@@amsro9094 As a goalie, if you're not Hasek, Roy, or Brodeur, you're easily replaceable. On a greatly built team, they only have to be decent during the regular season. Once in the playoffs, any goaltenders can go on a heater and make the difference. Look at all the champions in the last 50 years. You don't need a star goalie to win it all.

@@axlcell No but when a goalie is breaking his back to make great saves it helps a lot, let’s not underestimate the tendies here, sure a good team in front helps with the confidence but you still need a goalie who has that drive to stretch the extra limb and make that goal saving save, look at Price, Vasy, Bob, Rinne, Fleury, Rask etc. Some who never won a cup but who were a difference maker for a deep playoff dive

Very similar trade to the Monahan one. Montreal is getting Laine at 2 years for a high cap hit that really dosen't matter as we are still rebuilding. It really won't affect us. Just like the Monahan 6 million contract when we got him. I think Laine will stay for 2 years. Get resigned at like 3x6.5 and get flipped. Which would result in us having Laine for 2 years. Whatever he could fetch and basically a late first for a bottom 2 defenseman. Major win. Same trade. Less risk. More reward.

Games will be fire but putting Laine and Matthews in the same sentence wore itself out the first time I saw it. Now years later Ovechkin is actually going to beat Gretzky goal record in 2 years and Matthews doesn't just have way more goals than ovechkin at the same age in their careers but Matthews just came off if 69 goals and he did 45% more of those goals on 5vs5. Can Laine pot 30? Let's start there. Personally I think Laine can pot 35-40 but I'm not sold.

Hey man. Great video. I wanna say as a Habs fan. The reason we really have that goal scoring believe in Caufield is because he kinda already proved he can be that. His rookie year without the Ducharme 4th line games paced for over 40 goals. And then the next year was pacing for 50 for a lot of the year. And then this year. Scored 28 goals on 8% shooting. Thats really to me just screaming 50 if he is shooting at the 15%-20% we know he could.

Finnish interest is obviously on Laine, but also on Oliver Kapanen from the Kapanen hockey clan. He's playing in Swedish league next season in Timrå IK, where his father Kimmo is an sporting director and the former Panthers captain Olli Jokinen is coaching. All are basically from the same city, Kuopio, although Oliver was borm in Timrå. Also his father Kimmo played hockey as a goalie. Oliver's uncle is Sami Kapanen and cousin is Sami's son Kasperi Kapanen, who both have played in NHL. Kasperi plays in St. Louis Blues. And also grandpa Hannu played and then coached. He played on a national team level. The local team in Kuopio is Kalpa, in which all of them have played or coached at some point. One of the club owners is Kimmo Timonen. who won the Stanley Cup in Blackhawks in 2015.

Don't underestimate the way Laine will respond to being a valued "team-member," and being coached by MSL. That illusive thing winning hockey teams have -- chemistry -- is just well-combined character.
I predict 45 goals for Patrick this year, and improved results for Nick, Juraj, Cole, etc.

I have a question for Hockey fans. If Hutson plays solid and has 30+ points and Laine scores 40+ goals. Are the Habs in the playoffs? That sounds like an elite top 6 when healthy with a solid top 4 and underrated goaltending. And also compared to the last couple of seasons a much better 3rd line.

Habs fan here… we’re in good shape but that’s a big IF.. the best we can realistically hope for this year is a shot at a wild card spot, that being said, the rebuild is nearing its zenith, give us a year or two and I truly think we will be a contender depending on how well these guys play together and if St. Louis can make it all work

To get into the Playoffs, ideally the team should be at least +20 in GF vs GA. Habs were at -63 so they have 83 goals to makeup. Let’s say +30 to Laine, +Dach/-Monahan is a wash, +10 and +10 improvement for Caufield and Slaf, and +15 for an improved defense, that’s a net +65 so I think they are a bubble team but will miss the playoffs.
Edit: Hutson getting 30 pts doesn’t move the needle. If he gets 50-60 pts, then I would say that swings the goal differential by another +20 and maybe the Habs make the playoffs with a Calder nominee on their blue line.

You seem to have missed the point that the line of CC-Suzuki-Slaf was a minus last year, if they are allowing more goals than they are scoring they are still going backwards. CC and Suzuki when together 5 on 5 have been a minus no matter who the 3rd player is, The answer is to split them up and give more size insulation to CC, a line of CC-Dach-Slaf comes to mind. The line of CC-Dach-Monahan seemed to have done well. This leaves Suzuki, who is a #1 center, to center Laine. This obsession with putting together a line that is a minus needs to stop if the Habs are wanting to make the playoffs. Put them together on the PP, but not 5 on 5.

I would expect that MTL will want to treat Laine like a $8M guy, and give him first look at the top line, and pp. If he doesn't have 15P by 20 games, then you can start to move him onto the second line, but if you want to see if he still has it, then you need to give him the wheel.

A 2nd round pick alone for Harris was a good trade, getting Laine as a throw in makes it an amazing trade. It's a no-lose situation. Montreal has two years on his current contract to evaluate and can either extend him at that time or let him go to FA. There's no pressure since Montreal are still two seasons away from possibly being a playoff team. In the 22/23 season Caufield was on pace for a 48-goal season, so it is possible that he can reach 50. Once Demidov, Beck, Reinbacher, Mailloux and Fowler join the team in the future this team is going to be scary.

@@adamsteele6148It doesn't matter. It's a 2 year deal so they have options. After the fact they also got a 2nd.
      A) he does wonders after a year: they can shop him if their not hearing numbers he wants to be resigned
      B) he does wonders: he loves MTL and does a team discount for believing in him
      C) he's alright, and either way you mostly have same options just less reward
      D) he's doneskies: so you either move onbor get whatever you can get.
      Why?
Because they have the time and Cao space to do it. Their window isn't open yet.

Montréal media aren’t any more brutal than in other NHL cities; it’s the level of attention that’s being paid to the the team by fans and media and the expectations that come with being the winningest franchise in NHL history that set it apart. It’s pretty simple really, if a player is perceived as a hard worker they are going to be appreciated by both media and fans. Of course, players are expected to play up to their potential and in accordance with how much they are getting paid. That’s why apart from skills, the new Habs management puts an emphasis on drafting players who have an excellent work ethic and who they perceive as being confident and mature.
