  • Alison Desir, athletic activist and counselor, blurs the line between mind and body through the integration of two of her passions: community based mental health and running. Mayim and Alison examine how running has fit into each other’s lives and how it has provided a meaningful coping mechanism to deal with life’s many stressors. Alison ends her segment with an amazing discussion on the black experience in the United States and how empowering exercise can be for black and brown communities!

Wow! I love Alison and her journey. I ran the Toronto marathon, and lived to tell about it...which was my goal, and hardly ever had to think about what I would wear, where I would run or what I would do should I meet a police officer during my training. Alison’s description of running black was not shocking to me but it certainly did highlight the sad differences in our experience of marathon preparation.

I think running really helps with staying in good shape and i’m not just talking about physical shape but also mentally 😊. I see it in my dad, he turned 89 in February and running does that for him. One time he had to stop for a while because he had a surgery and that month was hell for him. Going for a run 6 days a week it’s therapeutic for my dad, and still goes to 5k and 10k competitions💖

I broke vertebrae during a restraint with a client in the hospital, and since then I have had a hard time with physical fitness. It took many years to get to the point I am. However, I still wish my body would just bounce back. As women we hold ourselves to this ridiculous standard. Great episode.
