I never got the shield in 2017 for gaming part of it as I wanted a good media player and it has been one of the best I've own, I go back to Windows Media Center and the only issue I had with WMC was you need a large PC to connect to the TV as this was long before mini PC's were released.
Great video. I just wanted to point out something I believe you missed. The Shield can absolutely play AAA PC titles with a subscription to GeForce Now. I can link my Steam & Xbox digital library and play GeForce compatible games on my Home Theater TV/Audio system. The fact it also does media better than anything else is just a bonus for me.
@@bandit8623 they shut down the self-hosted streaming version that you could do from your own game PC, which was a bummer because it worked so well, I could even use it at a hotel etc. But they still offer their GeForce Cloud streaming option, which is a good implementation of cloud gaming as it lets you use your own Steam/epic etc accounts, but costs $$$ to be worthwhile.
This just shows how stagnant the TV box market has been. I think mainly because so many modern TVs are already "SMART" people dont feel the need to upgrade but they really dont know how poorly their TV is handling the smart functionality when compared to a game console or a external solution like the Shield.
Lon, Thank you for all your videos. I’ve learned a lot and appreciate them. I have question about the Shield.. I have one I bought in 2017 and it’s been running slow and wanted to know if there’s a way to back up apps to a USB drive and reset to factory and restore apps. Not all apps but backing a few apps would be nice. Mainly for settings. Thanks again..
Fun fact, there's a native super Mario galaxy port in China for the shield. Makes ya wonder if it was testing the waters for the switch then. So wish Nintendo went out of their way to get all the streaming apps on their system early. Then, it could be a sudo shield successor. So hope this video does well! Loved how you went down memory lane.
Ahh i remember 2015 as a youngin living with my parents i saved up enough money to buy a console. I had a wii u already and decided to buy an nvidia shield tv 2015. Not for streaming purposes but because i thought android gaming on the TV sounded like a great idea. And plus emulators on my TV sounded cool. In 2015 retro gaming on TVs other than on a PC wasnt such a prominent thing. They even had a native Re5 port. And they had GTA san andreas on the play store. Eventually i stopped really gaming on here since it only got more limited as updates came out. And ten years later. Its been through me going to college, several different roomates borrowed it, watch parties for what feels like different eras in my life and i still use the shield as our main streaming device at me and my girls place
still rocking my 2017 switch and i get very few issues at all. The only issue i ever have is simply minor lag when the remote wakes up. but once the remote wakes it's absurdly snappy. It moves as fast as my fingers go. No slowdown at all. Any issue i've ever had with plex has been a plex issue. I don't. have a complicated set up so it does the job.
Nice walk down memory lane. Every TV in my house is powered by an Nvidia Shield. I have all 2017 models. Great value since software support has kept up. Sad that many set top box reviews today only focus on latest Apple TV, Roku device, etc. when the Shield is still better than all of them.
i think you skipped the tegra 2 in the history there where it was powered by some popular devices back in the day like the Motorola Atrix, Transformer TF101 (which I had till today and still works albeit just as a cam viewer)
I stopped using my 2019 Shield Pro because I bought a Samsung QN90B and the Tizen interface seemed adequate and quick enough for the few apps I use. I also got tired of needing 3 remotes (TV, receiver, Shield). My TV's interface has been getting rather slow lately, so I'm considering dusting off my Shield and putting it back to work. Are there any good universal remotes that work with the Shield? Do people still use Logitech Harmony remotes? Maybe I could set up some Google Assistant commands/routines for the few settings I regular change on my receiver and TV as they both work with Google Assistant.
FYI, i think 2019 saw a new process node, but the design for that node stayed the same, this effectively just means any of the newer hardware uses either less power, or offers a bit better performance for the same power The main problem i've had with all of them has been RAM Even 4GB is really not enough for smooth 4K for an APU, now if it were a more traditional 4GB+4GB for the GPU then maybe it would be fine, but really i think this thing needed 6GB Also, 2:50 If i recall correctly the HP version of this tablet with the Tegra had magnets so strong you could mount it to a fridge, or even the corner bead for drywall, i just wish it had supported wireless charging for an amazingly slick mounting mechanism for a home automation hub that you could just yank off the wall and use as a tablet Edit, since the Jetson Nano and Shield both share the same chip and RAM layout, i really wish the Shield TV Pro with that extra space over the tube TV had the NX slot so that you could upgrade it to the TX2, the Xavier, and now Orin NX modules keeping the same interafce motherboard, shell, and OS, heck keep all the settings and configs between upgrades.
had some issues using my shield 2017 to access my separate plex server at home last year (turns out i didn't configure my pfsense firewall correctly). i switched to a roku box and hated it, despite it being a few years newer. switched back to my shield 2017, fixed my firewall settings, and it's still the best streaming box i've used, bar none.
The NVIDIA Shield 2019 remote is one of the best ergonomically and having a built-in speaker makes sure you never lose it. However, in the past year or two Android TV decided to flood the home screen with ads (including fast food) so now I run the highly recommended Projectivy Launcher. $200 for hardware with ads is a joke! Curious if you can connect a USB 3.0 Blu-ray drive to the Shield Pro.
I am still Rockin my 2015 Nvidia Shield TV. I did have to replace the remote control at some point. (I still have my OG nvidia Sheild Portable that i mostly use to play some older games and SNES Roms. I wish that form factor would make a comeback verse the tablet with controllers on the side. )
One thing I did do was use my shield along with an mcable to handle upscaling and apply color upscaling.. Its like having HDR on all videos and it does make a difference.. Colors are more vibrant and the picture looks sharper..
Still running the 2017 Shield, great box. I had to replace the remote with the newer 2019 version (original remote was trash and kept losing connectivity). I love it for Plex and Jellyfin but I'm starting to see major performance issues with Disney+ and Prime Video, lots of lost frames, audio out of sync etc, I'm not surprised with the age of it. I would buy a new version in a heartbeat
Have one on every TV in my house and a travel one. What other device can you say that came out in 2015, that still works as good as it did day one and still doesn't feel outdated? Best technology purchase I can say I have ever made.
Watching you on one of my original Shields! I have 6, all original except for one of the “mini” ones. I have a Shield tablet too, but it’s very slow compared to even older iPads.
I also had the Sheild Tablet. Don't forget about the innovative touch screen that had a pressure sensitive capacity screen that would respond very well to the built-in stylus.
8:35 The TALOS Principle!? No way!!! I have that in my computer along with The TALOS Principle 2 and I love both of the games. I don't think you can get better graphics than those two puzzle games although the ReThink series from Yaeko Games is good as well. And it seems the NVIDIA Shield is the only top-of-the-line streaming box that includes all the features for home theater enthusiasts such as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, but then the Apple TV that I have do have support for Dolby Vision, but I don't have Dolby Atmos. Still, i do not want ads in a streaming box and that's the reason why I want to go with Zidoo Z9X Pro and just rip the discs to my home server (I have Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-Ray package). I kind of want to de-Google/de-Apple/de-Amazon/de-Roku myself from having streaming accounts just so I can have Netflix, Disney+, and Paramount+ but I suppose that's not possible.
The Nvidia shield is still the best for multi-purpose use including Plex all of your favorite apps and even as a homebrew scene. This is the legendary status of the D-Link boxee box.
I have had much love for my 2017 Shield, glad they are still supporting it. Though with the induction of ads for a product I paid a premium for and it's 7 years old (numerous crashes and slowness) I retired mine this year. I believe Nvidia is done with this product line, otherwise we would have seen a refresh long before now. It was nice while it lasted, far cheaper solutions out there to choose from now.
I've got the 2017 and 2019 Pro models and love them, but it's too bad they haven't announced anything since. Over 5 years now... I think we need a bit more speed, and TH-cam HDR (VP9-Profile 2) support. I don't really play games on mine (got my Xbox series x for that), mainly for streaming (netflix and such) and watching my media on plex, in which it supports very well!
I own the Nvidia shield tv and the reason I bought it was to use it for emulation. I wanted something small where I could leave it beside my tv and hardly notice it and was perfect for this. The only downside it could onky play up to Dreamcast and now I really want something to play ps2, xbox, xbox 360, Gamecube, Switch and PS3. I reckon it would be awesome if Nvidia made a powerful mini pc. If they did I would definitely consider it as im now at the point of considering buying another device to play those more powerful consoles where the Shield can't play.
There are no rumors as of now. However Its unlikely they will make a new one until there is some new technology that has to be implemented to the public. Because The intent for the shield is less for OTT streaming apps and more for remote/cloud playing. So if I have to make a guess, they will release a new shield tv when geforce now can support 4k120hz streaming.
I have a 2017 pro and it boggles my mind that in the technology space after all these years that it's still one of the best options out there for what it does. If a new one isn't out by the time this one finally kicks the bucket, I might have to get an Apple TV.
I had a Shield tablet. While the specs were great, apps ran sluggishly on it for some reason. It was terrible. When the Shield TV was announced, it was a real leap of faith when I pre-ordered it, but I'm glad I did. I've had one of each generation Shield TV since. It's getting a bit long in the tooth though. We're overdue for a new version with AV1 support.
I still love my shield! My only gripe is the remote. It loses its connection very often, so I have to find a better replacement. Does anyone have any recommendations for this?
There's still not much wrong with the Shield Pro..Maybe AV1 and VP9 hardware decoding would be nice. I'd also like a better solution to the auto refresh-rate switching issues. QFT promised it would be a thing of the past but it hasn't really happened yet. 4K 120fps video decoding? 120fps gaming with HDMI 2.1 VRR?
@@happynose96 I guess but that is a very small percentage of people who use KODI and why have an Apple tv and no other Apple devices? Apple's ecosystem and how well they work together is the number 1 reason I buy them.
@@RatedX_Gaming I was tempted to get the Apple TV as I have iPhone and Apple Watch, it was only the KODI thing that put me off. I host my media collection locally on a server so I need support for that and KODI was my choice of playback software. I will look further into alternatives. Agree that Shield is due an upgrade but don’t think will happen
Great video, i have 4x 2019 shield pros in my home system. It is the ONLY cots device that can play back 4k blu ray rips. Everything else chuggs and stalls. 4k rips are like 30-60Mbps, vs netflix/amzn prime which is like 10-15Mbps
I'm looking for a 2019 Shield Pro but they've hardly went down in price, and I'm terrified that it would lose most of its value the moment its successor (or a viable high-performance competitor) shows up.
Mine is still going strong after many years. The game controller battery died, so I had to permanently plug into a USB charging cable, but everything else still works fine.
My 2015 Shield TV Pro model hard drive died in a power outage recently. Tried everything to revive it. I was able to get it up again with info from XDA, but it only has half its functionality and if I try to upgrade beyond 8.0, it bricks it. If anyone has a solid solution for reviving this thing, I'd love to hear how.
I have the physical copy of crysis remastered for my nintendo switch. I wonder how the nintendo switch emulator for android runs crysis remastered on android since android supports the nintendo switch emulator. The nintendo switch also uses a custom cpu and gpu from nvidia. I wish nvidia made a newer version of the nvidia shield with the newest wifi and fastest wifi available while charging over usb c with more powerful hardware with 4k resolution output at 120 fps compared to the current nvidia shield with 4k resolution output at 60 fps. Basically an upgraded and more powerful version of the current nvidia shield without ai like the 2015 version of the nvidia shield and support for native resolution like 4k without needing to do any upscaling. For example, an audio cd is 16 bit uncompressed such as pcm since a 24 bit high resolution audio pcm is also uncompressed for high resolution audio. For instance, even dvd audio has higher audio quality and more audio channels than the 16 bit audio cd but the blu ray content depending on the resolution being 720p or 1080p would be the equivalent of a blu ray audio pcm uncompressed and 4k content would be the equivalent of dsd 64, dsd 128 or dsd 256 audio uncompressed. I use windows and when it comes to my 4k, blu ray, dvd discs. I only rip in uncompressed iso video format with all the menus, all the extra menus, all the languages, all the meta data such as the music video like the 8 mile movie and with sacd I rip in uncompressed dsf audio format with dp power amp since it also includes all the meta data and album artwork.
Basicly the best version of the shield was the regular 2015 one. Mine still works fine. Sure the old controller and old remote is not that fancy but you can use other controllers and remotes and you also have a remote app from Nvidia.

The fact it also does media better than anything else is just a bonus for me.
didnt gforce now get shutdown?
@@bandit8623 Nope. Just finished another session. Unless I am hallucinating, it works fantastic.
@@bandit8623no still going.
This just shows how stagnant the TV box market has been. I think mainly because so many modern TVs are already "SMART" people dont feel the need to upgrade but they really dont know how poorly their TV is handling the smart functionality when compared to a game console or a external solution like the Shield.
I've purchased 5 Shield TVs for various TVs. A truly awesome product.
And I bought the first one at launch. Still use it.
I've had my Shield since 2018. Love it! It's still working great 👍.
FYI, i think 2019 saw a new process node, but the design for that node stayed the same, this effectively just means any of the newer hardware uses either less power, or offers a bit better performance for the same power
The main problem i've had with all of them has been RAM
Even 4GB is really not enough for smooth 4K for an APU, now if it were a more traditional 4GB+4GB for the GPU then maybe it would be fine, but really i think this thing needed 6GB
Also, 2:50 If i recall correctly the HP version of this tablet with the Tegra had magnets so strong you could mount it to a fridge, or even the corner bead for drywall, i just wish it had supported wireless charging for an amazingly slick mounting mechanism for a home automation hub that you could just yank off the wall and use as a tablet
Edit, since the Jetson Nano and Shield both share the same chip and RAM layout, i really wish the Shield TV Pro with that extra space over the tube TV had the NX slot so that you could upgrade it to the TX2, the Xavier, and now Orin NX modules keeping the same interafce motherboard, shell, and OS, heck keep all the settings and configs between upgrades.
had some issues using my shield 2017 to access my separate plex server at home last year (turns out i didn't configure my pfsense firewall correctly). i switched to a roku box and hated it, despite it being a few years newer. switched back to my shield 2017, fixed my firewall settings, and it's still the best streaming box i've used, bar none.
Do you still use the stick launcher with your Shield or a alternative launcher like Projectivy?
great video and lookback. Thanks.
I am still Rockin my 2015 Nvidia Shield TV. I did have to replace the remote control at some point.
(I still have my OG nvidia Sheild Portable that i mostly use to play some older games and SNES Roms. I wish that form factor would make a comeback verse the tablet with controllers on the side. )
Love my 2017 shield, soon as a new one comes out ill buy it
One thing I did do was use my shield along with an mcable to handle upscaling and apply color upscaling..
Best technology purchase I can say I have ever made.
love it wish they will make new one.
You think there will be a new shield now that we’re approaching the release of the new Nintendo switch 2?
There are no rumors as of now. However Its unlikely they will make a new one until there is some new technology that has to be implemented to the public. Because The intent for the shield is less for OTT streaming apps and more for remote/cloud playing. So if I have to make a guess, they will release a new shield tv when geforce now can support 4k120hz streaming.
Excellent as always!
I have a 2017 pro and it boggles my mind that in the technology space after all these years that it's still one of the best options out there for what it does. If a new one isn't out by the time this one finally kicks the bucket, I might have to get an Apple TV.
Can you still stream from your pc to it?
If they make the ARM chip for handhelds I hope it runs SteamOS 3.6+
I had a Shield tablet. While the specs were great, apps ran sluggishly on it for some reason. It was terrible. When the Shield TV was announced, it was a real leap of faith when I pre-ordered it, but I'm glad I did. I've had one of each generation Shield TV since. It's getting a bit long in the tooth though. We're overdue for a new version with AV1 support.
I like on the shield that you can set audio passthrough and get full fat on your receiver, not so on AppleTv or the amazon fire tv cube.
I love the shield line up. I own two tablets and two Android TV.
Awesome video I'm still a big fan of the shield
I'm watching this on my 2019 Nividia shield
I have the 2017 & 2019 models and they have been solid
Hope with Nvidia developing an ARM CPU / GPU, will open a window for a new TEGRA for a Shield v2 with 8K AV1 support.
It's been the most profitable and best TvBox there is and still rules the market.
I still have my Shield tablet. I use it as a digital photo frame/fancy alarm clock on my nightstand.
I like the history lesson, should do more
@Lon you forgot DTS-X - very few process that lossless format
What Android security patch version has this upgrade? To me it is very outdated.
I still love my shield! My only gripe is the remote. It loses its connection very often, so I have to find a better replacement. Does anyone have any recommendations for this?
Use phone app as controller.
I still want one of these
There's still not much wrong with the Shield Pro..Maybe AV1 and VP9 hardware decoding would be nice. I'd also like a better solution to the auto refresh-rate switching issues. QFT promised it would be a thing of the past but it hasn't really happened yet. 4K 120fps video decoding? 120fps gaming with HDMI 2.1 VRR?
So many people still using the old shield. It was great but nothing beats the 4k Apple tv right now. Hopefully Nvidia makes a new one soon.
Difficult to install KODI on Apple TV 4K without a Mac
@@happynose96 I guess but that is a very small percentage of people who use KODI and why have an Apple tv and no other Apple devices? Apple's ecosystem and how well they work together is the number 1 reason I buy them.
@@RatedX_Gaming I was tempted to get the Apple TV as I have iPhone and Apple Watch, it was only the KODI thing that put me off. I host my media collection locally on a server so I need support for that and KODI was my choice of playback software. I will look further into alternatives. Agree that Shield is due an upgrade but don’t think will happen
@@happynose96 yeah that makes sense. I’ve use Plex for my playback. Give that a look.
