Super Cheap Insulated Tarp Shelters, One and Two Person Versions

- Not everyone is rich, we cant all afford fancy mountaineering tents or Military bivies. Heres two cheap versions of tarp shelters made out of readily available items consisting of tarps, ropes and moving blankets. Save a few bucks and dont freeze!

Never mind any comments about video's being too long. The comments are by people who do not listen to what you are talking about. If they listened they would find that not only are you telling how to make or do do what the subject is, but you are also explaining why this or that way is good or better then another way!! Which can spark idea"s on how to do it too, even only if you have part of what is needed. You explaining why can lead to, If needed doing this in this fashion can make it do what he is doing with proper items. Doing it the other way will just harder, and I know what I will buy after I sell some of the junk and do some recycling. Keep up with the why you want it done a certain way comments!!

Thanks Dave and Nick! I actually built and used the one man shelter for four days in freezing weather. I used para-cord and two ground stakes at each end and a ridge line stretched over two crossed pieces of bamboo (dug in at the foot) ,that I also use as trekking poles and shooting sticks, such that the shelter was free standing vs between two trees. This shelter works great!!! I didn't simply "endure the cold" I actually slept great without a fire! This shelter is almost as warm as MSS and is ultimately more water proof and so damn cheap! and it is more versatile to carry because the components can be used in many different ways depending on the season or location. If you are a big guy you can use two moving blankets and the next size up camo tarp 9 x 11 (available at Harbor Freight). You can also avoid sewing eyelets if you want to by using 6" piece of Gorilla tape folded over edge of blanket such that you have a 1 1/2" tab. I had to rush to get my shelter ready for a hunting trip and didn't have time to sew but this expedient actually seems quite adequate. Press the tape on hard then install tarp grommet (grommet kit also available from Harbor Freight.) in tab. Be careful when you apply the tape and make sure it is where you want it because once you put it on you will have to rip the blanket to get it off!

I have done a lot of swimming and fishing in the lake. That had a park in the water on the north end of the lake. It had slides and swings and a few other things and they were all out in the water. I ran around that area a lot in the 50's and 60's. We moved to Crestview, Florida where I graduated High School in 69 and went to Guntersville A.F.B. to enlist in the service. A lot of our family still lives in those areas. It was such beautiful country to grow up in. I always look forward to your videos. Thanks

Nice idea. Reminds me of the people who herd reindeer and live in a insulated tipi. If you buy a small tarp and cut triangles to cover the ends you could better retain the heat captured by the blanket. You could attach the triangles with pebbles and string or add grommets from Harbor Freight with their tool. Liked your mention of just using a tent but it is fun to problem solve. Even using a triangle at the end with 3 attachment points will allow air and moisture ventilation but in windy weather you will better retain some heat on a cold night.

I was thinking earlier that by morning you might be a couple of soggy little dish rags by morning lol but no, the blankets absorb the condensation. Really well-thought-out setup!

I guess with the weather here it happens. For example, last Tuesday, we had a high of 70 degrees, next Tuesday it will be a high of 38 degrees and snow! These are great Dave! Ive been using a harbor freight moving blanket on my bed as a comforter and it does the job and its cheap. I tried wishing it once and it started to fall apart, so I doubt it will last me two washings, but for this purpose, I believe they will be fine for en emergency situation. The American one looks like quite a lot more long lasting. My brother in law makes furniture and he uses the real deal stuff and that stuff lasts them decades. But I bet they are a huge amount of money more. For the price though and for this use, you really can't go wrong with either of the two you showed here. And, if you ever did want to replace the harbor freight one, the insides of the old one will be compact tinder!
+traderjoes Thanks Bro! Man Ill say this, I think the ones made by Haul master and sold at Harbor freight are pretty cheap. The ones made by Wel Built or American Moving company are way way better and can actually be washed. Buy the ones with the black stitching next time and see how they last. Thanks for watching

Hello my son! Dave, some people here seem to think you are Macgyver or something. You should use his quote of "Stay out of trouble, keep the expenses down and don't get killed." So, that being said, nice move getting away from poisonous snakes. This is similar to your video of long ago but with the added info of the fact that it is insulated and with room for two. I am about to move to the country across from a national forest. Cool, huh? I plan to duplicate your stuff and record it. The twist will be that I am a woman who is nearly 70. In the forces we used to pile leaves, grass, etc. to make a comfortable bed and this cocoon method has given me some fresh ideas about those old methods. You're an innovator bro. Keep em coming

I have done well with a hammock (plain net hammock), poncho, poncho liner and a space blanket..... slept warm through a snow storm in just those, but I REALLY like your ideas for both the one person and the 2 person shelters and I really like the use of the moving blankets for insulation. These are brilliant. I wouldn't have thought of moving blankets, but a trip to Harbor Freight would probably give me a better 'bag' than I could buy for the same money anywhere else. I usually end up camping in rainy conditions with minimal gear, so a warm, dry bed makes a world of difference. Thank you!

Dave this is the first of your videos I've seen where you edited something out. I personally would have loved to have seen you making tracks when the snake surprised you LOL! LOL, ah man no one wants to see two rugged outdoorsmen running like little girls. You can make the shelter snake proof in three weird ways. Add a bug net over the ends "snakes cant stand the feel of a net for some reason" cover the ends with a blanket or tarp of sprinkle crushed red pepper in a line across the opening. They cant stand thats stuff because their senses are so keen. Stay tuned for more!

I didnt like the noise either when I heard it during editing. We used to argue over that a lot in the past. I probably should have brought a different tripod for him
+Reallybigmonkey1 Hey there, Depending on the video editor you use.... many have the ability to remove select sounds/noises. You just take a sample of the sound and it will remove all of those that match.
Hey thanks Dave I am one of those "I like long videos" guy. really enjoyed this. I could tell Nick was there from the hands and feet. Recognize them any where ha ha. On the first one it seems you could pound in a stake , not a tent stake but a big one to tie off the low end if you only had one tree. Nice to see the team together looking forward to the next one.

Suppose you have no gear at all. Just normal household stuff and suddenly -- gasp -- tshtf. Oh no! So how would you survive using JUST the stuff from your home? What could you make a shelter out of? What could you cook with and hunt with? What could you use for protection? What would you take with you from home given a short warning period of say..., four hours, before staying would be too dangerous? Assume you have no vehicle so you have to carry everything.
This mission, should you care to accept it, would be very interesting to see.
Cue music: Dum. Dum. Dum. Do. Dah. Dah. Cue Tom Cruise appearing like a demented midget on Coke and Crystal Meth: All shiny eyes and excessive energy.
To make it really interesting, include a weekend stay in the wild with what you have salvaged from the house.

Stuff from his house would include such 'normal' household items like machete, though night lights, ration packs and NBC suits. Maybe it should be stuff from a neighbours house.....

Always like the way you use trees and tarp and rope set up. Good if you live near the woods. I live in a desert area. But anyone can use this set up. Thanks Dave and Nick great video!

+StandsWithABeer Thanks man! Yep, that first one can get you out of the cold in a bad situation. All you need is cordage, some kinda tarp or plastic and a blanket or fabric and it will work.

@@Reallybigmonkey1Lord, me too! Although they love running into me! I was driving to Dallas from L.A. and stopped in a "pretty" place to eat my sandwich. I sat on a large rock and I DID check for critters. Halfway through my sandwich I discovered I had a nest (?), A LOT, of baby rattlers under a rock I was sitting on, got up to move just in time to see a sidewinder cross about 4 feet on front of me!
I just went back to the truck just to collect myself and "expect" more snakes...and spiders while on my trip...😳🙏😫

Yeah, not too many cliffs here in Florida. My partner and I were out hunting and the temps that morning got up to about 45 degrees and we came up on a monster diamond back rattler coiled up. He wasn't moving much, but he did strike at us and we struck back with ye olde shotgun. These are a couple of pretty neat shelters. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I was born in Florala, Alabama. Love the scenery and type of woods that were there.

I've had Baby Copperheads coming up on my carport since Christmas Eve. I live just South of Atlanta, and this has been a Very Crazy Winter so far! Now it's supposed to get cold for a couple of weeks.

A couple more super shelters I sure could have used "Back in the Day" when I had scouts qualifying for their Red Flannel Awards. Those things would have been MUCH warmer than those expensive nylon tents and a WHOLE lot cheaper. Thanks for another great video.

Great video. The 2 man tent is more of a man-woman tent. I can't think of any of of my friends that I would want to be sleeping that close to, especially depending on what we had for supper. 😁.
Also if by yourself,. I think that bigger one would be great to put all your gear in out of the weather.

Thang I like about put'n weaben on the ands of the packen blanket and sewn in tie up straps is ease of conveinience and the amount of stowage space you save on and the ends are at fixed locations. You gave me sem grate tips thanks ever so much for sem Great Do It yer selfers.

Those harbor freight camo Moveing blankets are so useful and are vary warm! They are a lil heavy but I just deal with it, and only 11$, good call on those buddy!! Thanks for a great vid!
They are cheap and handy. I'll also have to add, the ones at Harbor freight are pretty heavy but the ones I bought several years back at Northern tool were half the weight but the same price. I have no idea if they still carry them. Take care and Thanks for watching Josh

i watched a video from Gruntproof, who mentions your more detailed video, about winterizing the Poncho sleep system or "ranger roll" sleep system.
I took a HF *wool* moving blanket, and the HF grommet kit, added grommets to the wool blanket, and will be adding a rothco casualty blanket, for a winter sleep system.
I figure for testing set ups and materials Harbor freight just can't be beat! Thanks for watching Nicolas
again beautifully made, you have again succeeded, indeed, seems to me a warm shelter, and I think it is warmer and as heavy as the military version, so it is better in my opinion, but especially versatile, thanks for the time you're putted in to, you're a few hours working for us and to show us, I really appreciate it

Ive slept in a warm bivy at night only to awake to change clothes out in the open in the freezing woods and that sucked! LOL. Thanks for watching.
