"Psykick Dancehall" - The Fall
January 24, 2018. It’s in the news. Mark E. Smith died, aged 60. The only guy who ever made sense of Punk music, someone wrote. True. We’ll miss him greatly.
He was kind of famous for being Mr Grumpy - as much as he was a good laugh and really nice guy when cameras were not rolling. In front of a mic he immediately turned out his trademark cynical and sarcastic self.
Please note: There is a small discrepancy with the sound in this clipping - we had dire technical problems recording that night… Thus - the „you’re the man with the problems…“
Before and after this short, awkward encounter in this video, which took place after The Fall’s gig at the off beat Night in Munich, Februar 16th in 1989, we had spent several hours talking about music, about his home in Manchester and specially the clubs there, some of which I new, because my sister used to live there for some time.
Mark was a man of the word. We had a lot of beers later that night. He seemed to like being in Germany, he knew a lot about this country’s history. I admired that, too.
After two divorces, he met Eleni Poulou in Berlin and later - I think in 1995 - married her. She is the band's last keyboard player.
With one of the titles The Fall played that night in 89, „Totally Wired“ he sure did predict the world we live in today...
May he Rest in Peace!
This, btw. is The Falls website - it’s been around for a long time: thefall.org/

That is MES when he was happy...Great clip...
"What is wrong with you?" was such a perfect question to ask Mark Smith. "I'm an alcoholic with a massive chip on his shoulder," was probably the accurate answer. RIP MES.
Didn't so much have a chip on his shoulder, he had the whole fuckin casino.
@MrWayout74 Haha! Very well balanced - a chip on both shoulders.
The older I get the more I appreciate Mark E. Smith and also understand that life is absurd.
same its because he was 300 years old at witch trials
Same 😅🎉...
"yeah, let's go over, like we really are going over there to see him"😂 pure class.
“ahh great…” 😁
Mark E Smith looks like the bloke sat in the corner of the rovers return in Corrie in 1986
He used to drink in some seriously dingy pubs Manchester I went to one or two , can’t remember the names being 10
Years ago, didn’t bump into him but the locals gave me a few stories. These pubs are as you describe, definitely spit and sawdust🍺
Just Mark asserting dominance happened all the time. I love it very much.
more like being more drunk like anyone around
Danke für die Videos. Off Beat auf Tele5 war damals für mich als Schüler Pflichtprogramm.
Bye Mark, thanks for everything
Well said Miss the man....
6:22 The Fall, Sonic Youth + Front 242 - feels like when planets align against the sun
Nice work Che. Interesting to read your comments. He was a unique individual and will be sorely missed. Thanks for the posting.
I first seen the Fall with the Cramps (about 79 or 80), Now that was a crazy show.
Mark was a really funny bastard
Great clip, thanks for posting it..
A Salford city lad that was his own man. The Fall was Mark with a fantastic spin of musicians over the years. Well done Mark!
I really like the style of your interviews. Those kind of "punk" artists naturally take pleasure in behaving badly, and obviously need interviewers who confront them with a simple, natural "What`s the matter with you?" Like children enjoying some mischief. I also find it fascinating how he (and other musicians with that so-called "punk" attitude like John Lydon or Phillip Boa) is actually trying so hard to get on a stage, get attention, be seen and validated - and after getting it, does everything he can to put people off and try to prove that he couldn`t care less. Although I think I understand why, I struggle to find it impressive or intelligent.
are you related to Phillip Boa?
@@AZ-xm2oq. 🤣😂🤣
He was probably actually very shy once off the stage and didn’t want to play the interview game so just subverted the whole process.
Mark es único y tiene un legado que ya quisieran otras bandas , mis respetos a THE FALL
Absolutamente correcto
As Mark E Smith interviews go, he was actually being pretty friendly and relaxed in that clip.
I have seen him be a lot more awkward in other interviews!
Good video. I enjoyed reading the information you gave about the recording, I do this with many of my recordings here on TH-cam and wish other people who upload rare recordings did it. I went on to watch more of your videos, such as Leonard Cohen etc, enjoyed them all, so I subscribed.
Thank you. There is more to come, stay tuned!
Great interview
CHE: "And how did the people react on the thing with the ballet, when you did that in Amsterdam?"
MES: "It's of no importance to me how they react."
I quite enjoyed both the performance and the interview. Thank you for sharing this gem!
I agree, a gem and the performance was special.
Brilliant. 'You are the man with the problems! ... We are The Fall and we are the best!'
Mark E Smith's first gig was a Supermarket Christmas Party.
That's why I look like Santa...
brilliant
I thought he was really quite decent with the German interviewer. It's only now that Mark's gone that I realise how much we've lost........
Me too.
Truly a shining light in a sea of shite
great repost
Mark was a bit hammered hey...Love it🤟🏽
Every encounter with Mark E. Smith was an awkward one.
RIP GOOD SIR!
Reminds me of Keith Moon: "you're the one with the problems"
""My friends call me Keith, you can call me Bill""
This is Mark E Smith in a relatively good mood .
He was, we got totally smashed at the after show party... Laught our heads off watching certain sections of that show. Most loveable troll ever; R.I.P. my friend!
Hawkwind had Stacia, so The Fall Ellen ! Hmmm would've like to hear The Fall to Silver Machine !
Same here man, what a notion
Never stood on ceremony, didn't give a fuck about others opinion. Try it people! RIP to a legend.
Residents visuals and music among the intro bits
Manchester's Velvet Underground.
RIP
The problem with Mark was he wanted to be successful and yet he didn’t, with success comes Mark with an axe to cut it all down. A great artist but very much a paradox.
Yeah I agree, I feel the same way about Zappa’s music - a gifted composer who deliberately challenged the listener’s expectations. Who was tired of the general audience’s tastes and desires. Of course, this becomes a problem when millions of people respond positively to having their expectations subverted - it becomes impossible to subvert their expectations any further.
Same as Syd Barrett.
Too funny 😂
MES will live on in music
I think the most entertaining characters in rock are usually the ones you'd least want to invite round for dinner!!
Nope. Not with this guy. Off camera he was witty, very smart and charming and generally a very nice guy to be (and drink) with.
@@chemento0712 Nice to know, seeing as I am a Fall fan.
is the tiny bit of music at the end from dEUS?
Nope, it's Philip Boa and his band starting their second set of the evening...
I did mean the music for your ident of the man looking at the computer with the magnifying glass.
Oh that. That's just some kind of noise that comes along with iMovie library of sounds.
He was so fucking honest, real, fresh and uncontrollable... punk!
CHE guevara was alive in 1989??
F**K man. I live in the UK, in the north east. On 23rd October 2017, which happens to be my birthday, The Fall were playing in Newcastle. I couldn't go because I was ill. I knew Mark was ill too and, I said to my husband: "F**K man, that'll be the last time The Fall will play Newcastle because, looking at Mark - bloated with illness and sat in a wheelchair - I bet he's going to die soon, I've just got a feeling. And look what's happened. Well, even though Mark said he didn't believe in G-d, I know he's gone straight to heaven. All the genuine truth speakers do. So bloody well done Mark. There'll never be another one like you... Rest In Paradise mate xxx
God's in for a real earful, if that's so.
Totally agree . only saw the fall 3 times live but I'm glad I did!
Haha quality
ill tell you whats awkward.. the interviewers jacket ... wtf ?
Brix left Mark after his affair with the ballet dancer, going from a genius guitarist to a ballet dancer in a post punk krautrock influenced group is like trading Thierry Henry for Francis Jeffers; so fair play for MES having a scowl on his face. The ballet, IAKO, was set to be a critical and commercial success from the Edinburgh and Islington theatre performances maybe it’d have been the 80s Book of Mormon or wicked!!!!
LOL. No.
Yet, but, she was an irritating shit.
He's on speed or MDMA for sure. Godspeed, Mark.
atarirob He didn’t like mdma he thought it was shit
Yep - he hated it, saying it felt like a speedy antidepressant. Mind you, this is from the guy who tried heroin "just to be social", and took amphetamine to relax and help him sleep, so I think his brain chemistry was a bit fucked.
He moved to Edinburgh in the 90s to get away from the Manchester baggy scene. He thought MDA was a hypocritical drug.
😂😂
Spät aber gerne: Merci!
MES ... at last he won't have to care about revolution anymore ... never4get
1971 NHS freebies for Yanks. Me, i am tight Latd.
He shat on liberalism from a great height. For that, I'll preserve the right to continue listening to The Fall long after the others have proven themselves failures and frauds.
You don't have to be wierd to be wired.
Lol,
Speeds one hellva drug
Mark E. Smith and John Lydon are what the World needs more of, If that makes sense.
It absolutely freaking does.
Tyt ti ti toally wired...
It's really rude to speak a language, in front of someone who doesn't speak it. It looks like this incredibly 80s bloke, and the German public, were conspiring to take this piss out of Mark.
Anyway what was the lineup here? I can't remember Fall members well enough to pick them out of a blurry German VHS. Ta for the recording though, Chemento.
If I were an interviewer I'd make it my responsibility to at least listen to a bit of the band's music, and find out the first thing about them, before I interviewed them. Of course that wouldn't help with MES if he's in a mood, or too pissed. I think he'd get mortal as an insult to interviewers he didn't like, challenge them to make some sense, and write an article, about Mark just sitting there babbling and repeatedly pissing his trousers.
The uninterviewable!
Actually we got along really well - off camera. The day before we had a real splendid night in Munich's clubs. I guess he was just pissed at something/someone. I'm kind of glad I could save this VHS copy for the future...
Thanx for this i still hate Deutchland though!!!
So much you don't know how to spell it? Sun Tzu: Know Thy Enemies ;-)
@@chemento0712 - Ha ha, well put!
:-)
the guy doing the the interview was rude and aggressive..body language and the way he kept thrusting the mike into Mark E's face... as if he was more important ..what happened to him
The guy doing the interview? That's me. It was very noisy in the hall the acustic was s***, and as mentioned in the description (you might wanna read before posting allegations), we had sound problems (which Mark also mentions, because we were talking about it off cam: "You're the man with the problems...") and probably the wrong kind of mics (besides, those weren't as good as the ones today).
What happened to me? Well, I'm looking forward to my retirement after almost 45 very successful years in the biz. One of the reasons I'm putting these clips up here, now that I have free time, scrubbing thru my archives.
fair play!
That makes sense, he was being friendly.
Thanks for posting Che. Much appreciated and I think you handled Mark well as I’ve seen other interviews worse off. I kinda think he liked you :)
Smith drunk and not exactly sharp here...kind of embarrassing.
No way lol!
@@Nickpaintbrush
You're silly.
Ha ha ha ! "What" ? Knob interviewer.
Musically awful, but entertaining.. I guess.
