    I just scored a really sweet go cart frame. I think I'm gonna have to run by Harbor Freight and grab one of these engines. Thanks for the video.

    I bought and sold the exact same engine a few years ago. When Honda discontinues a particular model, they let the patents expire. If I remember correctly they were balanced, had very little if no vibration and extremely quiet... just like a Honda actually. I don't think there was a single one returned either. Of course I couldn't advertise them as "Honda", but for the money I was able to buy them, and sell them for, they were better.

    Nice video. I bought my daughter a go kart here recently for Christmas with a Tecumseh engine. HS-50 to be exact. had to replace the clutch. Tire, wheel and sprocket which i got all in one for $45 bucks in Ohio. I replaced the points,condenser,plug but now i am having a hard time keeping her running. engine runs but doesn't run if you get what i mean. Point of this you showed me what a good motor that is and once this motor goes that will be next to be installed.

      I got a go kart with the same engine on it and to be honest it’s complete trash. It was a 5hp and it’d start but if it stayed idling it’s just die so I’ve decided on buying one of these predator motors and believe me it’s for the better. There’s a reason tuchumsen doesn’t exist anymore their motor are garbage. Plus you’ll get a lot more fun out of the predator. They are only like 100 bucks if you’ve got a coupon and 120 without it. Totally worth the buy.

    If you ever end up owning that thing than go on Amazon and buy one of those Chinese torque converters. They are cheap but they work just as good as the American made ones and they will make that go cart really rip. It also gets rid of all of the clutch noise and stuff too. I put one on my minibike with basically the same engine that you have and if you are sitting to far back on it and you give it WOT from a standstill you will flip over backwards.

    I put a Predator 212 cc on a Chinese 2 wheel drive mini atv..frame. Centrifigal clutch 7 or 8 teeth and reused rear sprocket, about 40 tooth. Some easy frame mods with welder and tossed the Chinese plastic "body fender" stuff. This sucker flies although gear ratio is for "fast" so starting out from stop I have help it a bit since I am 200 lbs. Never have opened it up as it feels like I will go airborne...I call it the Doom Buggy. Good engines I have 3 for various applications

      It is on my channel in a video of sighting in my rifle but not featured or seen close-up. It is not a show piece but it runs. It seems there is some kind of minor fix needed from time to time but that is only because it is "custom" and the frame etc were abused in another life. I wanted something like this when I was a kid but never had one. Here I am at 60 and finally have my Doom Buggy (kind of neglected my Harley for a while, for shame!)! I would not let a kid this ride it without helmet and proper attire though, definitely not a toy.

    • @Foxboss9

      Some of them do rust and won't come off. Unfortunately You will need to buy a new pulley and cut the old one off with damaging the crankshaft too much.. Good luck.

    I had to completely disassemble and reassemble this engine for my comprehensive technology class. Unfortunately, the rpm was too high because the governor was placed too high up.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too bad about the governor adjust. But, it's cool you got to play around with the engine for a class assignment!

      For my intro to mechanics class we rebuilt a 205cc Briggs n Stratton motor and I did the same thing

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those governors if not adjusted can be the downfall of the engine real quick if you don't shut them down in time. Just remember,with the linkage connected, and the throttle plate wide open, the governor gets adjusted as far as it can go in the same direction as it took to open the throttle plate. After you've done it a hundred or so times you don't even have to think about it.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      daxter561 lower the Rpms at idle so it's not engaging the clutch.. If it is already a low/factory idle and the clutch is still engaging either install heavier springs in the clutch or buy a higher rpm one both can be found at BMI Karts.. Tell them you saw the video on TH-cam and I said for you to call them.. Good luck..

    Just bought a used cart for the grandkids, came with little 5hp Subaru , plenty on top end once you get it rolling but will not climb uphill even with a small load? any adjustments to look at before I start replacing parts? Motor starts super easy and sound good just no pulling power

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kerry forga gear ratio and clutch rpm engagement... The engine has to be at Optimum rpm when the clutch engages... Tire size and tooth count on both sprockets has to match what you want the kart to do..

    Please forgive me if I'm asking a question you've already answered. What is your painting process? Do you use spray cans, brush, power spryer? I'm in the process of finishing up an old go kart. Thanks

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the first time anyone has asked... I used "rattle can" spray paint. Make sure to wipe down really well with a solvent of some type like mineral spirits. (I use brake cleaner) Then use a a really good primer and decent spray paint OR in my case I used really good spray paint without primer.. I am a huge fan of Valspar Tractor and implement spray paint. It goes on even, it has great self leveling properties, it dries fast and shiny, and a couple of coats makes it hard to chip. Here is a link - - amzn.to/1L83Fzu
      the downside is that the colors are limited.

  • @metallitech
    @metallitech 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is that the throttle or the speed setter? If I understand correctly, the speed setter indirectly controls the throttle via the governor.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Throttle cable connects to throttle plate control lever. The linkage on the lever is also connected to the governor..

    Great video! I have a question if you'd be so kind. I have this same motor, but the sprocket on the gokart seems to be quite large so the motor will have to be lifted on a fabricated mount system OR I could change the sprocket to something smaller in diameter. Which would you recommend?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shannon Lewis spacer for the motor..that is If you are happy with the current sprocket(gearing). If you change the sprocket make sure the pitch is correct for the chain and that it is a compatible tooth count to match the other sprocket. As far as mounting it on a spacer try some good quality hardwood first to make sure all is good then you can machine something more permanent later.. sometimes I end up leaving the hardwood on.. good luck

    Harbor freight has two 6.5 hp's Item#69727 or 69730. Do you know which you used and what the difference is? Did you have to take links out of the chain or put spacers under the engine? I'm replacing a B& S 135212 on a manco starbird go cart,looks very similar to what you did. If the clutch and base bolt on,I just have to play with the throttle cable.

    hey I am purchasing a go-kart that has all the tires being slicks and i wanted to know if they would be fine to drive around my neighborhood. I know you can not drive them in the rain and that is fine but I just wanted to know how they would run, wear, and work. most important thing I want to know is how long they will last if I drive an average of 10 mins a day because I had a previous go kart that had tires with tread that were meant for lawn mowers and they wore out within 2 weeks and completley poped. the speed is about 25mph please answer

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TechMultiview100 Man I wan't to give you a good answer but it's all relevant..
      I would suspect the lawn and garden tires compound was more for turf as most are...but if your alignment was ok and the cart didn't weigh much and the driving was reasonable, then I would think they should have lasted a lot longer than 2 weeks.
      The slicks are made for asphalt/concrete but the smoothness of the driving surface can vary greatly. So, to answer your question on how YOUR tires on YOUR kart that YOUR driving on YOUR streets are going to last and taking in consideration the karts weight, alignment, suspension, engine HP, aggressiveness of driving and also surface temperature and etc etc.. ,,,, I cannot even fathom a guess. I will say, that with the slicks, you should notice better cornering ability for sure. as far as longevity,,,, hard telling.. good luck

    Instead of cheap clutch should have put a torque converter on it .

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike Thomas 2 reasons not to... 1) I was reselling it.
      2) I would never install a tork-a-verter or any other variable drive on a non-live axle cart..
      These yard carts only go for about $375-450 in this region.. $120 for the new engine... $75 for the new tires.. And then add the cost of a live axle conversion and finally the variable drive.. And I would have an asking price over $600 to make the same profit I did selling this at $425 And, the cart was only in my possession for 3 days total.. Adding those extra components would have made the "flip" of this unit take an additional day. And that's only "if" I was able to get a buyer at a much higher price.. NOW, if I was to keep it I would have done the axle conversion and variable drive plus there a lot of other things I , Like suspension, bigger tires, disc brakes and Exhaust..

    Hey bro, I have a question, but first let me say Thanks! Your videos I've watched helped tremendously. So, Can a kill switch on the 6.5 Honda Clone get locked in the Off position causing the connection to the coil to stay broke and not deliver spark needed? Thanks again!

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hardball Hall Thanks!! I won't say that it isn't possible but, it is likely either. If you suspect an issue with the Switch just disconnect the ground portion of the switch (2 wire) if it is a one wire just unbolt/unscrew the switch from the mounting position(1 wire).. If there is a low oil shut off sensor on the engine . try disconnecting that too to make sure it isn't bad..good luck

      It's a 6.5 Honda clone. only a year old. I've found the problem, clogged carb! Im the one who clogged it too! I guess I let something get in the carb when I reassembled it, don't take much at all to clog those jets. You mentioned an oil sensor. If there was one on mine where would it be? And thanks again, This Endeavor has made me like it, I've taken apart everything I got that runs on gas! lol! Thanks again;

      @Foxboss9  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I don't recall tire size. I bought them at TSC(tractor supply). As far as speed, maybe 25mph. That depends on so many factors. Rider weight, engine rpms, tire size and most importantly gearing. If you were to set up your kart for top end speed only with a lightweight driver I would think 45 MPH would be obtainable. Good luck!

      There is a washer on there but its one that I already had. Its not a special washer it just had to be a hardened washer.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can buy new wheels online from BMI Karts .. Or if you slot your holes on the frame pad where the engine mounts and buy a longer chain you can move the engine forward so the clutch doesn't hit, As long as your wheel set isn't really huge.

    I'm trying to build a small go kart i live in a small town and i want something i can sneek in the woods but anyways what do i need to build a basic go kart besides the engine and brake and throttle such as transition or etc i see that you have that black sprocket thing attacked to the engine is that all the basic i would need is that and the engine ?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The black thing is a clutch.. It is a critical part.. The easiest way to get a cart built is to buy a old one needing repaired or buy a frame and go from there..

    • @Foxboss9

      michael hipol mine fired up in 3 pulls.. Check for spark by spraying a couple short burst of carb cleaner/starting fluid in the carburetor directly.. If it tries to start then you know spark is good.

I thought I was screwed but this engine bolted onto my MURRAY with an old beat up tecumseh I dicked with that engine for 2 - 3 hours before I just said fuck it went to harbor freight and got this engine. It bolted up bolt for bolt and everything was perfect. shortened the throttle cable and BOOM brand new awesome running engine that starts on the first pull.

    I want to connect a kill switch I bought the same motor at Harbor Freight the go kart frame that I have came with a kill switch wired on to the steering wheel . how do I connected to the engine?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the switch does on the engine is ground the signal going to the coil to the engine. So all you need to do is wire the kill switch to do the same thing. If your kill switch has one wire you need to connect it to the small wire that leads to the coil(not the spark plug wire) and then ground the switch to the frame. If the new kill switch has 2 wires, the long wire will connect to the coil the same as mentioned before and the short wire will ground to the frame. Good luck.

    Did the engine come with that clutch or did you have to buy one seperate?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The engine is universal. It can be bought and used on a lot of different machinery. Rototillers, waterpumps, sod cutters, air compressors etc.. you get the picture.. Because mini-bikes and Go-Karts are really the only applications that require a clutch, all engine Mfgs including Predator / Harbor Freight do not sell their engines with clutches. Plus there are different clutches available that can be used on the same go-kart/mini-bike to achieve different engine performance characteristics. The clutch I used can he found by clicking the link in my video description... Thanks for the question..

    I know this is an old video but ALWAYS ALWAYS put a kill switch on a go kart. Growing up I had the throttle hang wide open on me a # of times on different models. The 1st nearly put me through a barb wire fence before I got it off. Even if your not worried about it for yourself or you feel confident in your own children's abilities one day it might end up in the hands of a kid that will NEED that switch.

  • @dennyshortt8320
    @dennyshortt8320 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kill switch is important, if the throttle sticks it's hard to keep steering and reach around and hit the on/off switch for the motor. A 10 year old may not have the presence of mind to kill the engine from the motor. Mount a kill switch where it can be easily accessed on the steering column. You addressed it in your video but then dismissed the idea. 96K viewers have seen this video. It's your child... wire in a kill switch

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. If I had a 10 year old... But at the time of filming my kids were 16 and 17... Plus, not only would 2 throttle return springs have to fail But, the drum brakes would have to fail completely too. At full speed with throttle wide open the kart would still come to a dead stop almost as quickly as no throttle being applied. What the video didn't show is the new buyer advising me he didn't need the kill switch for his kids either. Ultimately it's a parents of the riders choice. Thanks for the comment.
