    Some people hate this episode but I loved it, and its something they teased and hinted towards since season 1

    I like that you noticed that Ted seemed worried about Beard. This episode is a bit all over the place, but we actually do take a few things away. I saw once some people talking about Ted's behavior and patterns and I think it is a nice thing to point out.
    Ted has A LOT of routines put up with the people he loves/cares about. You see he has his lunches with Higgins set up very early on, the famous Biscuits with the Boss, movie night (or pillow fight) with the team, his facetime calls with his son, he has the Sandwich exchange with Beard and he sets up the coffee rotation with the coaches and knowing how his dad died and how he feels about it, it makes sense. He is making sure the people around him know they will be missed by at least someone. And he sets up these events to remind them that they have plans together and there are things worth living for.
    In this scene with Beard, he notices Beard is off, so he reminds him that it's his turn to bring the coffee the next morning, as a way to remind him that they have plans and please, if you are feeling bad, I am here and let's talk, but don't forget that you matter to me and we have things to do. It is a nice touch, as someone who has mental health issues and also studies mental health, these fresh views are important to break the stigma and the wrong views people have of these disorders and the behavior they result in. Sometimes we don't wanna leave the bed and we feel worthless and unlovable and it is nice to be reminded that we make a difference in someone's life.

    Quick note on the geography the man City match was played at Wembley which is in London as it was an FA Cup semi final it would be played there. (Not even a football fan that's how pervasive it is in the UK I've absorbed that through osmosis)

    It's a full homage to one of Scorsese's less-known movies, After Hours. So many of the scenes are perfectly recreated. I absolutely love the way Beard is that tropey man of mystery who knows everything and has been everywhere.

    FYI the breakdown of scenes in this ep is an homage to the Scorcese film "After Hours"

      Which itself is an homage and parallel to James Joyce's Ulysses... which is an homage and parallel to Homer's Odyssey. The episode parallels Scorsese's "After Hours" pretty well, and much of the structure and style (like the cinematography) are from the film.

    This is the weird Beard episode and there are a ton of metaphors in it that I still don't understand! (the moon, the keys etc).Its ok I love the show so that if I see the episode often enough I will eventually get it! I absolutely love the boys in the bar at Nelson Road, such a great scene! My thought is that they cannot afford to go to the games so this is a super special night for them. Looking forward to the last few episodes!

    • @thatgirlwearingglasses4133

      I don’t think it even needs to be that the boys can’t afford to go (which is prob true since they never do). I think even if you can go to view it, if you are an avid fan, there is nothing like actually being able to go and play on the field with your friends.
      Also, I love how you’re like, I don’t even get all of this episode but that’s ok, I’ll get it one day”. I just like how ok you are with not understanding something you like and how are sure you will understand it someday so you’re not being hard on yourself and trying to cook up any nonsense to appear like you get it! Keep that up? It’s great! 👍

    Yeah the match was in London, FA Cup semifinals are all at Wembley these days. Years ago they used to be moved around the country depending on the geography of the clubs and a neutral venue.
    The modern wembley stadium was such a financial catastrophe that all significant games in the FA calendar had to be played there to make up revenue.
    The giant Blue Moon is a ManCity thing, their club song is Blue Moon.

    From what I've read, Apple TV was surprised by how successful Ted Lasso was in S1, so they asked for two more episodes for the second season. But Sudeikis & co. had already written the story arc for S2. So they did the Xmas episode and this one 'off the cuff' to fulfill the contract. I absolutely love the two. You mentioned in a previous reaction that you wondered who was doing the writing? So many of the people actually *in* it. Suedikis (Ted), Brett Goldstine (Roy f'ing Kent), Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard!), and even Phoebe Walsh (believe it or not..she plays Jane). There are three or four other talented writers that put words in actors' mouths..but as a retired TV professional in the US - I absolutely cannot recall another show where so many folks from the "writers' room" also go on the soundstage.
    Hope this gives you a laugh..the Xmas episode was originally released in August. Left many of us 'scratching our heads'. Cheers, and I'm so stoked you're enjoying it! Your reactions remind me of the first time I ever saw the show. Thanks.

      @Vierka Chora , could I suggest you watch the Xmas episode again? Especially the parts considering the Higgins family's appeal to the players. Recall that when Higgins first mentions it, he says that the most players he's ever had for the celebration was two. I really enjoyed that part of it, when so many players showed up. One planet, one people. As far as the "Santa" crap goes..one little English kid having a fantasy doesn't bother me that much.

    I feel like a lot of people overlook the line Beard says about living in a simulation, and this episode is meant to explore the world as it appears to Beard. Living a night of his life helps us see why he is like he is, why he acts how he acts, and so on. This whole episode plays out like a dream or an acid trip, or if you will, a simulation...

    I don’t think the universe was punishing Beard. It didn’t want him to go home. The universe wanted him to find Jane. If the key hadn’t have broken then he’d be home, in bed.
    Despite what many people think .. Jane and Beard were made for each other. Remember, there is someone out there for everyone. ❤

    I still can’t decide whether or not I like this episode! As others have mentioned, this one and the Christmas episode were added after the series was written so they had to do something that didn’t alter the story arc. Only 3 episodes to go. Loved your reactions to this show

    How about the fact that there's been three different renditions of "Blue Moon" in the last two episodes, including of course the Oasis version, in order to add insult to Richmond's defeat and, THEN, at the end of Beard After Night, when everything settled down, we finally hear some Blur?

    Just starting watching your reaction but since no one else has mentioned I believe this heavily references an early Scorcese film, might be Mean Street's. At first I was put off by this ep but as a complimentary piece it is interesting for sure.

    Watched it through your eyes and yep, still don't like it. I mean it's an homage to After Hours and Wizard of Oz (following the yellow brick road), but it just feels off to me. I love Beard. I love how he listens and is enigmatic. I hate that he is stuck in a toxic, borderline emotionally abusive relationship (I don't take jobs about suicide lightly) and with all that I don't feel like we learned anything new. Even the Christmas episode gave us forward movement plot points (Rebecca and her love of children, Ted's fatherhood issues, a bit of a rescue theme between the two of them, Keeley &Roy, etc.) So it's a rare miss for me. Next episode is really good.

  • @laurelf.2057
    @laurelf.2057 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is pretty easily my least favorite episode of the series so far, I'd say. I don't feel like we learned much about Beard, and it's such a massive momentum shift from the previous episode, and not in a good way. I think there were many better directions they could have and should have gone post-Man City. Also quite dark that Jamie's dad is an attempted murderer :O

    • @AdamfromFWCI
      @AdamfromFWCI  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree. I was hoping for something with Beards past, maybe how he met Ted or something

    • @laurelf.2057

      @@AdamfromFWCI Likewise. I guess I just didn't Get It, but for us to spend an entire episode out of an already short season on Beard's night out and all that really happens is Beard has some insecurities and his relationship with Jane is extremely toxic (which we already knew), it feels like such a waste. I'd much rather have, as you said, get some actual information on him. Or have it not focused only on Beard and deal more with the aftermath of the locker room scene and how that affected everyone.
      Ah, well. The next episode is really good!

      @@laurelf.2057 Yeah I'm not a fan of this episode either. The tone is really strange compared to the other episodes.

    • @laurelf.2057
      @laurelf.2057 ปีที่แล้ว

      @vierkachora7334 I know those two episodes were added after the fact. But just because the showrunners didn't want them to advance the main plot doesn't mean they couldn't still flesh things out.
      The Christmas episode was a fluff episode, which is fine.But the Beard episode should have been way more and/or different than it was coming on the heels of Man City. None of what was in the Beard episode was new or expanded information. We already knew Beard was a weird guy who gets into shenanigans, we already knew Jane was a controlling, frankly abusive girlfriend, and we already knew James was a violent lunatic.
      I know a lot of people really like this episode, which is fine. Not everyone has to share my opinion (I certainly have plenty of those that go against the grain). But from where I'm standing, they really missed the mark with this one and wasted a prime opportunity.

    • @laurelf.2057
      @laurelf.2057 ปีที่แล้ว

      @vierkachora7334 You thought James sat at home doing nothing? Really? The same James who abandoned Jamie and his mom as a baby, inserted himself into his life as soon as he realized Jamie could give him clout, tried to shame and beat (literally) every ounce of kindness out of Jamie, and physically and mentally abused him for a decade? You thought that man just goes home and thinks about football? James being fully ready to commit murder was a step farther than I'd expected, but everything else was completely unsurprising to me.
      Similar concept goes for Beard. No we weren't shown everything from his life, but we could extrapolate. Nothing in the Beard episode provided any revelations to me or things that couldn't have already been guessed from the information we had already.
      Your take on Jane is kinda yikes. She's a horrible person and, yes, abusive. Not in the same way as James, but she's manipulative, so jealous she stalks Keeley to ask if Beard and Ted are messing around, throws his keys in the river, controls what he does with his phone, tells Beard she's going to go hang out with her ex-boyfriend the underwear model for no reason other than to screw with Beard's head, she texts him dozens of times in quick succession, she makes him call her at specific times, and so on. It's a supremely awful relationship, and she's the cause.
      I disagree that the Christmas episode makes other cultures look inferior, but I'm not going to expend energy going to bat for it because it annoys me in other ways.
      But clearly we're not going to agree on any of this, so I'm not going to continue this conversation.
