Habs needed a 1st or 2nd line center. That was their top priority. They were going to pick Shane. The only reason they chose Slafkovsky instead is because they made the deal in secret for Dach. They did what was best for the team, they got a winger for their top line and a 2nd line center. All they gave up was Romanov, although he is good he is only a 3rd pairing guy in their core of D men. Habs win this draft and the trade in a huge way. Hughes is a wizard. Shane Wright will be a monster and I'm sad they didn't take him but bidness is bidness. Cheers

I honestly would've prefered if they drafted Wright and still made the deal for the 13th overall pick and kept it. I'm not too keen on Kirby Dach. Yea he's young and the potential is still there but I'm not sure if he'll ever reach it. There is a reason why the Blackhawks had no problem trading him away. They see something in him that Hughes and the Canadiens haven't yet. They could've drafted Kemell, or Lekkerimaki if they still happened to be available at that point which would've still given them a young winger to develop. Do they have the size? No but there is always next year when it comes to drafting that big power forward they want. Having Wright/Suzuki at 1 and 2 would've set them up for years in the Top 6. I love Suzuki but I see him more as a 2nd line Center more than a first.

Montreal is still gonna be near the bottom next year probably and they’re throwing their pick into the draft lottery, it isn’t impossible that they win one of them again (The only rules that they can’t win it more than twice in five years). If this situation were to happen they would much rather Slaf because what are you gonna do if you get Suzuki, Wright and One of those Centres? (For example I’m using Adam Fantilli)
It would be much better to have

Mark my words, Wright will light up the league. Unfortunately, Habs picked a boom/bust winger over a safer pick with Wright. If it wasn’t for the Dach trade, we would’ve picked Wright, a perfect 2C, and continue the proper rebuild. Dach has been underperforming, almost a bust a this point, feels like this was probably the first mistake as a GM for Kent Hughes.

Wright wasn’t the safe pick, he wasn’t drafted first because he doesn’t have the same work ethic, and doesn’t exactly like defending. The reports said this....

Shane did really bad in his interviews and blamed his teammates for his lack of intensity this year. He wouldn’t have been able to handle the mtl media with that attitude. As for Slafkovsky, he probably isn’t the best right now, but time will tell if it was a good decision. imo, it is, he’s a big forward with lots of pride and intensity and I think he’ll be great with Caufield and Suzuki.

If Montreal can get a top 5 pick next year then I don’t think they will because 4 of 5 are centres and all of them would’ve gone over Wright this year.
It would be much better to have
      Slafkovsky-Suzuki/Fantilli-Caufield
      ?-Suzuki/Fantilli-?
      Then
      ?-Suzuki/Wright/Fantilli-Caufield
      ?-Suzuki/Wright/Fantilli-?
      ?-Suzuki/Wright/Fantilli-?
