    The European Super League was announced out of the blue in April 2021 as a competition between some of Europe's largest, most popular clubs (6 from England, 3 from Spain, 3 from Italy). The teams involved in it would no longer be competing in the Champions League and Europa League, which are typically the only ways you'd see most of these teams play each other (outside of playing in their own domestic leagues). There had been an announcement of other teams possibly being able to earn their way in to the league, but the 12 founding teams would always be in no matter how good or bad they were (more of an American sports league way of thinking, which 3 of the owners of Super League teams are American) while other teams could be relegated. The amount of money the Super League was estimated to generate for each of the 12 teams was an absurd amount, and by removing the most popular teams from the Champions League and Europa League, effectively kill those competitions and also widen the gap even further between the rich and poor teams. As Rebecca pointed out, the cost of admission to the games would increase as well (because why make some money when you can make more, right?) which would price out the average fan from attending the Super League matches.
    This announcement was immediately received with near universal hate and vitriol from fans, media, UEFA, and all the domestic leagues/organizations. Basically everybody outside of the greedy owners of the 12 clubs. Even some of the players and managers from those 12 teams spoke out saying it was a terrible idea. The domestic associations threatened to remove the Super League teams from their domestic leagues (Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A), and UEFA came down saying any players from the Super League teams would be ineligible to compete for their national teams (i.e.; no World Cup for them). A couple days later, the Super League teams withdrew. I don't think they expected as much backlash as they got, and figured most people would be on board some of the biggest clubs playing each other every year without earning their way into it through domestic competition. There's still slight rumblings of the Super League trying to be reorganized, but the damage from this makes it most like irreparable.
    Also the Russian owner being excused was a nod to former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who was one of the owners involved in the Super League. In 2022, he sold Chelsea due to the ongoing situation with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Some people believe he may have been forced to sell by pressure from the Premier League, other owners, the UK, or a combination of outside factors

    As a football fan, I loved Rebecca's speech about a Super League taking away from all the fans that funnel all their money into their team. She brought up a great point of just because they own the clubs, doesn't mean they own the club. At the end of the day, us fans make the club what it is

      Also, if you notice, back when Nate was slowly turning bad. The moment his transition to bad becomes official you hear a violin playing and it abruptly stops. I think it's also out of tune.
      And Nate playing the violin in this scene shows his transition back into his old, kind self. The kind melody was perfect. But what made it all complete, was when Nate's dad walks in and apologizes to Nate. The true closer Nate needed.

    Between Jamie wearing 24 for Sam, asking Sam twice if he was ok, and gifting Roy his old world cup jersey hes definitely become my favorite character.
    Add in evil Dani Rojas (Rani Dojas?), Nates redemption arc that includes the talk with his dad and Rebecca denying Rupert and this was one great episode.

    I honestly don't blame Beard for being as hard on Nate as he is. Ted is his best friend and has been nothing but encouraging and supportive to basically everyone in that club. Beard is (maybe) the only one who sees that Ted is somewhat expected to be everything to everyone and he doesn't get a lot of credit for it. Everyone loves him, of course, but it's considered 'Ted being Ted' as opposed to major emotional labor. So for Nate to weaponize Ted's mental health struggles, the history of which Beard is probably aware of, and STILL feel entitled to that love and attention, is...audacious. We, the audience, know Nate is making moves to take responsibility for his actions, but Beard is thinking "yeah, sorry screwing over the person who put you in a position to even be considered for the West Ham United head coach position, didn't work out."

    • @AdamfromFWCI
      @AdamfromFWCI  ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like Jane is a bad influence on Beard. That vengeful, punishing, punching down mentality is the opposite of what Ted would want or do, and Jane seems very involved in this celebration of another man's downfall.

      I was rewatching this and I noticed the same thing. What bothers me is that in S02 she doesn't seem to know who Ted is.
      That either means her casting was a mistake or it shows how stupidly naive Americans are about football.

    • @bereasonable8018
      @bereasonable8018 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@woltervandenberg admittedly we are naive about a lot of things but in this case I’m going to defend the writing. Roy’s sis is an emergency room doctor who regularly saves lives. Her brother is an elite athlete in a sport where the teams often hire and fire coaches and trade teammates. I don’t expect her to remember everyone of them that he has worked with. And especially because Roy doesn’t seem like the sort of person who used to go to her to chat about his job. Also, maybe she just doesn’t care about the sport enough to look it up.

      I dont agree with your view on Nate's dad, Its hard to a immigrant parent specially if you are coming from Indian Subcontinent with extremely rich culture, tradition and family values and then always be a second class citizen under shadow just for a better future for your kids you tend to get a bit tough and even though they are born here kids from such families also feel it all their life so they do understand their parents feelings sooner or later like Nate not just go cut contacts like society without any family values do. The Polish joke alluded to in this episode, "Mr. Shelby" in the last episode. Even when she first warmed up to him over baklava and accepted his date, she seemed to enjoy seeing him a little uncomfortable. @20:00 the super league was a pitched as European Football with a franchise model (ala American Sports). They wanted to get rid of Promotion relegation so the owners investments are protected - there's a massive drop in revenue since distribution and tv rights from lower leagues arent as lucrative as the top leagues. Its one of the reasons why several MLS clubs are highly rated, in a financial way, since MLS operates in a franchise model even if you are bottom of the league you're still able to make profit compared to being in the NSL. Florentino Perez (Real Madrid owner) was the architect but saw that the PL league was overspending on player acquisitions - turning the rest of the world into a Farmers League. The one thing these super leagues didnt address is pay structure. In the American Sports model there are salary caps and complex player payment schedules to make the league balanced - Perez's Super league forgets this and would balloon player payments and would basically have an unbalanced league structure.
    One solution to protect these investments would be what MLS did with Apple and find a streaming partner for all games in lower divisions. It would protect some value and provide a better fan experience to these teams with a smaller fan base - look what it did to Wrexham.

    My prediction for Sam's story: There will be coup in Ghana which will dethrone Akufo. Something has to take this guy down. I'm a little scared for Rebecca and how he'll retaliate for her squashing the Super league.

    Dear, you will never be able to understand the relationship between a immigrant parents and kids born and grew up in immigrated country is like. One accepts to be under shadow as second class citizen and another one to be denial of that and logging head with eachother.

      Your totally right. I lived with a Polish family for a while in my teens, I got kind of addopted into their Polish community and I saw some very complicated relationships between my friends and their parents.
      And I'm sure for Pakistan immigrants in the UK it's even more intense.
      Thankyou for sharing your thoughts with me

    A couple of years back they tried the super league thing. Most of the big clubs signed up for it, including all the big English ones. The fans went nuts, the English clubs withdrew but the Real Madrid's and Juventus of the world are desperate for a slice of the premier league money, so they still want it. The premier League is the super league and the European giants are struggling to compete financially, they're desperate for the super league to succeed and I think are still signed up for it?

      Man City now 3-0 up on Real Madrid. They've got nothing. I rest my case.

    To be honest, this episode was really uneven to me. I loved Rebecca and her arc seems complete, and her speech shows how much she's grown. A little on the nose, but considering how much other storylines seemed to wander and not go anywhere, I will take on the nose. But to be honest, I hated Nate's Dad's speech. It felt unearned, trite, schlockey, out of left field. (Maybe I'm taking it too personally; as someone with a similar abusive father, I found it pretty insulting and cheesy.) There's no evidence he EVER thought of Nate as a genius, but suddenly it's sobs and saccharine lines about his son's happiness? That was a total 180 from his shown characterization. I loved Nate's note to Will but to be honest . . . that was the actual start of his redemption and should have happened like four episodes ago, at least. Redemption is external. Redemption is work. It needs to be shown and earned. It's not a feeling. I'm sorry, I absolutely HATE everything leading up to it. All of it. He went from absolutely vicious last year to totally de-fanged this season, to sort of stalking Jade, who never showed ANY interest in him before AND had a totally deadpan thing that worked FINE for a minor villain but not at ALL for . . . whatever this is, and then went DIRECTLY to "I like when you smile because you're my boyfriend uwuwuwuwu," which is like, omg, incel city, he got "changed" because a girl was nice to him, I'm sorry, I know they didn't mean to paint it that way, but because they made literally all of his changes internal, that's what it looks like. I just hate this entire storyline. I'm sorry, I'm going way off. I know a lot of people love it. Anyway. I did think the long bits were too long and again, too internal. Nate in bed and Keely moping were not things that moved anything forward and were entirely too passive and static for characters who used to be interesting and dynamic, and took up too much time from other plots. I don't know, the writing has just been all over the place this season. I actually loved a lot of this episode, but I think that makes me even saltier about the bits I didn't like, because there's just such a contrast between a character that does something and a character that . . . doesn't, and lets things happen to them. I just wish they had been edited better and made more tight by a showrunner who understood how to get an overarching story across a whole season.
