3 of those were draft lottery wins... The Sabres also lost back to back lotteries in 2014 and 2015. Best odds and Florida had second best odds in 14. Best odds and Edmonton had the third best odds. Small market and terrible management got the commish to take their #1 picks
I swear every since Edmonton was a dynasty with Gretzky they've had a curse on them where no matter how many first overalls or fotst rounders they get they won't ever do anything with them
There was a mistake in the Nico Hischier part - Nico is NOT the second Swiss-born player to become a Captain in the NHL. Mark Streit was Captain of the Islanders as the first Swiss-born player... said that Hischier only gets 1/3 of the coverage of Yakupov
And how is this offside but Cale makars goal in the playoffs wasn't. Draisaitl definitely had control of that puck. Absolutely bonkers from the old heads in Toronto.
I am very brutal, but I am also very fair. The McOilers remain the biggest bust in hockey history. More than the 2010-2020 leafs, who continue to choke to Boston/ overall playoff burnout. McDavid is proving to be a modern super star who won’t win a cup lmao
Interestingly, a year earlier at the 2011 draft, Edmonton had the opportunity to select Yakupov’s partner in the Russian national team, Nikita Kucherov. But even after choosing Nugent Hopkins, Edmonton did not pay attention to the Russian and chose Klefbom and Musil. As a result, Kucherov was drafted by Tampa Bay at number 58. If McDavid, Draisaitl and Kucherov were on the same team today, Edmonton would be the NHL's top pick for a decade, just like Gretzky's team was in the 1980s.
Wouldn't happen in the cap era, Gretzky's team wouldn't exist by todays standards. They(Oilers) had like 4-6 100 + point players each season, had a very good depth. Also since enforcers have basically all but disappeared now, the 4th line would be a bit more expensive as well. Still a shame to see 4 first overall picks and 3rd overall(Draisaitl) and still not win a cup despite making game 7 in the finals against the Panthers. Todays Cup winners pretty much all have the same thing, not a huge amount of expensive players making room for more depth. Though teams have been trying lately to circumvent the cap, which needs to stop.
You can just say "first round" or "second round". There's no point in saying "Western conference first round" etc. Only the third round has the conference names in the title.
Oh don't get me started on Edmonton... whoopsiedoodle too late. I'll try to be somewhat respectful. The Oilers with their first overall pick year after year, always staying at the bottom of the league. The fanbase with their parties celebrating their new first overall pick year after year, chanting things like "fail for Nial!" The Oilers despite drafting all this elite talent year after year, and not getting within sniffing distance to the cup, even after trading these elite players, etc... I've disliked and resented Edmonton for this for many years. Many, many years. I think I might finally be getting over it, but the early 2000's were a bitter pill to swallow watching these shenanigans in Edmonton.
This is a fun thought experiment but flawed since so many other things need to happen. Turco could have saved the breakaway, the Oilers could have tied the next game.. it's an 82 game season!
@@ScaryRevenant that has nothing to do with this and hall was traded once because he signed in buffalo on a 1 year deal once all other teams passed on him knowing buffalo sucks and would trade him at deadline and all they got was a 2nd round pick lol
Could be a personality issue. Google “Taylor Hall Reddit” and read how many negative interactions people have had with him in his early years. Obviously he could have matured since then, but it could be the reason that he’s been traded so many times. Who knows.
Sure the Leafs have been a playoff joke since 2004... but lettuce not forget the Oilers since 2007 have had *4 First Overall Picks* [including McDavid], and had a _10 year playoff drought_ from 07-17, and also didn't make the 2nd Round until 2019 or 2020 was it? Geez. I was *so* close to commenting to Habs Digest ahead of this game that Thomas and Kyrou were going to beat us tonight. And sure enough, they were in on 5 of their 6 goals to kill us. And as a single father who raised two daughters alone, it pi**es me off to no end that these guys are even allowed to play in the NHL. If you don't know what I mean, look into the investigation about the 2018 World Junior Team. When there is STILL uncertainty about whether Logan Mailloux might be eligible to play in the NHL, the fact that Thomas and Kyrou are free to play and collect huge salaries is just disgusting. But this is what the NHL does. The league has ZERO integrity. They have swept the entire 2018 Junior Team scandal under the rug. Just like they did nothing about the Lighning winning two Cups by circumventing the salary cap, and did nothing to sanction Kucherov after he went out and got t-shirts made to publicly flaunt the fact that they knew very well they were cheating, and planned it that way! Just like they did nothing about the Leafs flagrantly throwing games to be able to draft Matthews. And did nothing when Matthews himself got together with a couple of goon buddies and terrorized a lone female security guard, committing indecent exposure as part of it. But no sanction whatsoever. Just like they did nothing to sanction the players who went against the League's own supposed "hockey is for everyone" slogan and refused to wear their teams' pride-themed jerseys. Instead the NHL did the REVERSE, and banned theme nights altogether! All the League really cares about is making money. Period. So Thomas and Kyrou are *still* free to play, because the NHL isn't about to upset an influential franchise like the Blues. Or the Lighning. Or the Leafs. It's a FARCE!
Mack only has a cup because Colorado circumvented the cap with Landeskog. They sent him for knee surgery the day of the deadline and started loading up on salary before landy was even on the opporating table, then he was back game one rd one putting up a point a game. Faked a knee injury that has kept him off the ice for 2 full seasons? Brutal take. The Lightning did the same thing the year before with Stamkos. Everyone's like you gotta tank and rebuild to get a no.1 pick 😂 how well has that worked out for Edmonton, four 1st overall picks and squat 😮
Oilers had a top 5 pick from 2010-2016 (one of those was a 7th I think). Thats just interesting to me.
And they still suck
It was clearly set up. They had 3 straight #1 picks. Then two years and another. 4 #1 picks in 6 years...

The MVP season Hall had for the devil's was unreal, his skating, how forceful and powerful he was, he was just a killer.
That still frame of Matthews with his awards is terrifying.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s gotta be his worst photo of all time
It’s crazy seeing these players age in these videos. Anyone else feel older after watching this? 🤦🏻♂️

Oilers have so many number 1 picks and still nothing to show for it.
if fate had mckinnon born 1 year earlier, edmonton would have had hall, hopkins, mcdavid, and mckinnon
😭
I dont think anyone remembers Taylor Hall with the Sabres and Coyotes
You mean when Taylor went to Buffalo and said his reason was he wanted to win a Championship😂
Man the oilers use to suck three first overall picks in three years
So Mcdavid is the Lebron James
Nuge is the Andrew Wiggins
Taylor hall is the Kyrie Irving
And Nail Yakupov is the Anthony Bennett
Nah. Lebron has won a chip. McDavid has yet to do that.
@@HELL5ON well unless he make a superteam somewhere in Florida and win chips there lol
