  • Today, we put Eastwood Road Salt/Brine Neutralizer through the Apex Detail Review Process! Spray Eastwood's Road Salt Neutralizer up under your car at the end of the day after driving through road salt, brine and ice melt.
During the winter months, vehicles are blasted by road salt, brine & ice melt causing metal parts and body panels to rust and corrode. Eastwood Road Salt Neutralizer is a blend of inorganic acids, corrosion inhibitors and penetrants that neutralize the corrosive film left behind from salt & ice melters without harming painted or finished surfaces. To use simply mix 6 oz of Eastwood Road Salt Neutralizer with 1 gallon of warm water, spray or sponge on the solution and five minutes later hose off. One gallon of concentrate makes more than 21 gallons of Neutralizer. Ideal for any metal substrate exposed to road salt.

I'm so glad I moved to Florida. Thinking back to when I lived in N.J. I used to get an undercoating to protect your undercarriage from the salt they used to lay on the roads, it worked well enough as I always took my cars through tunnel washers and they had that undercarriage wash.

Have always used a product called Salt-Away but applied it using a pressure washer with a vacuum port and a wand with a 90 degree angle for washing the entire undercarriage. You’re applying the solution as you blast the major salt away. Best to only rinse the painted surface and leave the solution on the undercarriage to fight salt. Cleveland winters are nasty.

when I lived in PA we used hot water pressure washers to rinse away the calcium chloride brine they put on the roads. Hot water will re-dissolve the dried on brine. Not ideal for most people since hot water pressure washers are expensive. But if you want to go a chemical free route it's an option.

I did a bunch of research on using these products a couple years ago. I found a good study done by the Ohio DOT. The take away I got from reading the entire article was most of these products are effective neutralizing salt, however, the recommended dilution rates have to be increased significantly to attain effectiveness, thus increasing cost per application.
At the time of the study (2014), Salt Away was the best performer, but that may not be true today. I purchased Salt Away and diluted per the studies recommendations. My winter routine when I can't do a driveway contact wash is to go to a local manual car wash, and presoak my vehicle with the salt eliminator using my Marolex sprayer. I then do the manual wash/rinse, including undercarriage. The commercial car wash is not the best method for removing road film, but along with the salt elimimator it helps with the salt removal, and most of the winter road crud.
Also, I do an annual Krown rust proofing respray of my under carriage in the Fall, followed by a Spring wheels off undercarriage deep cleaning, and repainting of any suspension components that are showing rust. It's a never ending battle living in the rust belt.....

Not good for your skin with too much UV from the sun then in the cold weather and cold water on your hands and joints. That kind of exposure will catch up with you. Hi Brian, I hope you don't mind me posting this detailed info: I've been researching this subject for many years. Some people think an alkaline degreaser will neutralize salts but Chemically speaking, an alkaline degreaser will NOT neutralize chlorides/salts. Only acids or other proprietary mixes will neutralize salts/chlorides.... There was a very detailed study about Salt Neutralizers I'd like to share with everyone:
    Google:
"Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Salt Neutralizers for Washing
    Snow and Ice Equipment"
Here is the 38pg. abridged report for Ohio DOT that does mention the Eastwood product that is a 5% Sulfamic Acid:

Also, I found a very safe Industrial no-rinse salt-neutralizer called Chlor-Rid that uses a proprietory formula. The rep. I spoke to wouldn't even confirm if it was an acid, but I believe it's probably a buffered/inhibited acid formulation, however they state it's a no-rinse and will not harm any type of paints including car-paint. 1:100 dilution. 1 gal makes 100gals of finished spray applied thru a pressure-washer for fastest coverage.....

There was a seller on Amazon who was selling the 1gal. for $80 but no longer, only the 5gal on Amazon. Maybe it's also for sale on Ebay, or Google "Chlor Rid 1gal." to see the distributors who sell it, or call Chlor-Rid. I saw these guys selling it by 1 gal. also......it'll last a long time. If you read about it, it's a technology that surpasses regular salt netralizers, as i'ts formulated to be used in industrial prep-coatings for bridges, ocean platforms, ect......: www.constructionsupplysourcing.com/shop/chlorrid/chlorrid-5-gallons/

i dunno man... looks snakeoil to me. (why not just pure water.)
rather use tannin water solution -convert iron and rust to black surface, which really will slow down the corrosion process.... basically rust converter principle.
carmakers road salt tests are made at high humidity+brine+cycling temperatures....therefore you should not put car in garage during winter.
where car heats the garage and snow -dirt melts.
chemical reactions speed increases with temperature in general !
