    I was happy to receive the following comment and correction about the Chinese coins used in the above presentation. I am adding it here to be accurate and am grateful for the information, but don't let it throw you. Decide on Yin and Yang and then stick with it.
    "I saw your TH-cam video on casting coins to do a Yijing reading. Did you know that your "yin" side is actually the "heads" face of the coin (hence yang). Note also that it has four Chinese characters--not four "groups"--that say "coin of the realm of the Xuantong emperor"(r. 1906-12) and the back is in Manchu (so, not "characters", but words))."
    I thank the writer of this note.

    💗😊💕Thank you so much for making it so much easier. I just started learning about I Ching. Looks like to further simplify the minority rule: “2 become 1” and “1 become 2”, or “duality to singularity” and “singularity to duality”, or precisely how I see the yin & yang pendant I wear around my neck--it shows two but it is encompassed by the circle around, holding it together as one. And I like that how you teach it-as no need to count them up and then think is it odd or even? (like how I watched and learned in another video yesterday). Your way, causes less thinking/calculating and you can quickly complete and look up its meaning. Thanks again. LOVE and LIGHT to ALL💕😊💗

    I first learned about how to do I Ching from an old booklet I found from the 70's. It actually teaches this method exclusively. When I tried looking up more tutorials, I was really confused by all the talk of adding all these numbers together. While I'm sure there's some kind of numerological reason people do it that way, this "minority rules" method is far easier to comprehend and remember.

    I’ve been scolded more than once for saying that the side of a Chinese coin with four markings is the yin side and the side with two markings is the yang side. I’ve been okay with this, as I’m fine with being wrong, but I’ve been wondering why I’ve thought this for the past 56 years. It occurred to me that it must have something to do with the beginnings of my studies in the I Ching.
    With that in mind, I decided to go to my original source, namely the Wilhelm/Baynes version of The Book Of Changes, and went to the appendix that deals with the coin oracle. That’s where I found the following: “The inscribed side counts as yin, with the value two, and the reverse side counts as yang, with the value three. From this the character of the line is derived.”
    Since I was a teen in a small town when I first read this, there wasn’t a chance of me finding a Chinese coin, so I used pennies, but I did go to the library and take a look at Chinese coins in books, and there I saw pictures of them and noticed that one side was inscribed, usually with four markings, and the other side was inscribed with two marks, or sometimes not at all. Following Wilhelm’s instructions, I therefore considered the side with two markings, or none, yang and the other side yin. I’d forgotten I’d done that until I read the above passage.
    So there it is and with that in mind, I stand by my original decision on which side of the coin is yin and which is yang. If it was good enough for Richard Wilhelm and the Taoist Monk who helped him with his I Ching scholarship, it is most certainly good enough for me. The key is consistency. So whatever works for you. The oracle knows what you mean.

      Thank you. You can use any coins at all. I've used just about everything, including Australian Pennies which have Kangaroos on one side. All you have to do is determine which side is Yin and which is Yang and go from there. I considered the Kangaroo side Yang, as it was active and in motion, but you can do anything you like. It's all about consistency. Have fun with it!

    Hi Mo
    Thank you for a clear and to the point - simplyfication video for I Ching.
    Made "I Ching - Richard Wilhelm translation", which was a gift from a friend, a bit more applicable, sort of...
    Got questions cause it´s a "Book of confusion" for the time being.
    Hopefully you can clear out the confusing elements:
    1. How do you decide where to put marking (x or dot) on the line? Or how do you know it´s there?
    2. I do understan 3 Yin or 3 Yang lines (i hope) but how do you know if it´s a 6 or a 9 in whichever place it may be?
    3. Does a person reads only a judgment and the image after changing lines (and no other text in that hexagram)? If so, why?
    Thank you in advance

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A year late is better than never, I hope. Each side of a coin has a numeric value. Tails equals 2 and heads equals 3. Hence, 3 heads equals 9 and 3 tails equals 6. 9 is a moving Yang line and 6 a moving Yin. You can actually mark them any way you want, but convention puts an X between the space of the broken Yin line and a dot, or circle, on the moving Yang line. You will read the moving line after reading the hexagram, then go to the changed hexagram and read the Judgement. It takes practice, but in time will make sense. Keep at it.

    I’ve seen set of stick where some are black and some are white, I’m assuming for yin and yang. But how do you decided what color goes on top? Black or white? Thanks for the video! Removing the numbers made it sooooo much easier!

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Salvador. I'm not familiar with the sticks you've mentioned, but I'll hazard a guess that it has to do with the position in which they fall and then placing them in order from bottom to top. That's how I'd use it for sure. I'm glad you found the video useful.

  • @RayRemillard
    @RayRemillard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love your explanation. However I am still confused on the lines. In particular I mean the six and the nine where it says something like nine at the beginning means nine in the second position means nine in the fifth place means OK, so what does nine mean and how do I know what place it’s in? And the same for six? I have apparently missed something in the explanation

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Ray. The term, 6 in a place means that the line is considered to be "Old Yin." Likewise, 9 is "Old Yang." This means that the three coins tossed were either 3 tails (Yin) or 3 heads (Yang). The term "old" refers to the state of a line right before it transforms into its opposite. In reality, you don't need to worry about this. In the actual use of the oracle, you'll read lines that will change, those being all heads or all tails, ie. 6 or 9s. So, if you toss 2 heads and a tail, it's a yin line, but if you toss 3 yin lines, it's going to become a yang. This is why I try to make it a bit less confusing. If I've only made it worse, please let me know here and I"ll explain more.

    Does the hexagram Qian automatically change in to Kun then? Also how would you do this "reading" since the hexagrams are polar opposites?

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only way that Qian can change into Kun is if every line is moving. Personally, I've never seen it in my 50 years of I Ching casting. If all the lines change, it's considered to be an immensely good omen. I would read it as great good fortune coming for which one must be ready to be receptive to. Does that make sense?

  • @ClearOutSamskaras
    @ClearOutSamskaras 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have had my I Ching for perhaps 4 years and avoided using it out of fear and some confusion. I have a memory of hearing that it can "answer" or counsel even if you don't ask a question; like picking up on your mood or current situation.
    I just did my first casting because of your video's clear instruction -- Thank you -- but I did not ask a question, i just tried to approach the I Ching with respect, with honor; inherently I had a sense of need too. Do my efforts and the resulting hexagram(s) count for anything when consulting the I Ching in this way, where no question in particular has been asked?
    P.S. I also had opened to a random page (no casting of coins and no question; it was prior to finding your video) with a sense of wanting help or guidance of some sort. Can that be a useful approach (done very sparingly)?

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello. Yes, there was undoubtedly some sort of wisdom to be gained from the hexagrams you cast. Don't stress over it, but do mull it over and you'll find some bit of wisdom that will clarify something. As for the book, yes, I do that all the time. Bibliomancy has been around for centuries and it works well with the I Ching, especially with the Wilhelm/Baynes version. His commentaries are truly brilliant and often carry great clarity. Although many only count the Yarrow Stalk odds when finding a hexagram, I've discovered that the I Ching is always talking. Any attempt to listen will result in some new knowledge, regardless of how it's approached. That's been my experience over the decades. Thank you for your comment and your question.

    Hi Mo, thank you for a great video. However, I did not understand the following; you say that after the first cast that you only read lines 3 and 4. Does this mean that only "old/moving" lines are relevant and all other lines are irrelevant? What happens when there are no "old/moving" lines in a cast? Thanks:))

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only lines read are moving lines. If there are no moving lines, the hexagram doesn’t change. This may or may not be problematic, depending on the situation. You should be able to tell.

      Further inspection of the hexagrams should reveal that they are all different, although some do have similarities with others. That is the strength of the system. When the moving lines are introduced, each reading will be quite unique. They certainly can satisfy a doubting mind. That is why they exist, to turn doubt into certainty.

      If that's how you wish to do it, please do so. My way is accurate, and yours will be, too, as long as you're consistent. Any lines in the oringinal casting of thw hexigram that add to 9 or 6 written with o or x are called mooving lines...........this mean that line not only has an extra little meaning but that there will then b another whole hexigram to look at......ie the 6 will now become an 8 the x is no longer relevant...the line has moooved from _x_=6 to ...._ _=8 there for if at least one line or two or sometimes 3 or 4 lines are the 3 sames side of the coins ie 6or 9 you have one hexigram reading changing into another.......But wen a reading/hexigram Has no x or o the simply is no mooving lines therefor no second hexigram

      I'm sorry I didn't see your question earlier. You don't read them in the final hexagram because it's your destination. The "changes" themselves are the conditions that bring about the resolution. However, if you find it works reading them, why change?

    Thanks for your very useful explanation. I’m new to this. One thing that didn’t make sense was that fish and pigs are the least intelligent of animals. Simply not true. Pigs are actually on an intelligence level similar to dogs. Do you think this is a transition error?

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope. It isn't a mistake in translation. It was an opinion held at the time. It certainly isn't my opinion. My dad was a Veterinarian and pigs are incredibly smart and can certainly reason. This was a cultural idiom, if you will. I have no idea if the bias is still held, but it's not meant to be taken at face value. I hope that helps. There are many such idiomatic phrases that will raise the hackles of the modern reader, but the key is to get through the initial response and find the meaning therein. I hope that helps.

    • @MoAbdelbaki

      Hello. It's actually the Wilhelm/Baynes translation. Jung wrote a forward. There is a discussion regarding old and young yin and yang. Take your book and begin at page 721 and read until 724. There you will find the concept of old and young yin and yang, and why 2 yins and one yang equal yang, and 2 yangs and one yin equal yin. The term, "Minority Rule," is mine, but it does make it much easier. I learned the process from Wilhelm, and he is said to have learned from a Taoist. I hope this helps.
