    One VERY important note to make considering the release date of this video: the 2019+ SV650 has switched to 4 piston fixed calipers, a huge improvement from the 2 piston sliding calipers, for the front brakes. The master cylinder has also been changed. I can't find much info on the master cylinder to say if it's an improvement or not, I can only say that it's different.
    Small points that I want to make about the video, some of which are strictly personal preference. I've got about 60000+ miles on the SV650/Gladius/V-Strom 650 and only 50 miles at best on the MT07/XSR700
    Power: The SV650 is definitely weaker at anything but the very top end but this is a double-edged sword. It's a very linear increase in power all of the way up to the top whereas the MT07 hits peak power much sooner, then it feels like it falls flat on its face relative to the rest of the rev range. The extra ~30cc displacement on the MT07 was definitely not for top end power
    Weight: The SV650 is definitely heavier but as someone who is 6'5" and 240 pounds, I enjoy the heavier weight of the SV650. More steering input is required but it helps to keep a more planted feel in a corner and on the highway.
    Suspension: Before anyone asks, I understand both bikes are highly undersprung/underdamped for me in the first place. Every bike I ride will be. This comparison is *mostly* relative to each other. The MT07 is definitely better at absorbing bumps but that's because it feels like riding a motorized pogo stick. The SV650 feels MUCH more composed on the street whereas the MT07 feels like it's just jumping around even 1-2 seconds after a bump. Leaning over in a corner is definitely not as comfortable on the MT07. It's not budget like either bike, but the Street Triple is an example of a bike in this displacement range which feels great in corners.
    Sound: The MT07 has a better sound, hands down. They have effectively the same firing order, there's just something about the MT sound over the SV sound
    Vibration: My first thought upon starting up the MT07 for the first time was "wow, I can literally feel the counter-balancer." Not enjoyable to me but that's strongly from my personal experience
    Workability: I haven't worked on the MT07 but I'd imagine valve checks are definitely a strong plus for the MT. I've done a few for the SV and they're always a pain, same goes with spark plug changes. MR8E-9 plugs are also stupid expensive/uncommon... Ask me how I know

    You make a very valid point about the reliability of Yamaha motorcycles generally as a brand, however the SV650, in particular their 645cc V-Twin, has a very strong reliability reputation. That engine is about as close to 'bulletproof' as bike engines get.
    Plus are you sure you looked properly at the aftermarket for SV650 'upgrades'? They have a massive aftermarket considering how many of them are raced etc, not to mention how long they have been around!

    I own an SV650a but have also ridden an MT-07 although that was only for the day when i rented one. I see the MT as a quick thrill bike because it felt really quick because of it's powerful motor and light weight, but it didn't feel well made and solid. I felt it had some bad points like a super grabby front brake and a hot engine where the fan would cut in at every standstill. The SV is more solid, old school and the engine is a rumbly throbby beaut that has good pull down low plus a bit extra at 4500 rpm. It feels well made, mine has done 55,000km and still comes up looking like new. Oh, my SV is super jerky in the low gears around town, that's it's worst point.

    SV 650 has been the top mid weight bike in over 20 years, I commuted on a 1999 SV650S with carburetors and that was best fun I had on two wheels, clocking in over 50 000km in the two years I owned it. I sold the bike with almost 90 000km to buy my dream bike the VFR800 6TH Gen VTEC. I still miss my SV.

    Having ridden the 2020 Mt07 first impressions are it's light, and man what a punchy engine, however that's pretty much I can say about the bike. The suspension is terrible, feels like a cheap made bike, the gearbox is far from smooth clunky and industrial, the headlight is yellow halogen, which is a big let down for a 2020 bike, the switches and controls are very ordinary, I know it's a budget bike and priced competitively though. I ride the 2019 Cb500f, now it's obviously less powerful but jumping back to my Honda what a difference, its more planted, brakes are better, gearbox is better, maybe due to slipper clutch assist, just feels more premium quality than the Mt. I can't compare with SV650 I've not ridden one, will try it out as well soon. Great presentation congrats 👍👍

    I see the SV still needs an Arrow header and ECU flash to remove the restrictions.
    Nice review. I would have also included a category rating for "Switchgear/controls" because I know Yamaha has designed garbage in this category since 2014. Same switches used on MT-07, MT-09, Tracer 700, Tracer 900 (non-GT). Also it seems to me the less button pushing is necessary to view the most relevant information on the instrument display, the better. And, are those buttons hard to access or push with gloves. Also throttle tube (rattles, feels like it's on ice), clutch and brake levers, etc.
    As underpowered and buzzy as the Z650 is, Kawasaki hasn't saved a few dollars by using excessively cheap switchgear and controls.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's probably running leaner but won't be out of "safe" range until changing the exhaust headers for a cat-less higher flow system. ECU flash would eliminate 2ndary butterfly restrictions, 1-3 gear power restrictions, 6th gear top revs restrictions, and ignition map restrictions.

      @@exothermal.sprocket Damn I got so much to learn. Didn't understand a word here...

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@lukemiles1711 Don't beat yourself down about it. Modern machines are complicated.
      Simple way to think about it: Air flows through the airbox snorkel, through the filter, down the throat of the throttlebodies, past a couple of throttle plates, into the cylinder, fuel mist blends with the air, compresses, explodes, and the flow continues out the exhaust all the way to the tip and back into the air.
      Eliminating the restrictions on the intake and out-going sides increases the ability of the engine to consume more air. It's an air pump. More air requires more fuel in order to achieve the proper ratio for combustion. The ECU controls the fuel. If you increase airflow through the system by removing restrictions (better air filter, less restrictive airbox, less restrictive muffler, less restrictive header pipes), the ECU will adjust itself to provide more fuel...... to a limit. Usually about 10% is the programmed limit. Beyond that, the engine just starves for fuel and runs lean. Lean = hot. Too lean = very hot = damage.
      Each motorcycle is different, not every ECU is the same, not every collection of hardware controls to make it run are the same. Not every airbox, filter, exhaust system are the same. Every bike has to be addressed according to its own design and limits.
      Usually the ECU has to be flashed (reprogrammed) to put out more fuel, better ignition timing curves, better throttle maps (ride-by-wire) to suit the changes. The result is more power. It's not because bolt-ons generate power. It's because bolt-ons UNRESTRICT power the factory was forced (EPA emissions regs) to harness the engine with (which reduced power, reduced noise, reduced carbon emissions, reduced fun).
