The first house on Dolan Drive, directly behind the Foot Doctor building was My Dad's Uncle's House (My Grandfather's Brother). Before he bought that house he lived across the street from Elvis on Audubon Drive. He bought the house in 1963 when it was built and he said Elvis teased him about following him and being determined on being his neighbor. He was friends with Elvis and Vernon from the time Elvis bought the Audubon house until their deaths. I remember my Grandfather taking us to visit him when I was 9 or 10 years old which would have been 1973 or 74. We walked from his house to the Graceland Gates (hoping to get to meet Elvis). The Gates were open and we walked up the drive to the front door and there was a Security Guard sitting on one of the white benches in front of the front steps. He told us that Elvis wasn't there and he was out on Tour and that's why the Gates were open. We talked with the Guard and he let us walk around a bit. That was the Only time I ever went to Memphis while Elvis was alive, I was only 13 years old when Elvis died. I saw my Great Uncle at my Grandfather's house when I was about 17 and I talked to him about Elvis and he said that he definitely would have set it up for us to meet Elvis. Also my Grandmother's Nephew was Bobby Wood piano player in the Memphis Sessions. When I think of the fact that I have two relatives that knew Elvis and the possibility that was there to be able to meet him. I was just too young back then. If Elvis would have lived longer to where I was old enough to be determined to make it happen, maybe I could have eventually met him.

A really great story. Your grandfather's brother was so fortunate to have been Elvis' neighbor for so many years. How precious that Elvis teased him about following him and insisting on being his neighbor. Elvis was so kind and always had a great sense of humor. Thank you for sharing.

TY I never get tired of Elvis stories so very fascinating
It'll be a sad day if they ever get rid of Graceland I pray Lisa Marie matures enough to keep up the tradition that her mother Priscilla has kept alive

I think that LOCA LISA MARIE NO MATURING COMMON SENSE IN HER ADULT LIFE....ITS A SHAME THAT SHE IS NOT SEEING AROUND HER MEMPHIS GRACELAND HOME. SHE WON'T CONTINUE HER FATHERS ELVIS ICON TRADITION.
HER INMATURITY IS NOT THERE. HOPING THAT KEEPS UP THIS BEAUTIFULLY ELVISICON IPKEEP FOREVER TO PASS IT ON TO HER CHILDREN...!!!

Oooooh, how I love this! Lol I have a tiny gate story. Around 1993 or '94, I was at the gates late one night. The 2 security guys at the guard shack realized what a die hard Elvis fan I was and they walked down the side of the fence and came back with pieces of the rock fencing for me to keep. I have about 5 pieces of it to this day. They also told me they thought the barn was haunted. I didn't have the nerve to jump the fence or anything but I have no doubt I would have back when EP was alive (well, I was 6 when he died so....) lol

Not trying to be a know it all but I have come out of the occult before my conversion to Christ. In reading the Word on the subject of witchcraft practises /occult there are familiar spirits ( demons ) & as the demonic fallen angels are liars & deceivers any haunted buildings or locations are just that demons & not ghost activity of deceased people. Demons's trick is to have people think they are contacting a dead relative or whoever. Demons know the history of the deceased so if a psychic is getting messages to pass on to the hearer the info can be very specific thus the hearer will be totally amazed. Elvis is not in the barn. He is hopefully with The Lord & not in the other place the unsaved go.

Al A Hold up! I was saved when I was 11 and I don’t believe in this kind of thing. I was only repeating what they said in fun. The gate guys were just meaning that they had strange experiences out there. It was light hearted.

I see that we have something in common . I hopped it in March 1978. Uncle Vester was expecting me, but I did not know that at the time. It was very hard to run fast in stacks-shoes. Uncle Vester was very understanding and nice to me and invited me into the guard shack with him. He treated me so kindly.

Another awesome video! Billy on the Beat!!A friend and I in 1980 parked behind SouthFork and jumped the fence. It was daytime. Hung out in the barns mostly. Biggest surprise (other than being seen) was how small the pool was. I went to Graceland in 1984. If I recall right, it was Easter, and very few people were there. Seems like only five or so of us when up to the house by shuttle. It was great because there was no rush or time limit. I remember downstairs in the TV room ( black & yellow) the tour guide was there and explained the paint was still the original but soon was going to be restored. Also we went through the bus. They had cut a exit door in the back of the bus. And had some burnt money framed in glass. That was found behind the panel. I don’t recall the amount but seems to me it was 75k. But don’t hold me to that. It was and awesome tour. Also the shuttle driver said he was Elvis cousin, he had sideburns like Elvis. It could have been Billy Smith, but I didn’t know who Billy was at the time really, and don’t recall him looking like Billy. Mostly because so few people and got to hang out a long time in places. I love this story Billy. My guess would be they held you in the guard house while they investigated the grounds, just has a precaution that you did something or planted something or whatever. IMHO you put out the best Elvis videos Currently than any other does. That’s why when you post a new one I think to myself “ Billy on the Beat, this should be exciting “ thanks for taking us with you on your journey.

Great story and I did it too, Billy, at approximately the same time. Actually, I believe it was in 1986. And I didn't have a camera, and it was my first time there, but the feeling I had was overwhelming. I think only you and real fans can understand. When, at first, my heart was racing only because I was so overcome and from the pictures of Graceland, too - coming from Maryland - I had always envisioned it being out in the country. Now, I understand it originally was, but slowly but surely got penned in. I think that's probably why so many people ask if that's really it who've never been, before.
The funny thing is, too, is that I am the least phased by a person who is described as a 'star,' so to speak, yet I remember that night thinking..."My God, this is where Elvis was." So what I did, as best I remember, is almost exactly what you did, hopping the fence in that same area and then actually doing a military crawl up to the gravesite area. I even remember stopping to rest and laying my head on the ground and praying: "Dear God, don't let me get arrested and ruin my chances for a good career," given I was a teen at the time.
While no one saw me, and I eventually heard some voices - but wasn't sure where they came from - however they scared me to death and I hightailed it out of there. I didn't have to worry about going back to a parked car, either, as my dad was cool enough to be a part of this crazy idea of mine and I had him drop me off; take the car down Dolan and I told him to park about a block or two down from Vernon's house and I would be back in 30 minutes.
So meet him back at the car, I did, and then he and I went back to the hotel where I regaled both my mom and girlfriend on the trip, with my story, and laid in bed all night - eyes wide opened - until finally falling asleep at 6 a.m., perhaps happier than I had ever been up until that point in time. lol

Great Story Christopher.. It was an overwhelming feeling to get over that fence and explore.. I had been dreaming of going there for about 10 years and I was finally there I had to go over and see what was there.. Thanks for the story..

      @christophertyler5544 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

NP, I enjoy sharing these fond memories. And, ya, my Dad, mom and girlfriend at the time, all thought I was crazy, but it's actually a great family story to look back on now. Thanks for helping me reminisce. That's the beauty of what you do, I believe, as I think a lot of us have probably thought or done a lot of similar things and you provide a forum wherein others feel comfortable sharing their different experiences. Hopefully one day we can meet and sit around and swap stories over dinner.
I don't think you and I are that far apart in years, either, but you remind me of my dad to a certain extent. He was an aerospace engineer and not quite as outgoing as you, and he was a Sinatra guy, but he also recognized Elvis was great and would do anything for me. While on that trip, as I think all 4 of us went to Graceland the next day, my ordinarily quiet, mathematics inclined Dad surprised me by pulling out a pair of those plastic Elvis Aviators that they were making a killing on, at $20 each - back in the day - and would be instantly transformed doing these Elvis karate chops.
It just seems like something funny you might do, plus with him taking me off guard by doing it - and typically not wanting to be in the limelight - it was something you had to see and cracked me up. God, I even think it may be on video somewhere, but sometimes I get my years mixed up. I'll take a look for it, if I can find the time, as I think it's something you would enjoy seeing given the background. God bless Billy!!! ~ Your faithful friend, ~ Chris

What a great story, Billy! Thanks for sharing it with us. Speaking of hot temperatures in July 1988; the temperatures were hot the summer before when I made my one and only journey to Graceland. Of course, the land you point out across from Elvis Presley Boulevard was full of shops, and the museums, and I recall my very first meal upon arrival on Elvis Presley Boulevard was at the "Heartbreak Hotel Restaurant." Now , like you, I am searching for those old pictures from that trip.

Great video. Oddly enough, my family and I were there that same weekend before the 4th of July that year. I was 17. We had been on a two week cross country vacation and our final stop was Graceland before we drove on into Chattanooga. I went back in 2005 (17 years later) and a lot had changed on the property. My wife and I had planned to visit in early March of this year but the Coronavirus put a hold on our plans. Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy your stories and insight.

You are too funny. I can’t believe you jumped the fence. My second visit was in 1988 so yeah I saw all his cars in the back, his bus across the street and met Uncle Vester. I liked it then because it was more like Elvis left it. Loved your story. Keep them coming.

I couldn't stop laughing when you said "I tightened up and jumped that fence right there." Wow, you were an even bigger fan than what I thought 😄 Did the men talk to you much, while you were in the guard shack? And you went all by yourself. I would have carried a friend, but..then, I wouldn't have had the nerve, like you. I bet you were fresh out of high school. Thanks for sharing, Spa Guy! Do you mind if I call you, Billy? Hope you & your wife are having a great week!

In 1988 I was 23 years old with a great job that I stayed at until the end of 1999 and on vacation with my wife of over a year.. I left her in the room and she knew what I was going to do... I vaguely recall being in the guard shack and was nervous I was going to jail and thankful when they let me go.. God Bless You and you have a Great week as well.. Spa Guy

Love this story! To be honest, I’m very impressed that you’re comfortable walking around in that area at night these days. Lifelong Memphian here, and I wouldn’t be caught out in Whitehaven at night these days. It looks like it’s very well lit around Graceland at night, but still…I trust you’re packing at all times! Be well.

This is dixie from texas, my parents in 1989 took me to graceland on tour for my wedding present. I was 29 yrs old my one and only marriage we are still married, but getting back to graceland, i was so excited my parents surprised me. So we took tour i would look at everything, i stayed in the jungle room i know for 30 minutes just looking and realizing i was in graceland i did this with every room, so i thought i am going to get some leaves off the lawn and
Pull up some of the grass so i would have a souviners, that elvis was here, iam on the lawn mind you the only one on the lawn, you cannot go past the ropes, i went under the ropes went on the lawn real fast, security came running over to me saying miss no one on the lawn, but i got my leaves and some green grass and i have it in my photo album of elvis to this day. I gave graceland security having to work to come at me. But i wanted a little something to take home of elvis. I truly miss the most wonderful entertainer,. I have been buy graceland, just driving by
And it looks so run down and the area has gotten down also. I wish the kids of today would have known him.

You can not walk onto my property without activating wireless cameras I’d say about 90% coverage of all areas and 100% anywhere near the house so easily done nowadays. I’d imagine Graceland’s grounds are that well covered now days. They may even have laser grids that if the beam is broken they gotcha. The good olé days are behind us :)

Hilarious. In 1988 I bet you were looking for Elvis. If he was there you wouldn't have been able to tell from the photos you took. Bit fuzzy but very funny.
