    To be fair, Demon Slayer, CSM, Twin Star Exorcists, JJK, and Black Clover all took their cues from Bleach, all their authors explicitly said Bleach is one of their biggest inspirations which is why monsters/demons vs monster/demon slayers is so big lately.

    • @ben99ny69

      I've never heard demon slayer or chainsaw man's author say they took inspiration from bleach (which took inspiration from YYH which then took inspiraton from dragon ball).
      Chainsaw man's author said he had to copy what was popular in the shounen magazine (JJK) to get a placement within the magazine and to do well. But also stated he wanted to set himself apart.

    There is this thing called tropes and another thing called plot shortcut. You use the same things over and over (tropes) because people know and like them, so you don't have to waste any time in explaining them. And you also use the same things over and over because they become shortycuts to where you want the plot to go to, thus skipping a build up that can be very long and will lose a lot of people.

  • @Filippo_Serra.
    @Filippo_Serra. ปีที่แล้ว +19

    well, shonen isn't a genre, but a target, and every manga, aside from its themes, has a target, defined only by the magazine where it's published on.
    Because of that, shonen becomes just an indication of the target of the magazine, and not of the themes treated in each manga, i could take for example the 7th part of JoJo (Steel Ball Run), wich was initially published on weekly shonen jump, but soon moved on to a seinen monthly magazine, due to the author's need for more time to work on chapters, this change didn't affect the manga significantly tho.
    Also, anime doesn't have a target, because it isn't published in any magazine, so you can say that an anime is inspired from a shonen manga, but that doesn't mean it has a target, and it doesn't mean it is meant to be seen by a similar audience as the original's.
    Targets are entirely separate from genres, in fact, you can have an action/battle manga like chainsaw man and a comedy manga like spy x family both being shonen, this shows how targets are more of an objective thing for a manga, as those two don't have basically nothing in common, and the first has a lot more graphic content if compared to the second.
    I'm sorry if I didn't sound clear or if I made grammar issues but English isn't my first language.

    • @dugonman8360
      @dugonman8360 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks. I've argued this before with people, how calling something a 'Shonen' is like calling something 'pg-13'. It means nothing other than who it's targeted towards and is mostly used as a term of derision and contempt moreo than anything else.

    It doesn't really have a trope name, but fans do refer to what you're describing as either "urban fantasy shonen" or "exorcism battle shonen", in which the manga revolves around an organization combating a group of demons or spirits or monsters, with the main character being half monster themself.

    • @youcantbeatk7006

      I just call them Bleach clones or the Bleach formula, but I also define the trope as being more narrow. • @ivanbackfromthecardshop8093
    @ivanbackfromthecardshop8093 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    perosonally cant really see the problem. While this is a common trope thats just because most world building premises their is going to be some group that rises to power. So an author has the choices of either making the protags ally of that group or that group being the antagonists(or making it more of an anarchy/ tons of smaller factions thing but thats somewhat more niche a scenario). When your talking about such a broad idea theirs only like 3 options theirs inevitably going to be a ton of examples for all of them meaning you can easily make this exact same argument for the opposite side as well.
    "Shounen series alway use the premise of a small group of protas against this huge group of villains that have power over the world. Just look at one piece, avatar, the seven deadly sins, tomodachi game, akame ga kill, tokyo ghoul, etc"
    i agree theirs probally a bit of a bias towards this format just because its an easier premise to make but i cant really see it at the biggest problem in shounen

    • @RoroReviewsStuff
      @RoroReviewsStuff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While you are right that there aren’t that many choices to make when it comes to the factions, it’s a matter of those factions combined with all the other stuff I talked about that makes it an issue. I don’t have an issue with factions by themselves, I have a problem with factions that just so happen to protect the world against a certain type of evil. These factions who use powers that the main character suddenly unearths or Is forced to reveal to the world. The list goes on. There’s other stuff about it that I take issue with that isn’t just the concept of factions. Hopefully my video didn’t give you the wrong impression on that and if it did I apologize for not being clear.

    Shonen has no flaws, imo, especially considering that these are stories written for teenage boys and most of them are pretty fkn deep.
    They give great rolemodels, life experiences, lessons in morality, teaching right from wrong, reminds you of the importance of communicating, etc
    New anime don't do any of that anymore. Literally just pure entertainment now.
    For example:
    The "baka MC" has been replaced by either the "pervert MC" or the "anxious MC".
    The Baka MC was a good starting point to teach lessons.
    But changing that entire dynamic to a pervert, or an anxious character, renders all of that mute.
    The pervert will focus on selfish stuff and sexual content.
    While the anxious one will deliver on a seriously depressing, gonna slit my wrists, type of story.
    Who tf do you help with this!?
    Morality has become dark gray, at best
    Right and wrong have literally been fused together
    And they give more detailed backstories to psychopathic villains, increasing fanbases for those types of characters, turning thèm into rolemodels.
    And just look how objectification made a full comeback as well.... People are literally being openly perverted anywhere and everywhere as often as they can.
    Zoomers completely destroyed what anime stands for a downgraded it to just entertainment for which you turn your brain off ...

    What chainsaw man does with denji trunk into a demon is completely different to what demon slayer does with nezuko similar story structure or not. When you simplify everything to troupes or story structure of course everything is “samey” it’s what they do with that structure that defines them and makes them stand out. Ex being that tanjiro is the mc and the main focus with nezuko being his source of motivation and love. Denji is completely different to itadori, naruto, etc.

    • @RoroReviewsStuff
      @RoroReviewsStuff  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In the video I specifically call out those differences and state that I'm not going after those shounen series. I used them to prove a point because they are popular and most people watching have probably seen them already. The problem I have with the use of this story structure is that series tend to use it whether or not it fits their tone. Gachiakuta has a wildly different tone from Demon Slayer or Chainsaw Man, yet is still insists on using the same story structure. The same is also true for Kajiki no Ryourinin, another shounen that insists on using this story structure despite having the opportunity to do something different.
      I agree that when you simplify things down unnecessarily everything starts to looks the same, but when almost every shounen shares the same superficial plot progression, I feel like this is an apt problem to call out.

    Shonen magazine and shonen sunday mostly have vastly different styles of manga. Fairy tail and inu yasha tend to be exceptions to the rules rather than the norm.
    Heres how to find out if a manga is shonen or seinan or shojo and how deep this catagorization genuinely is: read what magazine the manga was published in. If its in a shonen magazine, its shonen. If its published in a seinan magazine, congratulations! You're reading a seinan!
    Vinland saga began in a shonen magazine, shonen sunday to be precise, but was moved to a seinan not because it was too mature or violent or dark but because it was going to start being far less action packed and more philosophical and medatative.
    I'm sorry but this genuinely gets annoying to me. Its like putting signifigance in movie ratings.

It's like how a drama is defined by having a serious plot but a lack of entertainment value aside from it's plot, but the plot should be enough. However slice of life is a genre for media that lacks a story that's engaging enough to be considered a drama, lacks enough or all comedy to be considered such, lacks enough or all action to be considered such, lacks enough or all horror to be considered such, lacks enough or all romance to be considered such, and lacks enough or all eroticism to be considered porn or any of the plethora of euphemistic synonyms. Slice of life is inherently boring by design. Slice of life is for adults who find entertainment through living vicariously through fictional characters and their mundane actions. You should be ashamed to be a fan of slice of life.
