Sorry, but the video failed to discuss WHY curbs are used (as the title suggests). The main reason why curbs were used in the first place was to prevent dirt and gravel from being dragged onto the track when drivers cut the track (which they will do, regardles of if a curb is there or not). As track limits are often tarmac these days, they are often not needed for their original purpose and instead function as a (mostly unsuccessful) deterrant from cutting the track.
How about protecting the edge of the ashpalt from being dug up and damaged as the corners are cut. Just think of how bad that hole one the inside of the follow through got on Top Hear
In the safety aspect, you should’ve mentioned that kerbs also make a distinguishable noise, so drivers know when they are at the edge of the track. It’s a useful auditive guide
Well, yes, if any other team principal had complained about the kerbs at the Red Bull Ring, that might have been the answer. Christian Horner, of course, is team principal for Red Bull Racing :)
@@evann5451 If a driver "looses control" and goes off track, its either because they ran out of talent, or got punted; either way, the kerb damage is unlikely to be the issue (the broken suspension that got them there, or the tyre wall impact is likely more significant). I'd agree with you for sausage kerbs, because an error (even by someone else) can put a driver in danger.
When I did my first track day, I touched a few Kerbs just like I'd always seen racing drivers do and as I'd normally do in racing games. The difference in grip levels for those split seconds was insane, it was like being on ice. I very quickly decided to stay off them for the rest of the day lol.
Still learning about kerburbs 🤣 Grew up watching racing a bit here and there but....... Just got into f1 this season because of the engineering marvels behind the cars and fell in love with the teams and drivers! Definitely here to stay as a growing fan of the sport!
tires touching the grass or gravel if it runs wide is a big no no most of the time because it upsets the balance of the car enough to cause major accidents in the grass' case, and produce clouds of smoke that blocks vision for other drivers in the gravel's case. Originally Kerbs were intended to be strict track limit warning tools as they were built with a very steep angle with the intention to bounce drivers off of the sides of the tracks if they touch it, but it has since been replaced with flatter kerbs as the cliff kerbs back then ironically became one of the major causes of roll over accidents.
Yep... Ever since the crown lost to a bunch of angry farmers across the Atlantic, they have had spelling problems! A bonnet goes on your head, boots go on your feet, and gas is a liquid that powers your car. Silly brits!
As an American I always figured it was a compromise to enforce track limits. Little more effective than painted lines, little less effective than landmines. Just something, somewhere in the middle of those two alternatives.
you also have to Remember that most f1 tracks are also used for gt cup racing, Nasscar, Indy, and moto Gp so the kerbs need to be suited for all of the different types of races
It's not like they could be moved or anything... Also seeing that f1 car perched in a fence doesn't seem to suit F1, which is one of the types of races held at these tracks.
I remember seeing a curb when dropping off a friend at Exhibition Place. Not an F1 track (Indycar, rather), but a neat little piece of the track which you can actually drive your own car over. If I'm not mistaken the track in Montreal is open access outside of the race and is treated as a Park Road during that time. I want to actually drive down it some time.
High and wide kerbs like in Spa are wonderful. Such a nice flow going from one to the next. However, in Singapore and Baku are normal kerbs that are almost like sausage kerbs and they are awful for a nice flow. You touch them, you lose control, flow is gone. Sausage kerbs should only be in run off areas, not directly at apexes
The huge curbs take away from some exciting racing so I agree getting rid of the sausage curbs is a good idea. I'd rather see a bit of grass or gravel right after the track limit curbs and if a driver were to push to hard, it's up to them to save it. btw, in America at least the overlords of windows 10 have decreed that "curbs" is correct for us, "kerbs" gives me that annoying red misspelled bar under it haha.
Just a thought: kerbs indicate track limit. The technology exists to camera monitor every curb on a circuit. Every time a car exceeds the track limit (kerb) they are given a 2 second penalty. I imagine the drivers would figure out pretty quick where they have to keep the car to avoid losing a race thinking they were fast.
They also give reference points for braking distances and trajectories. And of corse they are uneven to create sound and vibrations to warning the driver of track limits
I will say this about the raised curbs and the "sausage curbs" (Nicknamed "Turtles" here in the 'states), they do work for heavier vehicles like stock cars and endurance racers... but man they are hell on the open-wheeled cars. At least they can be taken out and put back in without any real modification to the track.
Up until a few years ago I've only seen kerbs in F1, lately they renovated the road near where my aunt lives and in the corners placed concrete.. kerbs? I guess we can call them kerbs, since in Hungary they are referred to as "Shaker Stones", since, you know, they make the car shake a bit. DIfference is these are level with the road and the runoff is more of a fall-in-the-ditch. When I first saw them I let the car onto them to see how it feels and sounds.
All nice and dandy about the video, but... I can't now unsee the scene of Matty chilling by the fireplace while Tommy delicately caresses his hair... BEST LAP TIME just got a new meaning for me ^^'
Crazy YT, I was literally playing Grand Turismo 4 on my PS2 about an hour ago and thought this to myself and this gets suggested. I didn’t say anything out loud or have my PS2 hooked up to any internet.
Max when he is looking at the rules for track limits at Turn 4 when it changed for the race: *my time has come to beat Lewis and got to give the position back to Lewis and angry Dutch noises* FIA: The MaFIA Master🅱️lan is successful
i think it would be good if at least in some places, there wasn't always an exit kerb to kind of smooth out the transition between the fastest line and being slow in the grass/gravel. if it's just the edge of the pavement and then grass, we'd be able to see the drivers carry speed right up to the last inch of road. it would be like a less exciting version of seeing cars having to go inches from the walls on street tracks
point of clarification...apex kerb =/= entry kerb. Entry kerbs are situated on the outside entry to some corners similar to the location of exit kerbs, and drivers will tend to specifically use them to slow down more quickly, and to unsettle the car for turn in. Apex kerbs are what the video tried to refer to as entry kerbs. See turn 1, Circuit of the Americas for an example of an actual entry kerb.
As an American, KERB is the most hilarious spelling of CURB in the world to me. When I was younger and was just getting into racing and international spelling of English words, the first time I saw “kerb” I literally thought that “kerbs” were some special kind of more refined road border that I could never understand. Turns out it’s just manipulation of the same letters I’m familiar with, in way I am unfamiliar with and completely valid as my own. I don’t understand “kerb” at all, but that’s okay, because as I kid I still had to mow the grass up to the “curb” regardless of whether you want to call in a “lawn” or a “garden”
Coming from Karting, I'm 100% for raised kerbs. For raised kerb you have the risk vs reward. You need to decide if it will save you time, the margin of error before it upsets the car, and how it might affect your tires. Flat kerb needs no decision making. Use it.
You can drive the Montreal Circuit since it is used as a road most of the time to access the Casino. Of course you 'll want to run you tires over the curbs to get the F1 feel.... Driving over them at any speed in a regular car makes you feel like you are going to rip off your suspension, and these are the lowest white and red ones. Amazing that F1 cars glide right over them like they do.
Interestingly, 'Kerb' is the correct term for the edge of the road, and Curb means to restrain, like "Curb your enthusiasm". Except for (you guessed it) North America (including Canada), where they use "Curb" for both.
I think they should install (literal) mines beyond the kerbs and then place an electrically charged 'speed boost line' you can only utilize if you stay within the stricter interpretation of the track limits. Some would call it 'fake' and video-gamey (looking at you forumula E) but hey, it would encourage cleaner interpretation of the racing line.
That sausage kerb at the Bus Stop at Spa-Francochamps, what a beautiful addition that was, helping F1 cars to FLY 😀 Kerbs themselves aren’t the issue are they? It’s the fluid approach to track limits that’s the problem, the drivers aren’t being given concise and clear instructions or having those instructions backed up by the stewards during FP, Quali and then the race. They stretch the track out as far as they can and see if they get caught, if they don’t then the drivers who are adhering the track limits as laid out are being penalised for sticking to the rules. Time for race stewards to hand out time penalties earlier in the weekend and force the drivers to drive the track as it is designed to be used.
I think there should be an electronic way of measuring track limits ie if center of car is over the white line it triggers, and if u do it 3 times u get a 3 second penalty.
It seems that there needs to be a way to prevent track extension actions by drivers. The obvious solutions is grass and gravel, but we do not want cars to crash because of being crowded by lap 1 chaos. This all goes back to track design. Tracks such as in Singapore have walls. Should all track now have walls? Also, many tracks are used for motorcycle racing as well. The raised curbing is an effective tool to keep this under control.
I almost think it would be worth having a slight drop of a few inches at most with standing water outside of the flat curve. Nothing that would cause a car to crash or deap enough to drown in in the case of a roll, but enough to eliminate traction and force a tire (tyre :p) change. Great because during practice, said tires are not damaged.
In my opinion: Remove all kerbs, put grass (preferably) or sand/gravel immediately to the outside of the white line that defines the race track. The drivers with the most skill will benefit the most, putting the race back in the drivers hands, and not be so dependent on the car. Discuss.
i mean yes, i agree with you that this is a sport for the most skilled driver, but since u cant see the ground about 10 metters and less, it would be nicer to scrape the edge and be reminded its the limit edge with the rrrrrrrr kerb noise rather than a instant slip with a miniscule touch of the slippy grass
The situation is also affected by the circuit being used by other series including Moto GP. I wish all the tracks had a white line and grass, but I know it's not that simple because it may be necessary to slow the car down and grass is very slippery. I do really hate all the track limit bullshit; it detracts from the enjoyment. It seems possible they could have electronic means of determining if a car has exceeded track limits and a time added system at the end of the race. So every time some sensors determine a driver exceeds limits, the team is informed and a time penalty (1 second?) is added to the driver's time at the end. It would be less intrusive and there would be no arguing.
Kerb is the UK, curb is the US if you're talking about the bit at the side of a road/track. However, to curb your enthusiasm is spelled the same on both sides of the Atlantic.
FI needs to analyze every corner where they have to enforce warnings, penalties, and judgement calls for track cutting and comes up with a solution to each one on a case by case basis with the ultimate goal being no enforcement needed and the safety isn't compromised. Like the Bahrain corner, maybe just say do as you please boys, but other corners maybe a strip of grass or some high tech linoleum type coating beyond the track limit that will kill traction if you exceed them.
I subbed after u asked me too cause the way you did was just funny as hell, but when put the hitmarkers in when touched the kerbs i activated the bell 😂

Now lets do “Tyre” vs “Tire”
That would make me tired
Idea for future WTF1 video.
"Why do F1 cars have wheels? "
The hit markers earned you a sub good sir... 🤣
