  • This is a simple and accurate way to construct an I-Ching Hexagram. It will always have one moving line. It simply gives another option to the aspiring seeker and is a handy tool to have in your bag of tricks.

    I’ve been scolded more than once for saying that the side of a Chinese coin with four markings is the yin side and the side with two markings is the yang side. I’ve been okay with this, as I’m fine with being wrong, but I’ve been wondering why I’ve thought this for the past 56 years. It occurred to me that it must have something to do with the beginnings of my studies in the I Ching.
    With that in mind, I decided to go to my original source, namely the Wilhelm/Baynes version of The Book Of Changes, and went to the appendix that deals with the coin oracle. That’s where I found the following: “The inscribed side counts as yin, with the value two, and the reverse side counts as yang, with the value three. From this the character of the line is derived.”
    Since I was a teen in a small town when I first read this, there wasn’t a chance of me finding a Chinese coin, so I used pennies, but I did go to the library and take a look at Chinese coins in books, and there I saw pictures of them and noticed that one side was inscribed, usually with four markings, and the other side was inscribed with two marks, or sometimes not at all. Following Wilhelm’s instructions, I therefore considered the side with two markings, or none, yang and the other side yin. I’d forgotten I’d done that until I read the above passage.
    So there it is and with that in mind, I stand by my original decision on which side of the coin is yin and which is yang. If it was good enough for Richard Wilhelm and the Taoist Monk who helped him with his I Ching scholarship, it is most certainly good enough for me. The key is consistency. So whatever works for you. The oracle knows what you mean. - Peace and Love, my Friends!

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will read the moving line in the original hexagram and then the hexagram it turns into. Read all but the moving lines of the second hexagram.

  • @stevechalker3283
    @stevechalker3283 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The problem with this method is that only one line can ever be a moving line. I have used the I Ching my whole life and I often get multiple moving lines. I would NOT recommend using this method. This is not a technique I have ever seen described in authentic translations. I would advise using the three coin method. Used correctly, the I Ching is uncanny in it's accuracy, although you will very often not receive the answer you want, it will, in time, be proven correct. Good fortune.

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You're absolutely correct.I hardly ever use it, but wanted to include it for the sake of being complete. I will say, however, that I've used it with excellent results, even though it is limiting. The I Ching is so incredible, that it delivers results regardless of the method used. Many users swear that only the yarrow stalk method is correct. Others use 2 coins in order to match the odds of the stalk method. Some use 16 marbles. I often use nature itself, as well a Dragon Bead set. The point is not about the form, but the sincerity of the question and the willingness of the seeker to contemplate the oracle. The magic of divination is not in the form used, but in the message received. Although not in traditional translations, it does work. I DO advise those interested to try it and judge for themselves. Dogma is the enemy of the mysteries.

    Have you ever used I ching sticks with the lines drawn on them? What do you think of them? And what do you mean deriving a hexagram from nature? I use a pendulum to get my headgrams, ever used that method? Thanks for the tutorial btw 😁

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Yes, I have I Ching sticks, although I generally use them for keeping track of lines as I throw. However, it's as valid a method as any other to toss them. Deriving a Hexagram from Nature is a wonderful method I've used for years. For example, if you see a chicken run across a road, you could infer Sun and Chen as the trigrams. It's more complex, of course, but that's the basic idea. I've not used my pendulum for the I Ching, but why not? If it works for you, that's very cool. I think I'll give it a try.

      This is taken from a an old book on Tibetan divination and culture. I'd have to dig through my books to discover the exact place. I'm not the only one to use it. It works beautifully, however I still use the 3 coin method. Anything that works is valid.

      @@MoAbdelbaki, thank you! I just used some metallic gold and silver sharpies to create my own “old” coin in the set of six because the cheaply six set I ordered online did not have one that was slightly different, and so I fixed that. This should be fun!
      I’ve read the Tao Te Ching already, and then I decided to ask the I Ching a question with some pocket change and probably counted the wrong way (heads vs. tails as 3 vs. 2) but was doing it as consistently as I could from another video and adding up lines (circling whenever I would roll all heads or tails), and the answer was affirmative that something would happen that is almost impossible in America, and then it did! I was shocked and ordered these coins to practice attuning more intimately with this strange force (within?). If it was correct, it would mean miracles upon miracles after that first one. I would. Ever believe in something like this, but if it works, I don’t care about being right as much as being alive and whole!

      @@MoAbdelbaki well, I would not say it is necessarily fun and games and lighthearted, or I would not have consulted it. I don’t think it is a game by any means and only got it because of facing end-of-life concerns at a young age. • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TEA-fj3ut I've used both over the years and both are accurate. The traditional Yarrow Stalk method gives a different set of odds than the coin method. I won't get into that here, but there are those who won't use the coins for that reason. I've discovered that any sincere method will provide great wisdom to the seeker. I suggest trying both. The Yarrow is more meditative, while the coins are faster. Neither is more accurate than the other. I also use many other methods to create Hexagrams. They all have worked.

    I disagree. Forcing a single mutation is not typical of the I Ching. The methods that should be used are the rods (more complete) or, to save a lot of time, the 3 coins. I don't see that the use of 6 coin is valid.

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tortoise shell predates the method shown here. It really has no bearing on the modern practitioner. Many scholarly treatises exist on the way the shells were read. Essentially, the shells were heated and cracks were interpreted.

  • @RyanEdmondsMyLifeAsRyan
    @RyanEdmondsMyLifeAsRyan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm... Devil's advocate: there are hexagrams either have NO moving lines, or ones that require more than one moving line. Having ONE brass coin limits the hexagram to only being able to have one moving line, or FORCES the hexagram to have a moving line! For eg if you use the 3 coin method you may receive an entire hexagram without moving lines... Now with this method we might tamper with that by forcing in a variable that HAS to become mutable due to the nature of having a coin to represent a changing line

    • @MoAbdelbaki
      @MoAbdelbaki  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many techniques only want one moving line, Ryan. They don't subscribe to the idea that you can have more than one transition. This method was presumably one that was used in Tibet many years ago. Of course, it's more probable that they'd use the MO technique of dice work. Here's the good aspect of playing Devil's advocate, you can do whatever you want when it comes to using the I Ching. Once you find something that resonates with you and works, grab it. Don't be afraid of changing it up on a whim. The enemy of free thought and good divination is pedantic thinking. Let us know what you come up with! Thank you!
