Good Idea. I usually Mix them into the batter and use a ladle to scoop them onto the grill. I also use smashed up bananas and make Banana Pancakes! Confectioners sugar to sprinkle on top.

Another advantage to Chef John's method is the ability to make pancakes from one batch with and without blueberries, for when you're cooking breakfast for a group. For example, my wife and daughter don't like blueberries in their pancakes, but I love them.
The title of this video reminded me why l love the english language so much, John used the word 'Blueberry' as a verb without needing to add a single letter; which, in fact, begins with shakespeare who did it to no end. Also, the video was a very useful tip, of course!! :D
Tip: use wild blueberries, which are smaller but much more flavorful. Delicious! They're available only in season, and easiest to find in places like Maine and other northern regions. They can be found out of season in dried form - still flavorful but no juice, of course, so they could be mixed with the standard blueberries. Real maple syrup and real wild blueberries win every time.
I found another reason to try this method instead of mixing the blueberries into the batter. When mixing blueberries into the batter, the pancakes will be much more difficult to turn over with a spatula without sticking, because some blueberries will interfere with the sliding motion of the spatula to tear the rest of the pancake from the fried skin in contact with the pan. So, your pancakes have a higher chance of tearing apart due to adding the blueberries in the beginning. Putting the blueberries on top while the batter is in the pan should avoid that problem. Since all the blueberries are on the top, there is no problem turning the pancake the first time. Since the pancake will be more cooked when you slide the spatula under the second side, it should hold together better, even if the blueberries are directly in contact with the pan. Another solution to this problem could be to use a non-stick pan.

Blueberry pancakes are the best! They're so tasty I don't even use syrup; just a little butter and they're good to go.
We do the same with muffins. But you can also do it both ways for better look and taste. In the batter and on the skillet.
