    You mentioned looping a few times in this video, but Minecraft's music doesn't do that! Because Minecraft's default state is silence, with the music popping in every 10 minutes or so or if the player plays one of the in-game records, the soundtrack is written the same as any normal composition.

      @sethburchill2631 ปีที่แล้ว +114

      Honestly, I disagree. Raine’s music is objectively good music and is obviously fit for other games (ex: Celeste), but it does not embody Minecraft as a game nor does it give enough respect Daniel Rosenfeld’s legacy. I’m not sure what her intentions were, but it sounds like she wanted to take the music in another direction-away from the unforgettable and defining sound of C418’s original soundtrack.

    • @_oceanstar
      @_oceanstar ปีที่แล้ว +169

      @@sethburchill2631C418's music can be unforgettable and defining while still in the presence of other styles. Adding new music doesn't detract from the old- it only recontextualizes it, as time does. And that music is already in different context than it was, having gained additional connotations through the decade of memories attached to it.
      Minecraft is, fundamentally, a different game now, with a different identity. The people who make it, too, are a core part of what the game is- to force an artist to the visions of people who aren't even present anymore is stifling.
      C418's music was for a minimalist indie survival game. Minecraft isn't that game anymore. Lena Raine didn't conspire to redefine Minecraft through music, she just made music to fit the game that Minecraft is now, with the expected level of production that that entails. Sure, that means there's a greater degree of thematic and stylistic variation within the score, but that's hardly a bad thing, and I'd argue that C418 and Lena Raine's tracks emphasize different themes and aspects of them that are equally valid parts of the game's identity. C418's music has the lonely, almost empty nostalgia of the memories it created- while Lena Raine's highlights the bittersweetness of those memories from the perspective of the present, and the potential the game provides. You cannot have those without the other- they don't subtract through contrast, but add to each other through it.

    • @calamari3707
      @calamari3707 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      @@_oceanstar I was going to respond but you said it so much better than I could have. Lena's music reflects the game and its community as it stands now, and does a very very good job of getting *that* vibe right.

    • @sethburchill2631
      @sethburchill2631 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@_oceanstar well spoken! I totally understand your pov, and I appreciate your response. I actually agree with a lot of what you said here! Minecraft is surely more than just a minimalist indie survival game now - in fact, it didn’t even stay that way for long. Creative Mode, public servers, mods, new games like Story Mode and Dungeons, and all the like came very quickly in succession after the game’s release in 2011. But these additions never interfered with the minimalist survival game that they were built upon. Survival Mode, even through countless updates with new mobs, blocks, and features, remains as a minimalist survival game. It might not be the entirety of Minecraft anymore, but it is indisputably still a large part.
      Survival Mode and Rosenfeld’s original soundtrack both remained untouched for all this time, just like the mode itself did. Even Rosenfeld himself didn’t touch it… Volume Beta, his second soundtrack for Minecraft, was arguably even more of an exploration than Raine’s music - but that’s why those songs are found only in Creative Mode and on the in-game discs, not in Survival Mode. So go ahead! Put Raine’s music in a new Minecraft game, a new mode - heck, most of her songs would play well with Volume Beta in a Creative world. That would be fine! But please, leave it out of Survival, an area of Minecraft that has already been defined. Or, alternatively, have Raine try to make music similar to Volume Alpha for survival mode. Either works.
      I see why you could have the sentiment that the game and its community have completely changed since 2011, but that’s just not true. That old survival game and the people who play it (like me) are still here.
      I don’t understand why everything must be redefined and reworked for a new audience or community. Can we not cherish the old while the new comes in, instead of being out with the old as the new comes to take its place? :/

    I don't think there's a definitive answer as to why; he just liked to do new/different things with his scores, like writing without bar-lines (even when there's a clear metre) or giving strange written instructions to the performers.

    Satie often wrote music with no barlines. I don't think he ever said why, but if he did I wouldn't believe him. He was one of those artists who are so eccentric that you can't tell how much of their behavior is an act. He loved making up absurd titles for his works (such as "Dried-Up Embryos" and "Flabby Preludes for the Dog"). He seemed to be satirizing the very idea of composition as an art, but who knows? I think of him as the David Lynch of French music.
