I just did this. Broke my drive shaft. Got the peace out. Changed these seals while I was in there. Got it all together. Thank you for this video. It helped me alot.
It was a pleasure to find technician Tuesday I changed my seals with my self following your steps and everything was perfect. Thanks for your help from Spain Mallorca.
I had a quick question if you dont mind.. I changed the oil on one of my 2006 Verados and one of them had milky oil (which obviously it had water inside) where does the water usually get in through?
What is the torque specs on the 10 bolts holding the powerhead to the mid section? I've found your video very informative and am completing the process now. Other question I would have is id you have a rough section on the drivesahft what is the best way to smooth out? Not sure if the seals ride on the driveshaft or the oil pump insert?
Hello, thank you and that's awesome you are almost done, (If you aren't done already,) the torque for the powerhead nuts are only 45 ft lbs. The seals inside of the oil pump insert do ride on the driveshaft. The best you could do is use some really fine emery cloth like 400 grit or so and smooth out the spot on the driveshaft. See if that helps out.
So what would you say reasonable/ typical amount of hours is to bill for this full procedure on a Verado to remove power head, change seals, reseat and then do standard verification testing? Great video btw!
@BornAgainBoating I've been a long time subscriber, appreciate your vids! 2011 200hp Verado, I just had a low oil pressure alarm and oil reservoir emptied due to leak. Appears it may be bad drive shaft seals. Curious to hear your opinion on time to make this repair, assuming no issues or surprises along the way. Thx, keep making the vids!
Yes, just take one of the side chaps off and you will be able to get to the shift shaft to line it up. Also you can turn the key on and put it into reverse and back to neutral so that you known the actuator is in the neutral position! th-cam.com/video/YtivxsdwEqY/w-d-xo.html
275 Verado 05’. The motor sat up for a year. I took the boat cover off, hooked the water hose up and it fired right up and ran for ten minute. The next morning there was motor oil coming out of the two pick ups on the foot. Are these seals my problem, or can it be something else as well? @BornAgainBoating Thanks for the tutorial. #BornAgainBoating
With an 05 Verado, most likely it is these seals. It's pretty common on older engines like that. Since it's been sitting for awhile, you might want to run it for a little bit and make sure that it is still leaking. Seals can dry out after sitting and then leak for a little bit when they are first used. Usually they need replaced but sometimes you get lucky :)
Born Again Boating Thanks. Is it necessary to disconnect power from the battery first before disconnecting other wires? I didn’t want to cause issues with the computer.
@@Ulyssez79 yeah, you want to shut the power off first. Then you can go to town without worrying a out it :) make sure the clean power, (if it is going to the engine, it will be a two wire, red and black, plug in the front starboard side of the engine harness) is unplugged too. That kills the power to the computer. S
Really not impressed with all the bolt rust I am seeing on this new Mercury. I have had several Yamahas that have had no rust on them and they were almost 20 years old. I love all your videos, absolutely amazing work!
Yeah, a rusty engine isn't that impressive lol That's awesome you've had that experience though :) My Yamaha OX-66 is from 2001 and has probably 2500 hours on it, but it is definitely rusty lol runs like a champ though! Thank you!
20 yrs old and no rust.... spent its entire life in freshwater and even then that’s still unheard of. After 48 yrs of boating I’ve owned them all and in OB, IB, IO as well as some V Drive and Jet Drive race boats. Some engines are slightly better than others but really they’re all close to the same. I will admit though that Mercury OB’s aren’t what they were years ago but none of the super charged high tech, high hp motors ever are, no matter who makes it, it’s just the nature of the beast. For reliability you should only buy N/A engines.
Very impressive! I cant imagine pulling a powerhead by myself! I guess if I had a crane or forklift in my arsenal of mechanic tools, I could make it work ... lol. Great video though!
Hey Thomas, yes, you do. And it's a big job to change out the head gasket on these engines. There are bolts that go all the way through the engine from the front to attach the head. So you will need to do a complete tear down and rebuild. I've never done one, but you might work up all the costs and make sure it is worth doing it.
I couldn’t imagine doing a 300 four stroke the best I have down is a 185 optimax and many many 20hps And also your basically unrigging the engine and rigging it again
Born Again Boating the opti max was horrible it had an oil leak and then we couldn’t get the bolts out through the mid section because oil or something it in there and clogged it up
Well its time to tackle this. My questions is, I have a lot of room for rigging wires. Im betting I could swing the powerhead to the side without disconnecting the wires. Has anyone tried that and got away with it? Thanks!

Great video. I have a pair of 2005 275s that are both leaking oil into the water. Other than changing the seals is there anything else critical to inspect while in there? I was quoted $2500 per motor for the job and having the skills needed I'm considering doing it myself.
Not much else to check while there. Just don't drop anything in the oil pan, change the o-rings under the oil pump, and change the bolts to the oil pump when you do. They can get brittle and break. So new ones makes it better. Plus, feel the bolts as you tighten them on the oil pump. If they feel like they are going to break, don't tighten them anymore. Change the oil seals and the water seals and the power head gasket. That's about it! It's really not that bad of a job :). While you are there, you can disconnect the shift rod and look at the white bushing around it. It would be a good time to grease that up. Can't think of anything else, that's it!
@@BornAgainBoating Curious if you have a way of greasing/lubricating the shift shaft bushing without removing the powerhead? I have a frozen bushing, and looking to lubricate it. Just not sure how to access it properly. 2011 Verado 300HP

Have you ever had to replace the orings inside the oil pump drive shaft?
The oil pumps are nonserviceable, and we changed the orings under it in the video :)
