2:40 - Jim McDonald was such a Jekyll & Hyde character. Minus the drink and the insane levels of jealousy, he was mildly amusing and likeable. But with alcohol and his obsessive paranoia and jealousy he just became a monster. To me, he was a man not suited to marriage (to anyone) and he also made ex-military men look bad.

    • @shylinh5939
      @shylinh5939 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

He could be witty and amusing, but so often he was a second away from an angry rant and on the verge of punching someone or actually punching someone. Liz was forever trying to pacify him before giving up and losing her temper too. Beverly Callard looked quite drained a lot of the time, I'm not sure whether she was in character or exasperated from playing her character.

The Liz and Jim storyline is ridiculous. Don't know why the writers did that but this is a soap so need drama. When a relationship has escalated to physical abuse it's time to end it. Even before with verbal/mental abuse before it becomes physical.

I have trouble appreciating anything remotely positive or redeeming about the Jim McDonald character after the 2018 storyline involving his supposed dead infant daughter "resurrection"
A person would have to be a sociopath to do what he did to Liz.

Sometimes I don't understand these storie lines. Andy must have been about 1 years old when Liz was fooling around with Jim's friend but now he's using it against her and making it sound like it happened yesterday. Sheesh. And he's on his father's side, claiming he had provocation. There is never ever provocation to hit a woman, you just don't do it.

Well, Jim did explain it (the 1st affair) as the start to his permanent suspicion of Liz. Perhaps Andy sided with his dad on that, having Steve trying to steal all his gfs and watching Des do the same. Doesn't make hitting Liz ok, but justifies Jim's jealousy and distance from the family.

Have Andy & Steve McDonald forgotten about Jim, their dad
Giving them both a good hiding ?
    Conveniently forgotten!
I think Andy got a real going over, mild mannered Andy who
Only disagreed about something with Jim, but Jim was half cut at the time & made a right mess of Andys face
Same with Steve who got a belt in the mouth from Jim who let his temper fly
Yet the pair of them despise their mum for not wanting to give their lovely sweet father another chance to beat her up again...???
Liz is terrified of Jim & fears he will go crazy again when he gets drunk & decides to bring up her
Dress sense, how men are attracted to her, he blames her for his own failings which is the main beef on his part.
Yet both his sons are sticking up for him??? Incredulous!
They know Jim is violent because they have felt his blows when he gets on the whiskey!
I have come across families in similar circumstances esp the husband using his fists on his wife & his kids, smashing up their home & none of the kids side with the father
All of them support their mum
& stick with her to get away from the patriarchal violence
The dad ALWAYS promises never to hit them again, every promise under the sun
But as soon as hes stolen cash from his wifes purse & emptied the kids piggy banks to buy drink they all know whats coming when he returns violently drunk!
Once they hit their wife, it the
Begining of a barage of slaps punches & kicks, they NEVER stop!
Cant believe Andy & Steve would criticise their mum & stick up for their dad!
When they both have suffered under his fists!
Liz did right enforcing the court order distancing rule!
At least she neednt be afraid for a few weeks!
    Regards

Same here. You have to wonder why her very first act after Jim hit her was to apply make-up to emphasize the bruises. Who does that? No, of course she didn't deserve Jim's fist, but this speaks to her manipulative character that's been in play for years. She's far from innocent in how the marriage has wound up where it has.
And now, as if that's not bad enough, she goes straight back to Des to see if they can pick up their relationship (and presumably take it much further) now that she's decided to divorce Jim. She would happily do this without any thought for her sons or anyone else! Then, after Des has washed his hands of her, and Sean Skinner offers her a job, she has the audacity to act offended that the "boys club" is demeaning her...when she literally offered herself to Des. Honestly, I find it impossible to feel sorry for her.

I cannot think why they should have the actor who is to play Diane in Emmerdale as Fiona's mother. I would have made more sense to have Angela Bruce to play Fiona's mother.

I can remember watching the Liz-Jim domestic violence storyline at the time, and not thinking too much about it, because I'd never experience anything similar myself. Now, 26 years on, and having experienced something similar, I just wonder why Liz was being shown in such a bad light, as if she was solely to blame. This is one of the reasons abused women DON'T report things, because they are afraid of not being believed. Why did Corrie wish to highlight this? It's quite uncomfortable viewing.

    • @Chillmax
      @Chillmax 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Nobody needs to or should hit anyone, you just have to keep your hands to yourself & walk away. I'm not at all sure that the story has the slant you suggest, knowing TV from this period, it's likely to be very balanced, but as you say, it is very uncomfortable for you due to your experiences. I would just say that if women knew what it was like to be full of a massive amount of a substance, testosterone, that at any moment will allow you to knock an enemy to the ground, bash them senseless & strangle them, but that 99.9% of men never do that, they might possibly be amazed at how controlled most men are under provocation. No excuses, but you can only push certain men, so far, try a few syringes of testo, & without years of societal conditioning, you'll be ready to punch the milk man out just for jangling his bottles too loudly!!

I'm sorry that happened to you. And I agree, I can't think why Corrie made it appear Liz was to blame. It's never ever right to hit a woman and all this talk of provocation is just a cop out.

@@christinefougere I always find it rather revealing of a person when they say, "never hit a woman", when surely shouldn't it be 'never hit anyone'.

My God! How the hell did Charles Lawson ( Jim McD) put in such an incredible frightening performance terrorising poor Liz!
My lower jaw dropped like the glove compartment of a mini minor!
It was really convincing & mesmerising!
Jim wasnt kidding with the violence & power behind his anger & im wondering how the heck he psyched himself up to do that scene!
    Did he get drunk?
    Did they give him PCP?
Or did he think of some dreadful injustice done against him to get that acting so powerful!
Im betting some of the actors got slightly hurt or injured during Jims mad scene
The part where he was on the ground being manhandled by the cops & grunting & seething with growls & screeching!
No wonder Liz was terrified but
She has to own up to some of the blame for the years of flirting
& admitting to affairs ( the ones she owned up to makes one think there must have been others over the 20yr marriage)
Liz knew Jim was volatile & more so when drunk, she should have curbed her provocative behaviour & dress.
While women should dress how they want, they need to accept the consequences if men are aroused by what they wear.
Ive no bust to talk of & can wear plunging necklines without exposing huge boobs & inciting
    Lascivious leers from men.
If i had larger boobs id feel uncomfortable having male attention staring at them & not me.
Thats just my personal preference & if a woman has a good figure she can dress how she wants & maybe enjoys the looks of men around her.
But again, men are men unfortunately & dressing as such is tantamount to
" Asking For It" which annoys me to say that, but .. well men get the lust up & cant control themselves so unless the female can defend herself or is with a group of friends to protect her
Then... its very unfortunate if things get out of hand.
Sorry to have rambled but.. well
    These things do happen still.
    Regards
    🇬🇧👧
