One of the most real and genuine people on the internet. He's not a put on for subscribers. He just genuinely enjoys teaching people. Dave's a great guy.
@Reallybigmonkey1 That's what it supposed to be about. You're the first one I introduced my son in law to as far as bushcraft videos because I wanted to him to see good clean content, practical applications and someone who can laugh at his own mistakes. I hope I get to meet you in person someday.
I get the impression that you aren't doing this in order to get millions of subscribers and the mega-bucks. It seems like you do it, just because you enjoy it, and want to pass on the knowledge you have about enjoying the outdoors, and basic survival skills. That's awesome! I truly appreciate the fact that you don't try to make videos the OPTIMAL length, and all that. When I watch most videos from similar channels, they're typically informative, but have a sterile feel; like "Dragnet." "Just the facts, ma'am." Your videos have an organic, friendly, and almost familial feel. It's less like an instructor, and more like camping with a buddy or the FUN uncle, lol. I really enjoy that. 👍
From my experience outdoors and as a member of 2 SAR groups, freezing rain and wind is more deadly than snow. Thanks for an excellent video, Dave. Happy Holidays and All the Best .

Wow...! I love the idea of saving time and effort, by simply installing zippers on my boots! The attention to details concerning protecting our trees during repetitive hammock setups was thoughtful. Bringing along that enormous tripod was well worth the effort. It had a way of truly exploiting the angle of your comfort! Thanks for bring us along. Best wishes to you and yours for this holiday season! & sending out a special heyhoo to Nick 🤠
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Those boots are super handy for getting in and out of bed. Like they say, if one person straps a hammock to a tree it ain't a big deal until 100 people do it too. Thanks for watching and Happy Holidays for you!
All 3 are great winter options. Each individual should adjust as needed for their environment, weather, and temperatures. Another informative and logical video Sir! Thanks so much for sharing with us!
Looks like Dave is having a party in the woods with all the shelters. Great score on the new tripod. My luck the zipper would get stuck on the cocoon over hammock.
You are The Dude Dave. Enthusiasm, knowledge, and really living it all makes you numero uno in my book. And the humor.... All the best to you and yours . Keith in Europe.
It's so good to see you are able to get outside. You must be getting such a workout! Thanks for sharing, Dave. Always so happy to see your videos pop up.
Right on Dave! Up here in Nova Scotia we get lots of snow and cold. I’ve been trying to develop an el’ cheapo diy winter sleep system. So far I haven’t quite got a prototype together that I think will keep me warm enough. Done some tests in the shed and I can feel the cold creeping in at -8*C with a windchill of -16*C. You’ve given me some great tips and some solid ideas here that may get me a bit closer to something I can rely on. Thanks Dave, I appreciate you man!
That's awesome! It's tough to get the layering right for a good winter sleeping system and be cheap. Try to remember, non compressible reflective materials under you and Lofty compressible materials on top. Take care and thanks for watching my friend
Thank you, really liked the video. I was in the military and really put the sleeping system to the test. It’s a bit bulky and a bit heavy but works every time. They really did get expensive, I would love to pick one up, but don’t want to spend the cash.
Glad you enjoyed the video. They are a bit pricey but if you can get a good deal they're worth it! I don't mind the weight since I got a bike trailer. Thanks for watching my friend
The Victor S5 is a photography light stand made by Smith-Victor. Normally used to hold a light boom to place a backlight or hair light above a subject in a studio or location lighting set up. Also, today with a proper adapter it would work very well for placement of a GoPro or other small digital camera while filming alone. Used Victor light stands can still be found on Ebay. Another great video, thanks for creating and posting it.
Nice one Dave. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, wisdom, innovation and experience. Much appreciated. Wishing you and your loved ones a happy Yuletide x
Thanks, I'm glad you like the videos. I'd say tents are best for couples. Have one carry the tent and one carry the bags and mats. Thanks for watching David
Another Dave video! Next best thing to being in the woods myself! I use two different colored biners for my hammock, that way I can always keep my head at the same end. This is more important if you may have poison oak or ivy on your pant legs and don't want to get it on your head.
I hate getting so busy that I don't have time to watch the Really Big Monkey 1(!). Hope your work keeps you unbusy enough that you can keep planning lots of these videos for a long time. Keep doing what you love for as long as you can. Life has a way of changing you plans. Again, great video, very entertaining and informative.
Great options for weather and how one prefers to sleep! In the winter desert I mostly use a plow point reflective tarp with the MSS bivy (good for keeping the crawlers out) and bags or blankets and a little fire. Never tried a 'reflective tarp' on the ground - but I will! Merry Christmas Dave! 🎄
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Ever since I started using reflective tarps and matts under me in the winter I became a believer in them! Thanks for watching and a Merry Christmas to you too
Thanks for the video, Dave! It's fun to see all your favorite cool weather set ups. As a hammock camper, I can relate to your wondering which end of the Snugpack Cocoon you pulled out first. I don't use the cocoon, but the way I can easily recognize which end of the hammock I'm pulling out of the stuff sack first is by having a different colored continuous loop on each end. You could easily change out the elastic cordage to a different color on one end of the cocoon to know at a glace which end is which. Thanks again and happy Christmas to you and your family!
You are very welcome and I'm glad you liked it. I definitely need to mark that cocoon. I have no idea why I haven't yet. Thanks for watching and a Merry Christmas to you too
Dave … Another wonderful video!!! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! Can’t wait for Dave in 2025!!! God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Atascocita, Texas. 🎅👨🌾
I'm in Texas and we had the same weird weather. Been unusually cold and then bam, almost had to turn the AC on one day, in December!? Only lasted about a day or two. Nice overhead hammock scene, really taking it up a notch 😂

I still love the bug out bike and trailer , I remember the first one wheel design for the trailer . I'm getting closer to patenting an idea Dave wish me luck :) Love that small tent . Stay Happy and Safe out there Dave :)
Look forward to your videos Dave-so down-to-earth. You actually developed your own, highly variable light-weight modular sleep system w/ your last set-up. I didn't realize that I had done that also because true weather often does not agree w/ the weatherman! You nailed it w/ your statement: "You want to have options". There's nothing worse than having NO options when you really need them. Thank you Dave.
Heeeey Dave happy to see this! Getting ready to move into my new home a bit west of Cartersville away from the lake in Emerson. Lots of woods to play in! Time to practice my camping skills!
That’s awesome! Good luck with the move Cartersville is one awesome place! They recently got a new Guthrie's that puts Zaxbys to shame! There's also a store across the road from Target called Gabes. I love shopping there! Take care and thanks for watching Shelby
Great vid. I love the tent and the MSS system. I always learn more from your vids and enjoy them so much I watch them multiple times. Thanks for showing us all of these kits. Take Care and Stay Safe, my friend. Happy holidays.
Thanks Dave. I’m with you on winter camping. I live just across the lake from New Orleans and I don’t camp until after the first freeze. 😆 Knocks back the bugs and for other reasons you mentioned. Be safe. 👍🫵
Really enjoyed this one Dave. Thanks for taking the time to pack everything and then unpack it and then pack it all up again. Your effort really shows. The overview camera shots were awesome 👏👏. Y’all have a very Merry Christmas.

Thank you Gunter and lets hope for a better 2025 for everyone! I've got lots more planned for next year. Thanks for watching and a Merry Christmas and happy new year to you too brother
Hey , Dave. Enjoyed the video. All good ideas for your camp set ups. I've really become fond of using a tarp, there are so many different, good set ups that can be made with tarps. Suggestion on your small tent set ups in cold weather, use an emergency blanket as your ground sheet, with reflector side up. Works the same as your reflective sleep pad. Like I said, all good ideas. God bless y'all and I hope y'all have a very Merry Christmas.
Hello Brian and I'm glad you liked it. Funny you mentioned that reflective tarp under the tent because I showed that exact trick in my last video. Thanks for watching, Merry Christmas and may God bless you too brother
Hi Dave, great stuff, as always. Regarding the hammock set up: I use the same with frost and ice in Germany, and the Cokoon works great for me as well. Very important to have insulation below the hammock, otherwise it will be compressed and not insulating as it could this way. And interesting -you did not tell but did: to put a groundmat where you can put your feet with socks without touching the ground. Best regards from German frosty Fichtelgebirge (= translated: Fichtel mountains), Michael
Great and informative video Dave. How about doing some camp set ups with copping and carving, camp chair, camp fire and table. I just love your older vids with those.
I have some x-Military/whitewater solo- boating Buddies that do a "Winter Solstice" overnight campout usually the first weekend in January on top of a mountain in Beckett, MA at 1,200' elevation. I set my "World Record" low temperature with them at 0° with blustery wind with no tent or campfire, just a blue tarp folded over me. My bag is the North Face 0° Goliath synthetic bag. I was nervous at first, but I had the best sleep with no cold spots. I should have taken my EMS après-ski booties because exiting the bag in the middle of the night & standing on that tarp in my stocking feet while I tinkled, was quite painful. Thanks for expending the time & energy to provide us with quality content.
Merry Christmas. Enjoyed the demonstrations. Couldn't use that particular hammock setup, because I'm a side sleeper who tosses and turns all night. I do use other hammocks though. Keep up the great videos. 🎄🎄🇺🇸
Side sleeper here also. I’ve learned laying more side to side, I can lay on either side effectively. Also I found tyvek works gr8 for ground cloths, rain fly ground cloths, mat for hammock, many uses. Duck tape around edges makes it last longer, I’ve even installed grommets on the corners.
Hello David I'm from Texas here to we don't get snow it get cold but no snow once in a blue moon we do so dressed accordingly great tips and advice thank you very much God bless you always and your family stay safe outdoors my friend
That tripod top camera view sure looks higher than 10 feet to me but sure adds a unique perspective to the subject. It always amazes me how you can keep track of all your gear so well. I fumble around in my pockets for stuff I am sure is in there but can't find. Maybe that says more about me than it does about you. Merry Christmas to you and yours Dave.
I'm glad you liked the camera view! I forget a lot of things but when it comes to camp gear I easily remember all for some weird reason. Thanks for watching and a Merry Christmas to you too.
Always like your videos on gear. I learn a lot and think what I can do with my own gear. several years ago you used moving blankets on an above ground platform. I bought moving blankets just I case I need them for that.
Dave, you tell us tips on packing lightweight, and this conversation starter is about the one on choose things that are multipurpose. For my tarp and poncho and tent use for shelter, my choice of tent poles are my lightweight graphite fishing rods. They are much lighter and much better than any tentpoles and I also use them for fishing which is my choice of protein for preparedness skill development and preparedness for the harsh times to come.
I have the exact same MSS set up and I always found it easier to combine the two bags and the bivy by snapping them together with their respective snaps. It seems to keep them from wadding up on me. I have that exact same hammock and the Camo Double Nest one as well. I've been wanting that Snugpak Cocoon but wouldn't spend the money. You've convinced me to get it now. I've used multiple woobies tied together in the past to make an over and under quilt but they aren't the greatest. Thanks for taking us along again Dave. Merry Christmas to you and Nick! Ready to start a New Year of adventures with you two!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I sometimes snap Thomas together. I think that cocoon is three times warmer than wobbies. Merry Christmas to you and your family Steve!
Hi Dave, nice setups. I was fortunate to get a whole MSS sleep system years ago in like new condition for under $100. Yeah, that pole configuration on the Quarterdome tent is the weirdest I've seen also. Great find on that telescoping tripod! I'm going to have to do some dumpster diving!😆 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and family. 🏕🎅🏻🎄
I've always wanted to find a MSS system for cheap but never have. That tent is weird but I love it! Thanks for watching and a Merry Christmas and happy new year to you too Jeff!
Great video Dave! I look forward to each one and enjoy a couple of laughs as well. Merry Christmas to you and Nick. Can't wait for more videos in the New Year.
Great video, like everyone of yours Dave. Thank you for taking your time and giving us options and ideas on how to enjoy the outdoors. Happy holidays!!!
Thanks for all the videos you’ve done for us this year,Dave. Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you and yours ❤all the best from sunny and frosty England, have a good one mate ❤
Thanks for the early Christmas present, Dave! Loved this video. Very best wishes, to you and yours, for a very Merry Christmas and the best of years ahead. ✌️🎅🧦✨️👍😎🇨🇦
Good morning 🌤Got my coffee and sitting back watching. It's 34 F here and raining. Supposed to turn to snow later. You know what they say about Ohio, if you don't like the weather here, stick around for 5 minutes, it'll change!
Hi Dave! As I was looking at your fantastic homemade lean-to tarp, the thought came to mind of how feasible some detachable side panels would be. Maybe with some strong Velcro? When I saw you working around that poison oak, my skin crawled. Be careful around that devil weed, brother! That 10ft tripod is a winner, Dave! It is even sweeter when one considers it was saved from the trash! Wishing you and Nick a very Merry Christmas!
I've thought about adding panels to my lean-to as well, thanks for the great idea! I loved the shot I got with that tripod! Merry Christmas to you too Terry!
Merry Christmas Dave to you and yours it’s a balmy 27 here in PA and snowing like the different set ups my favorite is a hammock with a one wind under quilt and wind barrier and a top quilt double that If I was to go out in this weather lol
Thanks Harold and a Merry Christmas to you too! I'm guessing in the snow a hammock would definitely be the easiest way to go. Thanks for watching brother
I use an 11' hammock with a ridgeline. Tree straps and whoopie slings. The sag is set to my comfort with the ridgeline and consistent every hang. Tarp hung independent above and pitched to weather conditions. Tyvek ground cover below. Full underquilt. Normal sleeping bag thickness for temperature. My preference. Works great for me.
Hello 👋 Dave 👋 Great video as always! I like the tarp set up with the sleeping bag with the sleeping bag liner and the snugpack blanket. Have a great holiday season and I’ll be looking forward to your next video! Take care of yourself Dave.
Wow Dave what a set up. Agree about the MSS,or most mummy bags. Thats why you have a midnight bottle so you don't have to get out of your Bag. You did get me when you said add bags over bags liners in stead of the 9# military bag for -20oF and still be warm. True . Happy Trailes Merry Christmas to you all and your followers.
Happy new year and thanks for the amazing videos. Your sense of humour and way of describing things is truly inspiring. I love the personal touches you add to the equipment to improve it. Nobody on you tube does it so well and you deserve a million subscribers. My favourite channel !
Enjoyed the video. I've often wondered about using a cocoon with a hammock. Seems like it would be so cozy. My hammock has the integrated net so it wouldn't work with it. That tent is pretty odd looking. 😆
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I also have a net hammock so I wonder if you could just fold the netting over and clip it to the side and use a cocoon? That tent is weird but I love it! Take care and thanks for watching
Great presentation I loved it. I like all 3 of your options for camping. I now use a fly no matter the weather. Didn’t use one and woke up with soaking wet head. Heavy dew here in east central Alabama. But I love your videos, always waiting on the new one. Keep up the great work. Thank you for interesting topics and demonstrations.
Another great video. How much does your tent system weigh, including sleeping mat, liner, and sleep bag, and what size pack does it take, along with food, cook system, etc. I prefer an enclosed system to make it more mountain lion and bear barrier. I have a friend who had a lion walk thru his campsite one night. The lion didn’t bother him with a fire to his front and boulder behind his back. We also have black bears. I know a tent is not a real barrier, but the enclosure, which could become a trap,is more of a psychological barrier. Footprint a definite plus. so is getting sticks, rocks, briers, etc. before setting up tent. A buddy and I used to joke about bears; rub bacon on your buddy’s boot soles before turning in to keep the bears from choosing and catching you. Which machete did you have along on this trip? Please keep your videos coming. I look forward to new ones while I am catching up on the older ones!
Now, you need to stretch the trailer and make a mini camper out of it. 😬😉 Tents have always been my preferred camping. But, it’s not so bad to do some car or van camping. Sometimes the old bones need a break. Have an awesome Christmas, Dave. ✌️✊🏻
I actually thought about a mini trailer/cot/camper but I have no idea if I could pedal the weight. Thanks for the comments and a Merry Christmas to you too

Wet snow 33° is "colder" than dry powder -12° IMHO

Fantastic to hear that Debbie and yes, you gotta have options when way out on the trail. I'm glad you like the videos and thanks for watching
@@Reallybigmonkey1 LOL Mikey loves Gabe's will be on the lookout for the reallybigmonkey!
Good stuff! Will have to look into the cocoon, didn't know it existed. I use the jungle blanket as an underquilt currently. Thanks for sharing.
The jungle blanket is a solid option but that cocoon is the only way I'll go with a hammock in the cold. Take care and thanks for watching
Great vid. I love the tent and the MSS system. I always learn more from your vids and enjoy them so much I watch them multiple times. Thanks for showing us all of these kits. Take Care and Stay Safe, my friend. Happy holidays.
Fantastic to hear that my friend and I'm glad you learn from me! Thanks for watching and Happy Holidays for you too!
Thanks Dave. I’m with you on winter camping. I live just across the lake from New Orleans and I don’t camp until after the first freeze. 😆 Knocks back the bugs and for other reasons you mentioned. Be safe. 👍🫵
Nobody like bugs, heat and humidity during! Take care and thanks for watching
Really enjoyed this one Dave. Thanks for taking the time to pack everything and then unpack it and then pack it all up again. Your effort really shows. The overview camera shots were awesome 👏👏. Y’all have a very Merry Christmas.
I'm glad you liked it and man was this ever work! Merry Christmas to you too my friend
Those general issue bags nearly never fail . Ultra simple what can break .....Nada nunca
To the one n only original youtuber ! Hi Dave ,the year is almost coming to an end, for some people it was enjoyable, for some disastrous n horrible 12 months, n there r the adventurous people with lots of fun on their mind like me the old bear.

See u with more interesting n informative videos no doubt, next year, take care Gunter 😊
Sounds great Michael! Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching brother
Great and informative video Dave. How about doing some camp set ups with copping and carving, camp chair, camp fire and table. I just love your older vids with those.
Thanks Delia, I'm glad you liked it. I'll try to work that into future videos. Take care and thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing your experience and that is some extreme winter camping!
EXCELLENT video, Dave! I've been a subscriber for many years. Thank you. Where's your camera man, Nick? Lol.
Billy from Kansas.
Thanks Billy ! Nick works an opposite shift from me so we don't go out together as often any more. Take care and thanks for watching
Very nice video Dave.I did not know that they made a cocoon cover for a hammock.Very interesting looked nice to me too
Glad you liked the video! Not many know about those cocoons because so many hammock people love under quilts and over quilts.
Merry Christmas. Enjoyed the demonstrations. Couldn't use that particular hammock setup, because I'm a side sleeper who tosses and turns all night. I do use other hammocks though. Keep up the great videos. 🎄🎄🇺🇸
Hammocking banana style definitely ain't for everyone. Lol. I also use bridge hammocks. Thanks for watching and a Merry Christmas to you too
Side sleeper here also. I’ve learned laying more side to side, I can lay on either side effectively. Also I found tyvek works gr8 for ground cloths, rain fly ground cloths, mat for hammock, many uses. Duck tape around edges makes it last longer, I’ve even installed grommets on the corners.
Hi Dave.
Good weekend to you👍.

Waiting for the sun to shine.

Hello David I'm from Texas here to we don't get snow it get cold but no snow once in a blue moon we do so dressed accordingly great tips and advice thank you very much God bless you always and your family stay safe outdoors my friend
I can agree with that, clothing is a huge part of dealing with the cold. Thanks for watching and may God bless you too
Thanks 🙏 Dave! ❤️🙂
Thanks for watching Tim!
Thanks James, I'm glad you like them. Those moving blankets are tough and cheap, perfect for camping! Thanks for watching brother
I love that you use your fishing rods as tent poles - what a great multi-purpose item! Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching Ronald
Fantastic to hear that! Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas to you as well!

Good morning 🌤Got my coffee and sitting back watching. It's 34 F here and raining. Supposed to turn to snow later. You know what they say about Ohio, if you don't like the weather here, stick around for 5 minutes, it'll change!
It sounds like you're about to have some fun with the weather! Stay warm and thanks for watching my friend
Excellent set ups brother. Stay warm.
Thank you Brother Jim!
Merry Christmas, my Friend. Hope you have a great holiday!!!
Clark and Virginia
Thanks and a Merry Christmas for y'all too!
Love your videos, merry Christmas and God bless
Thank you Mick! Merry Christmas and may God bless you too my friend
Sounds like you have the hammock camping down to a science. Thanks for the input and thanks for watching
Thank for video my friend am glad, am apreciate video

Thanks for the well wishes! We appreciate it and Happy New Year to you as well!
Great video Dave
I'm glad you liked it Hiram!
Yeah, I love that setup for varying temperatures. Thanks for watching and a Merry Christmas to you too Bill

Happy new year and thanks for the amazing videos. Your sense of humour and way of describing things is truly inspiring. I love the personal touches you add to the equipment to improve it. Nobody on you tube does it so well and you deserve a million subscribers. My favourite channel !
Thank you so much Ashley! I'm glad you like the way I do things so much and a Happy New year for you too!
Good stuff man
Thanks Brother!
Always entertaining as usual!!
I'm glad you enjoy the videos!
Great video Dave, merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. ……Dave likes Tents…Who knew.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it and in my older years I've grown to love tents! Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to you too!
I'm glad you liked it and I agree, a fly is a must have in most situations other that our hot dry summers. Take care and thanks for watching Ken
