    Haven’t had to pull a power head yet. But I worked on cars, trucks and trains for several years. I’d feel confident giving it a go. Liked your tip with the two screwdrivers. That’s why I love this channel, it has great information and tips!

    When I reinstalled my old 2 stroke 50 hp merc powerhead, I just lifted it by hand, no crane required lol.

    Everything's two weeks two weeks always two weeks two weeks I think that's what you all learned in the last day of outboard School. I was told they need to pull my powerhead so guess what I said screw it I bought a new engine instead I don't have time to be sitting around waiting. He'll it took them a week to take an engine off and put the exact same engine back on that was total bullshit

    Born Again Boating has to be the best series of marine videos out there! But I'm definitely thinking that us viewers should pool our funds and buy you another hammer to replace 'Ol Faithful. By the way...Good tip with the screwdrivers putting those nuts back on. Looking forward to your Forum starting up.

    I pulled my powerhead off of my 250 to change my motor mounts. They were rusty and the motor had enough play to affect how it would shift in and out of gear. I got the powerhead off no problem. Only two problems I encountered were that the motor mount bolts were seized into the swivel bracket. I used a whole can of “knock R loose” oil, torch and an air hammer. They wouldn’t budge. Luckily my local mercury dealer was nice enough to sell me one from their boneyard. The second thing I screwed up was the gasket between the midsection and the powerhead. I didn’t get all the old gasket off and didn’t realize how important that was, so I had to take the powerhead off again and scape some more. That was 8 months ago and she’s been awesome ever since. I also took that opportunity to change my water pump, drive shaft seal and lower unit oil. Finally, after watching your video on motor mounting height, I moved the motor up one hole. I got 2 more mph top speed and it cruises a little better and I haven’t noticed it running hot or slipping at all.

      Nice! Yeah, seen that happen a couple times :( It's funny how that works, luckily you caught it before it broke the shift shaft or blew up the lower unit! And that's funny with the power gasket lol :) Yeah, they like to be clean! Nice on the mounting height too!

      You should see the Yami where the driveshaft seized in the crankshaft and we had to cut the drive shaft and pull the powerhead to replace it :) Now that was a job lol

      @@BornAgainBoating with all your experience, do you think the parts quality are the same between the Mercury and Yamaha outboards, or do they have differences in quality of materials? I'm only going off of my little experience and my bad experience with Mercury outboards. The Yamaha outboards have always done so much better for me.

      That bad huh , I'm new to this boating thing . I've been a auto and heavy equipment mechanic since the 70,s , I've noticed boat motors and equipment are somewhat the same but totaly different in other ways .

    good old salt ,,,,,i am 68 now in 2022 back in the late 60s learning outboard mech ,,,,the fact that your always braking f,,,,,,bolts because of salt made me actually stop working on these monsters ,,,we used to say a drll in one hand and a tap in the orher ,,,,,thanks god bless

    When I pull a power head the best way I have found is to remove mounting bolts , pull up on power head a little and hit the side of the main body with a bead blow Sledge hammer .

    Why would the metal around the oil pump
    be scored as if it was scratched ? I have an engine with 13 hours that got water in the cylinders . The metal around the pump area is severely scratched up. I picked it up from the dealer, because he ordered a new power head. The mid section was left uncovered and it was raining hard. This can’t be good.

    just brought my motor in about three weeks now had to replace drive shaft the merc place having trouble pulling head now he wants
    to add heat where the bolts are not to coffin dent with this since he tried with lubricant like you did and got it off
    what's the danger of adding heat where the bolts are? my engine is a 2005 225 verado. Thanks

    I've been working on my lower end on my 200hp mercury outboard . I replaced the impeller. I stabbed my drive shaft back into the power head but my water tube seems like it is coming out when I reinstall the lower unit. Is there a good way to get the water tube to stay in place when I re stab the drive shaft into the power head?

    what do you do with your personal tools when a hurricane hits ? we had Hurricane sally destroy everything but our house due to storm surge, in my cove it was 14 feet, double what was predicted. its a pain to move my tools but the shop equipment is too hard to dismount and move.

    Why, oh why, does it have to be so hard to fix stuff on an outboard?
    Nuts and bolts are often located so that you to be left handed, preferably two left hands and at least pair of right ones too to disassemble it.

    Had a Yamaha 200 hpdi pop on me a couple years ago. Thought long and hard about putting on a new powerhead but gave up on that theory. Too much money and risk to keep the 2 stroke. Repowered with a 4 stroke. More concerned with reliability. Wasn't worth it for me. Good video again brother!

    I had to pull the power head on a 25hp 2 stroke bc it was leaking exhaust inside the cowling and starved the motor for air. it wasn't too bad and was a great time to clean and repaint the pan and midsection.

    My grandfather gave me his old 1956 Johnson 5.5hp which was in great condition, but in order to change the water pump, the powerhead has to be removed to access the shift linkage. That was the first one I ever pulled and also the easiest.

    I thought you said that it wasn’t that hard. Lol. Looks pretty intense to me. I do a lot of the work alone too! Can’t wait for this other platform to get going. I have a 2006 mako that has a rats nest going on the electric and almost no access to it behind the steering console. I need to fix this and would love to run a few ideas about how to accomplish this. It is a dual console and has had the panel cut out inside the storage compartment. So yea I could use some help with this. Thanks so much Aaron you guys are the best TH-camrs and are number one with me! Keep em coming👍

    Can an idiot non mechanic like myself do the same thing ,I believe I have the same thing wrong with my 99 suzuki df 70,the motor still has good compression but its leaking oil terribly.I already changed stator,rectifier and injectors

      Sure, but it's a big project so make sure and set yourself a couple of days to do it. So, when something doesn't go right, you're not worried about having to stop and leave it undone because you have to go do something else! Also try and make sure it's that that's leaking. I'm not sure what the driveshaft into the crank situation looks like on a 1999 DF70 :/ it could be something else

    Hi Aaron, YOU"RE THE MAN!!! I've watched most of your videos and they gave me the confidence to DIY. Last month I pulled my Verdro powerhead to replace the oil and water seals. I loved the string trick to married the powerhead back on since I was doing it myself with my (cherry picker) engine lift. Please keep up on the very education videos.     Very informative! Is the salt buildup on the bolts holding the power unit to the midsection normal? Is this a sign of not properly washing down after being in saltwater or not using products like saltaway? Just curious if all outboards will corrode like that in salt water. Thanks!

      Yes, that's pretty much normal and you can't really do much to prevent it. Washing the engine down and keeping it clean does help. But it's mainly a time and use thing and it effects all outboards being used in this kind of salt environment :( Salt away is good for the inside of the engine though, but it won't do much on the powerhead side. Different brands and models will have different things that fail due to the saltwater, but it's just a factor across the board for them :)

    So ball park it for me, what would a repair like that cost? Would assume an average individual would also include other services while you're in there like thermostat, zinc's, impeller and oil change. 2500.00? Is that close?

      Yeah, thats probably a good estimate, it took me 12 hours to do this from start to finish and that includes servicing the engine, so your probably close.

      I had a 2000 mercury 135 and went with a 2020 Suzuki df140 .. looking for fuel economy and the ability to use troll control..

    I would never have the knowledge to do this, but I enjoy watching and learning... I often wonder if our local outboard motor mechanics would know how to do this? And how much it would cost to have this done?

      Ahhhh they are easy ;) lol they should, and who knows, whats the local rate there? We're 140 an hour down here, except for one shop on the island that is charging 175 an hour, which is wild! Lol

I'm am willing and able to pay the 'rate' for experts like you... I wish you were here!... I have learned, from you, how do a lot of the maintenance on my Yamaha 300...     You should. Look into snap on a hdx sockets. The tolerances of the sockets are a few thousandths smaller and main purpose is for stripped bolts. Check it out. You will be surprised.

    I'm about to have to pull mine, I run an 03 Yamaha 115 tlrb (2 stroke) on my boat and I've noticed lately its been losing power. In the current outboard market it is next to impossible to find a brand new outboard (that didn't come with brand new boat) I'm thinking I'm going to just rebuild the top end and use it rebuilt until availability increases and I can buy a brand new outboard

    Had to do my 91 yamaha 150 cause the shift shaft had rusted off. Over all not a hard job. Just take your time. And I put the stainless shift shaft from the newer saltwater series motors in it.

    I pulled the powerhead on Johnson 40hp 2stroke because the lower crankcase seal was leaking. It was painless except for cleaning the gasket surface.

    I had to replace my power head last year its a 2003 mercury 2 stroke efi the studs were frozen I used penetrating oil and I used heat on the mid case were the studs go thru then using a cherry picker I put upward pressure on the power head and it popped out then repainted the mid section

    I've already had my powerhead removal fun 10 months ago. I got spoiled with a very corrosion free freshwater 1990 model outboard. The previous owner's leaking VRO which got deleted did more damage to the midsection paint than anything else due to the fuel.
    Getting the powehead back together though has dragged on longer than I would prefer.

    Thanks great vid and series!!! I have used Permatex copper antisieze on the bottom then the gasket. Also on the midsection of the powerhead bolts. It makes getting the powerhead much easier anytime you may hav to redo. It also works on the back of disc brake pads - keeps the noise down...that’s for those who live where they salt the roads...

    That trick of putting the nut on a flat head and spinning it on with another screw driver was an amazing shop tip! Worth watching this video alone.

    Pulled a powerhead this past week on a 3 liter mercury efi. It wasnt too bad but the donor motor was seized. Had to heat it and beat it.

    I love these motors, but those oil seals leaking are a pretty common occurrence, at least they made it easy to take off. The studs on these older ones can be a bitch

      You can do whatever you would like to do lol but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's legal ;) It depends on what the plate on the boat says it's rated for

    This is a bit off topic but i had an issue with my 07 e tec 150 where the magnets inside the flywheel started to rattle and come loose. Im gonna pull the flywheel but was wondering if running the motor on those loose magnets can cause further damage? The flywheel would lock up on and off once i noticed the magnets and some flew out. Do you think I may have caused further damage to my motor or would I be okay just rebuilding my flywheel.

      Thank you, and yes, you don't want to run the engine with the magnets loose like that. They can destroy the stator and timer base. You can take the flywheel off and rebuild it, even epoxy the magnets back on, BRP has an epoxy made for that actually.
      But yeah, you can do more damage to the electrical components that use the magnets. Hopefully they didn't get messed up and you just have to do the magnets, you might be able to find a used flywheel or one that has already had the magnets done for sale somewhere!

    I really need your help on this , at home with water on the engine starts first try and runs great but, once we put the engine in the water it doesn’t start right away and we can only go 5 mph any suggestions on what’s wrong

    I had a DF250 that had a catastrophic failure and I ended up repowering. I pulled the entire DF250 apart and parted out all of the good components and found the cause of the failure. It was a blown head gasket. Symptoms were water in the oil and low compression on 1 cylinder and 2 failing leakdown tests. I sold all the engine parts, but I kept the old head gaskets as mementos.
