    So glad this has been posted, thank you so much for this, I was in the front row, clapping like a mad man as Mark graced his with his presence one last time, I couldn't get that image out of my head of him being raised up and being wheeled onto the stage, some people may not like this but it makes me smile as it shows marks courage and dedication to his music and fans, a true legend indeed, I love you Mark and all you music and accomplishments which are many, rest in peace hip priest, PS just want to send my love and prayers to marks family, pam and the current and past members of the fall, you all contributed to the greatest group ever! Pps sorry for rambling.

    What an amazing person. A singular character. We'll never have the likes of Mark E. Smith again. I have a bunch of old Fall albums from the early 80s & even late 70s & they're still great to listen to; just as great as if they'd come out in the past 4 years! ("No Xmas For John Quays"!!) great singer, great songwriter, great person! RIP!

    Despite his reputation as a curmudgeon, MES was a great showman in his own way. The way he'd come on last a la James Brown after the band had warmed the crowd up, and always say "Good evening we are The Fall" like Johnny Cash would say "hello i'm Johnny Cash". Even when he couldnt walk he still had that panache.

    True professional. Sad he was ill. Yes of over indulgence perhaps. Nothing much said about cause of death. But extremely sad none the less. Original and yes influencial. The Fall, the Smiths and Jazz Butcher same Indie category of originality in 1980's. Seemed to be a hit with his fans and the women he dated. Huge catalogue of songs with driving repetitive effective hooklines, ear worms that stick in your head, some menacing, others Witty never dull, love him or hate him Mark E Smith made his mark for 40 + years with the Fall. At their best when I saw them for a second time supporting U2 in 1987 at Elland Road, Leeds with Brix on Lead Guitar. Best concert I've ever been too.

      Oh didn't realise he was responsible for the industrial revolution and the rise of capitalism to drag the peasants out of the mire, not to mention the formation of scientific method. Or did you mean he wrote a good song or two?

    • @Wheresnorth4romhere
      @Wheresnorth4romhere 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      suereed A song or two? really is that how you would remember a lyrical genius dedicated to his craft, motivated by the buzz of creating and inspiring others. He wrote more than a song or two. More like an album or two at least, every year for his whole musical career which spanned 40 years. A true maverick out on his own who tore up the rule book and rewrote it. No money motivation or fame seeking. It was simply all about the music and keeping it real! People like mark e Smith don't come around very often.

    • @krasteff
      @krasteff 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Given the british audience acceptance of the Fall's works, i.e. somewhere 50 places below Jason Donovan in the charts, you are living in caves. Even Peel wasn't able to influence the british to buy their records.

    • @suereed
      @suereed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course Peel influenced people to buy The Falls records. He played their records all the time.
      He had them in session 24 times. Don't you think that made some impact?
      They were only ever going to be a cult band making that kind of racket.
      Arguably without Peels support in the early days they would have keeled over after a couple of years,
      like a thousand other punk bands of the time.

    I was there that night and I must confess that at first, I thought the wheelchair was a gag and he was going to stand up after a bit. But it soon became obvious that he
    really was unable to stand and was very ill. I could tell he was in agony during the whole show, but he was determined to go out there and give the crowd what they paid for right to the bitter end. After the gig, outside I overheard someone moaning that they felt short-changed because he was in a wheelchair. At the time I thought that was pretty mean because everyone could see he was unwell, but now I'm angry. Some people are totally ungrateful. 😠😠😠
