Really enjoying Gareths press for The Creator. Such a humble dude considering his portfolio. The fact he name dropped his best boy says a lot. Seems like a great dude and The Creator is a great movie.
It’s awesome to see Edwards back in the director’s saddle. He is a master of visual storytelling using amazing visual effects. Can’t wait to see the Creator.
Love how they took the artist’s complaints and actually made things more efficient instead of just planning to and then it never happens. That alone is rare.
People were giving this guy grief for supposedly screwing up Rogue One and Tony Gilroy needing to come in and do reshoots, and it has recently been publicized that this wasn't the case at all, that parts of the ending just didn't work and it was a collaborative process between the two directors. And despite the fact that reshoots happen *all the time* on films. Now that story and The Creator has shown skeptics that yeah, the guy is the real deal and not a hack. Goddamn I really wish they'd been able to keep the AT-AT chase scene though. Goddamn.
The trick behind bouncing lights off the environment to make the light feel integrated and motivated is an amazing tip. I've started writing fiction short stories recently and that trick translates well to writing. To not forcing story elements just because you can. The story gains realism and a depth/believability from the effort you take to mask the construction.
I'm devouring any behind the scenes info I can get on this because I just can't wrap my head around it. How did Edwards manage to go so fucking hard on a sci-fi Vietnam War movie with that kind of budget? Insane work. Love it.
Gareth Edwards could be ”the next Ridley Scott”. I mean, he’s British, his movies have a large scale and great worldbuilding, and he obviously loves sci-fi.
How fascinating. Reminded me of a few things personally...got to meet Syd Mead back when the original "Blade Runner" was in production and see some of his drawing. Wow! Also, what a smart piece of advice about the real/CGI divide. Even before CGI we were doing a car commercial and the Special Effects guy said, "Sure, we can make the car move up an incline. We'll build this motorized track, hook up the axel to it and set it at any speed you want. What'll it cost? Ten thousand (in 1980's dollars)." Our Key Grip walked up and said, "Me and my guys can do it with ropes and pulleys, no extra cost at all." Yeah, we used the Grips and saved ten grand. Thanks much for this informative piece, Gareth.
It’s gonna be a tragedy when this movie bombs at the box office and Hollywood continues to shoot themselves in the foot by over-spending on ugly looking blockbusters instead of promoting more ones like this.
It's fascinating it was better in some cases to just fly the crew to a real location to shoot, I think it helped the movie feel so real. Really insightful interview
Great insight from a visionary director. Shame that this movie is coming out just as the strikes are coming to an end - feels like with JDW and the rest of the cast, they could have done some great promo.
@@whbower in what way? I thought he was a great choice. He does a lot of acting with his facial expressions which is great for a movie with an emotional element.
What I’m getting from this is VFX artists should be the reservoir from which blockbuster directors come and not art students who don’t have any real idea about the technical side of movie making but are famous for treating people like garbage and obsessively reshooting. The only real problem with this movie is the strength of the script in my opinion.
Feels weird to have the subtitles burned in on a TH-cam video, not sure why you don't just export the captions as an SRT and let us turn them on or off.
I think Hollywood can learn a lot from what he said about keeping it under 100 million budget have a core crew and film on real locations also having a VFX person in that core crew to explain where to save money and spend it with the VFX
Anime is so good at making cyberpunk that everybody doing cyberpunk have to be inspired by one of the anime, although anime cyberpunk was onspired by blade runner and wester earlier 🎉syberpank works
I watch the creator in the cinema. I thought it was film making catered to kids and the masses. I did not love it. The sound design was much too literal and diagetic, and too much action in too regular intervals. The jokes did not land in the dialogue and I didn't feel compelled to care about the characters. But then again, sci-fi is not my fav genre so maybe it's just my tastes. rant/
Gareth is a great example of a fanboy and not a filmmaker. He only takes from what films he loves. Even with all his vast knowledge of VFX and filming still doesn’t create great originality. Just another shlubby or skinny, balding or bearded go getter fanboy. Mediocrity as usual (70% rottentomatoes)
That was an incredible insight into shooting. Loved the bits about the real/CGI divide and the bounced lighting.
I remember him talking about shinning a 2nd red light behind Darth Vader during the hallway scene.
Hype for his Jurassic Park film
Learned more in this few minutes than from most other „ tutorials“…
I can listen to him talking about filmmaking four hours 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
No you didn’t
@@joeldb and why is that?

I love this comment... very apt

Directors with a keen insight in special FX and CGI in general seem to be a vital skill to possess in today's filming industry.
great director. Rogue One was outstanding. Saw The Creator last night and was equally awesome. Gareth has a great future.

He needs interesting ideas though, redoing 40-year old ones does not make you comparable to the originator .

I want 2023 to be Gareth Edwards' year.
He needs Tony Gilroy.
It’s gonna be a tragedy when this movie bombs at the box office and Hollywood continues to shoot themselves in the foot by over-spending on ugly looking blockbusters instead of promoting more ones like this.
Hopefully it does well in Asia, that’s where you want to be if you want to be making interesting movies these days anyway.
wow.. absolutely astonishing and inspiring.. and results in the movie talks for themselves.. absolutely mind-blowing visuals

Saw the Creator tonight, and now I know the one person I want to direct a live action Akira movie: Gareth Edwards
He would be a great choice for directing a halo movie. Imo
Hard Agree!
Absolutely
And Karl Urban should play Master Chief
What a wonderful memories for the crew to have, get to travel the world to all the exotic locations.
the production for this sounded like a lot of fun

A truly great movie that looks amazing - love the extra-wide Panavision aspect ratio too.
wow, very insightful!
Absolute genius!
Oppenheimer and The Creator are the only 2 films I'm gonna watch in a theater this year.
This guy is living our dream right. Making movies that come from his imagination. Good for him. Lucky git

Great work by best boy Nancy.
Metropolis (1927), by Fritz Lang is also an essential sci-fi masterpiece.

genius. Take notes Disney
Disney and Andor are Disney productions. Keep the suits away from any creative or storyline and you'll be fine
Disney is certainly a Disney production, yes.
lmfao@@HelloMisterJAMWAH
@seanolaocha940 not really. Disney (Fox) are the distributors, they didn’t make the film. That was Regency Studios and eOne.
