro’s performance as Joel in comparison to Troy’s.

My game crashed and I lost all the weapons and items, thank god the chapter was unlocked. I had to do the last level with no weapons. I had no internet back then so i couldn't download the patch.

I was disappointed how they didnt show the gym fight with Bloater. It was one of the scariest thing where many players (myself included) died and they could have easily make heavy action pack episode out of where Joel would fight with Bloater. Instead we got Brokeback mountain: Old man edition.

Something I noticed in the side-by-side of Joel telling Ellie she's going with Tommy. In the game, Joel reacts as an emotional man of his character would: he yells. Show Joel doesn't yell and barely raises his voice. I'm wondering if the showrunners were concerned that a yelling man was too 'upsetting' for modern audiences.

That's a well understood concept of human psychology, noted heavily by veterans of extensive combat. You can see it in their memoirs and interviews. It usually isn't until they return from combat and enter the 'normal world' that this attitude shifts, which usually results in severe PTSD. In a world like the Last of Us, the 'normal world' doesn't exist anymore. given that, I think it's unrealistic that Joel is as emotional as he's depicted in the show. The game has a more realistic depiction of what extensive male trauma looks like.

Once I heard that season 1 only covers the first game and it’s only 9 episodes, I knew it was pointless. There simply isn’t enough time to cover the original game, never mind expanding on it which is the whole point of a series. Instead it’s only a cliff notes version which is pointless. You might as well just watch the cutscenes from the game on TH-cam.
The fact that two people can make a whole town safe and live for 20 years with almost no drama says it all about the world that has been made for tlou. Episode 3 showed a better life than alot live now and that's ridiculous. Another thing about the last episode is that they made no mention of the text and audio files you can find in the game that mention they've tried the same surgery multiple times before and it always resulted in failure and death of the subject. I remember when the game came out there was a huge discussion surrounding that aspect and the show just drops it entirely just to make Joel look even more like a bad guy

it must be the direction, the lines were good but it felt more like theatre than the game. idk if it's "worse" because they are of course more expressive with their faces, but their lines are more faded, the last scene doesn't feel nearly as impactful.

He hasn't played the game so he's reviewing it from a purely show standpoint. In saying that you don't have to agree on everything a reviewer says to still agree with them overall.
The biggest problem in this show besides the changes to the storyline is Joel and Ellie themselves, compared to the versions from the game they don’t come across as forming a surrogate relationship at all while Joel himself is way too soft for a man surviving the apocalypse.
Modern Hollywood won’t ever show a man being strong and competent. They have to prop up Ellie becoming a “strong independent” woman. Also the bond between them has to come across as weak as possible so that nobody cares when they kill him off next season. Modern Hollywood is too predictable

I played the game from ps3-5 and the story still gets me. Joel is sopposed to be a hard ass that fights for survival and Ellie is the one that goes from being a girl to a proficient confident fighter only from experiences shared between the two. But we don't get that from the show. The show just feels wooden and we never really get any reason that the two should care for each other

I will give it a solid 7. Not great not horrible, but decent. I think it it a decent show, but not on the level of The Wire, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Rome, or Deadwood. These 5 shows, are my litmus test to other shows.

The world is not believable on purpose, it's obviously a bit of fun that doesn't require you to understand the character's motives, a bit like Dusk Till Dawn or Mad Max. 3. Not all games are Doom. Last of Us made believable characters with believable motives. The fidelity of the characters was way more than we see in most videogames, so it did feel weird to be killing so many people. If you can't see the difference between Joel killing a bunch of people and the Doom Slayer killing demons (let me help you out there: Solid Snake killing 100s of guards is a better example), then you really are dumb.

The Last of Us series makes changes that, taken individually, mean very little. Taken as a whole, they change everything. 1. Two episodes stop the story dead in its tracks to tell two separate homosexual love stories. 2. Sarah and Maria are both race-swapped from white to black. 3. The cordyceps only threaten humanity because of global warming. 4. Tommy and Maria’s community is now communist. 5. The villain in episode 8 is now a Christian. 6. 95% of the action sequences are skipped or neutered so that Joel is weaker and less effective at protecting Ellie. 7. Sam is deaf. 8. Marlene knows exactly how Ellie is immune, making the cure certain instead of ambiguous, and making Joel more villainous for stopping it. 9. Joel executes Fireflies in the hospital without hesitation or remorse, the most violent he is in the whole show, the exact moment that we most question if his actions are right. Was the game about homosexuality, racial diversity, feminism, communism, ineffective men, environmentalism, anti-religious sentiment and the treatment of disabled people? The ending of the game leaves it ambiguous whether Joel did the right thing. The ending of the show wants you to hate him.
10. While trying to paint Joel as absolutely evil, the show somehow made his actions 100% right instead of morally ambiguous because the last time Joel and Ellie faced an infected was episode 5 so why sacrifice Ellie when the infection is no big deal in the first place?

I went to my barber one day, and I heard these guys talking about episode 3. They were all making fun of it, and pointing out how weird it was to see THAT instead of a boss fight from the game. Gameplay is 100% canon in the case of The Last of Us. Especially since the Part 1 remaster was able portray the state Joel is in at any given moment during cutscenes by having them run in real time instead of being prerecorded video files. Furthermore, the entire plot of Last of Us was ND's stab at addressing the ludo-narrative dissonance that plagued the Uncharted games for years by creating a plausible world scenario in which the appropriately written main character would have a narrative driven reason to kill the ever loving fuck out of dozens of people throughout a harsh journey. This was part of the reason Part 2 got absolutely shit on. Druckman just completely fucking forgot that entire attempt to marry gameplay violence with story reasoning and made a retarded game where Ellie murders untold swarms of people in absolutely grotesque ways, only to decide REVENGE BAD at the last minute.

David's men literally refer to him as a "crazy man" when they report back to David, which is a completely reasonable thing to think about a lone dude that fucking murders dozens of you almost single-handedly. Joel is not normal. Joel has an unnatural and pretty scary talent for violence. Ellie had been traveling with Joel for months by the point that players briefly control her and it's pretty safe to say that his uh... education, shall we call it? Would have rubbed off on her. She only kills like, a couple dozen dudes at most using primarily stealth, much like Joel does. A knife driving into your neck doesn't magically hurt less just because a kid is doing it. David dies because he's too full of himself to just kill Ellie and get it over with. The Last of Us is about as grounded as a game like it can be while still also basically being Gears of War. Any less combat and people would start to notice that you don't do much in the game.
Alternative ending wouldve been joel pointing out all the flaws in marlenes theory about the vaccine and wouldve been labeled an antivaxxer and banned from twitter
God the comparison of the argument scene between Joel and Ellie just drives home the fact that his has no reason to exist at all. If your intention is to make your story more accessible to people who don't enjoy games, I fell you've already screwed up. Games are not an inferior storytelling medium, in fact I would argue they're objectively the best because they let you interact with the story and learn things more naturally through exploration.
Neither is better than the other. They are just different. Like books, video games lets you inside of the character's head. So the character's actions can be overlooked. Film and television can't do this. For example, in the Hunger Games books Katniss was far more ruthless. Because film loses the ability to get inside of the her head, there is no way they could have portrayed her this way. Same thing with Joel.
I’ve reached the point where I honestly feel The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire and so forth were all innocent in contrast to newer media that is utterly hateful, speaks propaganda, and isn’t at all faithful to its IPs. ESG funding needs to stop.

They need someone who they can afford to pay, someone who isn’t busy and won’t be for a while, someone who can have chemistry with the other actor ( Pedro Pascal ),etc. It’s likely Nico was their best option at the time of recording. Then again, if you find something unwatchable, or even find yourself feeling uncomfortable because there’s a black person in it.. then I fear you might have some bigger fish to fry.

I think it's mostly direction. Pascal is being way too rigid with his tone and body language, not just in that scene but throughout the show. Joel in-game while very stoic still emotes a lot, Troy baker really gave a lot of emotion in that aspect while keeping Joel a very gruff figure. A good director would correct Pascal in this scene so that it feels like he actually has some fire get lit when Ellie brings up his daughter. I don't want to dismiss Bella entirely, you can hear some emotion in her voice and it's clear she is trying to emulate the games custscene by pushing Pedro. But the push in the games cutscene wasn't scripted, it happened because Ashley Johnson got caught up in the emotion of the scene. With proper direction i think the scene could have been pulled off half decently, which is sad.

Biggest Problem: In the Last Of Us game Joel went through absolute "HELL" from the player's point of view to save Ellie in the end. It was by far the hardest part of the game because the humans were heavily armed.
The last sequence deserved an episode of it's own episode as a final battle showdown. In the show Joel totally tears through all of the Fireflies with absolutely no resistance. It fails to capture how hard that part of the game was and how hard it is for one man to wipe out that many other men.

I feel like what they were trying to go for with that whole scene at the Firefly Hospital was proving how formidable Joel still was despite how frail he’d frequently appeared throughout the show. Whilst game Joel was always aggressive and a force to be reckoned with, show Joel was consistently more vulnerable and appeared more weak throughout. I’m guessing the way that he easily pushed through the Fireflies was meant to be some big reveal about how “badass” Joel can actually be. Whether or not it worked would probably depend on how someone feels about Pedro’s performance as Joel in comparison to Troy’s.

I was disappointed how they didnt show the gym fight with Bloater. It was one of the scariest thing where many players (myself included) died and they could have easily make heavy action pack episode out of where Joel would fight with Bloater. Instead we got Brokeback mountain: Old man edition.

Can't help but feel disappointed by this adaptation. I think Synth is right about saying this is definitely Neil's "remake" of The Last of Us. Subtle changes that normies wouldn't care to notice. The assassination of Joel's character is hard not to notice, however.

I didn't like the 2nd game's storyline but as a grown-ass adult with my emotions in check, I'm open-minded and willing to so how HBO makes everything click together. Emphasis on CLICK TOGETHER because the 1st season has to have a natural buildup to the 2nd season.

Something I noticed in the side-by-side of Joel telling Ellie she's going with Tommy. In the game, Joel reacts as an emotional man of his character would: he yells. Show Joel doesn't yell and barely raises his voice. I'm wondering if the showrunners were concerned that a yelling man was too 'upsetting' for modern audiences.

Once I heard that season 1 only covers the first game and it’s only 9 episodes, I knew it was pointless. There simply isn’t enough time to cover the original game, never mind expanding on it which is the whole point of a series. Instead it’s only a cliff notes version which is pointless. You might as well just watch the cutscenes from the game on TH-cam.
The fact that two people can make a whole town safe and live for 20 years with almost no drama says it all about the world that has been made for tlou. Episode 3 showed a better life than alot live now and that's ridiculous. Another thing about the last episode is that they made no mention of the text and audio files you can find in the game that mention they've tried the same surgery multiple times before and it always resulted in failure and death of the subject. I remember when the game came out there was a huge discussion surrounding that aspect and the show just drops it entirely just to make Joel look even more like a bad guy

The biggest problem in this show besides the changes to the storyline is Joel and Ellie themselves, compared to the versions from the game they don’t come across as forming a surrogate relationship at all while Joel himself is way too soft for a man surviving the apocalypse.
Modern Hollywood won’t ever show a man being strong and competent. They have to prop up Ellie becoming a “strong independent” woman. Also the bond between them has to come across as weak as possible so that nobody cares when they kill him off next season. Modern Hollywood is too predictable

I played the game from ps3-5 and the story still gets me. Joel is sopposed to be a hard ass that fights for survival and Ellie is the one that goes from being a girl to a proficient confident fighter only from experiences shared between the two. But we don't get that from the show. The show just feels wooden and we never really get any reason that the two should care for each other
It's almost like gameplay encounters and length of a game helped form that connection...

Last of Us made believable characters with believable motives. The fidelity of the characters was way more than we see in most videogames, so it did feel weird to be killing so many people.
If you can't see the difference between Joel killing a bunch of people and the Doom Slayer killing demons (let me help you out there: Solid Snake killing 100s of guards is a better example), then you really are dumb.

1. Two episodes stop the story dead in its tracks to tell two separate homosexual love stories.
2. Sarah and Maria are both race-swapped from white to black.
3. The cordyceps only threaten humanity because of global warming.
4. Tommy and Maria’s community is now communist.
5. The villain in episode 8 is now a Christian.
6. 95% of the action sequences are skipped or neutered so that Joel is weaker and less effective at protecting Ellie.
7. Sam is deaf.
8. Marlene knows exactly how Ellie is immune, making the cure certain instead of ambiguous, and making Joel more villainous for stopping it.
9. Joel executes Fireflies in the hospital without hesitation or remorse, the most violent he is in the whole show, the exact moment that we most question if his actions are right.
Was the game about homosexuality, racial diversity, feminism, communism, ineffective men, environmentalism, anti-religious sentiment and the treatment of disabled people? The ending of the game leaves it ambiguous whether Joel did the right thing. The ending of the show wants you to hate him.

Gameplay is 100% canon in the case of The Last of Us. Especially since the Part 1 remaster was able portray the state Joel is in at any given moment during cutscenes by having them run in real time instead of being prerecorded video files. Furthermore, the entire plot of Last of Us was ND's stab at addressing the ludo-narrative dissonance that plagued the Uncharted games for years by creating a plausible world scenario in which the appropriately written main character would have a narrative driven reason to kill the ever loving fuck out of dozens of people throughout a harsh journey.
This was part of the reason Part 2 got absolutely shit on. Druckman just completely fucking forgot that entire attempt to marry gameplay violence with story reasoning and made a retarded game where Ellie murders untold swarms of people in absolutely grotesque ways, only to decide REVENGE BAD at the last minute.

David's men literally refer to him as a "crazy man" when they report back to David, which is a completely reasonable thing to think about a lone dude that fucking murders dozens of you almost single-handedly. Joel is not normal. Joel has an unnatural and pretty scary talent for violence. Ellie had been traveling with Joel for months by the point that players briefly control her and it's pretty safe to say that his uh... education, shall we call it? Would have rubbed off on her. She only kills like, a couple dozen dudes at most using primarily stealth, much like Joel does. A knife driving into your neck doesn't magically hurt less just because a kid is doing it. David dies because he's too full of himself to just kill Ellie and get it over with. The Last of Us is about as grounded as a game like it can be while still also basically being Gears of War. Any less combat and people would start to notice that you don't do much in the game.
Everything I have heard about TLOU2 is that the plot was sloppily written and executed.

God the comparison of the argument scene between Joel and Ellie just drives home the fact that his has no reason to exist at all. If your intention is to make your story more accessible to people who don't enjoy games, I fell you've already screwed up. Games are not an inferior storytelling medium, in fact I would argue they're objectively the best because they let you interact with the story and learn things more naturally through exploration.
The game had to have you kill a ridiculous amount of people to make it a fun game. This show really could have been good, but wasn't.

Neither is better than the other. They are just different. Like books, video games lets you inside of the character's head. So the character's actions can be overlooked. Film and television can't do this. For example, in the Hunger Games books Katniss was far more ruthless. Because film loses the ability to get inside of the her head, there is no way they could have portrayed her this way. Same thing with Joel.

They need someone who they can afford to pay, someone who isn’t busy and won’t be for a while, someone who can have chemistry with the other actor ( Pedro Pascal ),etc. It’s likely Nico was their best option at the time of recording. Then again, if you find something unwatchable, or even find yourself feeling uncomfortable because there’s a black person in it.. then I fear you might have some bigger fish to fry.

11:07 Voice actors don’t get much recognition, and yet they did a _WAY_ better job here. It could also be poor direction, but it’s funny how actors are the “real” actors compared to VA’s, meanwhile the VA’s here act/act more human than using real people on screen.

I think it's mostly direction. Pascal is being way too rigid with his tone and body language, not just in that scene but throughout the show. Joel in-game while very stoic still emotes a lot, Troy baker really gave a lot of emotion in that aspect while keeping Joel a very gruff figure.
A good director would correct Pascal in this scene so that it feels like he actually has some fire get lit when Ellie brings up his daughter.
I don't want to dismiss Bella entirely, you can hear some emotion in her voice and it's clear she is trying to emulate the games custscene by pushing Pedro. But the push in the games cutscene wasn't scripted, it happened because Ashley Johnson got caught up in the emotion of the scene.
With proper direction i think the scene could have been pulled off half decently, which is sad.

Even anime adaptations like Ghost in the Shell and Death Note they race swap. People used the same excuses saying race doesn't matter and that the actor's skills and experience matters the most. Like Synth man said then why change the race at all.
