    Cheers from a 'Murican in Suffolk with a LHD 2001 Disco 2 V8 and difflock nipple and SRD500070 SLABS unit!

    It makes absolutely sense what are you saying. Just bought a transfer box with diff lock (hopefully will work🤞) for my late 2001 Discovery. I just have to check the SLAB part number and if needed, I'll just order one from Ebay. Great explicit video 👏

    I had a genuine LR parts CDL retro fitted to my 02 D2 didn't cut any wires & it works just fine no problems with SLABS unit. Both CDL & SLABS work perfectly together even in deep mud or sand, it has transformed the off road ability of the D2. My own personal advice (for which I won't be held liable in any way) is to ignore the "folklore" concerning SLABS & just fit a CDL. But beware some transfer boxes don't have the provision for a CDL check first or change the transfer box at your expense.

    Interesting video. Going to have to have a closer look at my 99 D2 V8 as it has the lever which shows the diff lock 🤔 will have to see if it works.

    Very timely video for me. Just considering buying a 2004 Discovery TD5 auto. So are you saying that if you retrofit the CDL on say a 2004 and you select diff lock, the traction control turns off automatically? Is there a sensor that tells the system that diff lock has been selected? Thanks

      Hello thanks for the reply the CDL will work on all DII's so long as the transfer case has it fitted. I believe Land Rover completely stopped putting the CDL on the LT230 around 2001 but reinstated it again a couple of years later. My 01 V8 doesn't have a CDL on the transfer case but but this 99 Td5 in the video does.
      The self leveling antilock breaking system (SLABS) module relies on the switch in the T-Case that indicates CDL is engaged also illuminating the light on the dashboard. On earlier models the SLABS would disabled the Traction Control so you had the choice of using either. On later models around 2002-3 the SLABS was updated by LR to incorporate the TC when diff lock is engaged.
      There is talk of people cutting the wire to the SLABS on their earlier cars to keep the TC active which I think is a bad idea. However for yourself a 2004 should have both the diff lock and the updated SLABS so you will be fine.

    This is a long shot… but I’ve got all the parts to do this exact same mod. Everything BUT the actual mounting bolts for the shifter, any chance you remember what kind they are ?

    Hiya, ive got a 2000 td5 with cdl, wouls i need to find a SLABS unit from a 2004 to allow the TC to work correctly with the CDL? Also are these units plug and play for different vehicles. Thanks

    So I have a 2004 which does not have a CDL fitted from the factory. I have bought a conversion from Ashcroft and I have bought a complete actuator off a 300 tdi from ebay. When I do the clutch I am going to fit the lock and actuator. But I am concerned now about what you were saying about the traction control fighting with the locked diff, so how do I de-activate the traction control when I engage the CDL, because presumably mine won't do it automatically as it never had a CDL from new?

    did you put a different deferential on to add the diff lock option? I only have hi/low option

    So what’s better TC or CDL ? I’m not an off reader but do use it on a farm with muddy gates and banks, just changed from an old 300tdi with CDL and not used TC before, just got a 99 td5 .

  • @senseiDi

    Ok so I did not get it straight. I have a td5 2001 no cdl, If I put in one should I do anything bout the traction or leave it as it is?

    I have a '99 D2. It has all the bits built into the centre diff but no lever to engage the diff lock. I put in an electronic actuator. You can see here: th-cam.com/video/NcYaItf6tl4/w-d-xo.html It does not disable the TC when engaged and the TC works fine with CDL engaged.

  • @lpggte
    @lpggte 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok.
    Freelander 1 has TC and a viscous centre coupling.
    Which is a locked centre diff . The FL1 doesn’t disable the TC

  • @TheOzTurkish

    So do you rivet the plate back into place when re fitting?

  • @mikeb53
    @mikeb53 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    On the pre facelift model the reason people cut the wire is because if you start the car with the diff lock engaged the TC wont work, like if you stall it off road. If you engage the diff lock after you start the engine the TC will still work and you'll have the diff lock. The wire gets cut to prevent the TC turning off.

    • @normaneustice1112
      @normaneustice1112 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a new one to me my pre facelift SV D2 doesn't have that fault. I can start up with CDL engaged & the traction control works just fine, also cutting the wire is a big no no with your insurance company, who in their right mind would want to disable their ABS or create a "sneak fault" that might just get you killed while driving on road? If things get that bad then I might suggest a locking rear diff but then another wire has to cut so the TC doesn't go crazy ........ oh wait isn't cutting wires a bad idea? Simple answer fit a make/break switch then you'll have the best of both worlds & stay legal with the insurance company.

    • @mikeb53
      @mikeb53 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@normaneustice1112 The facelift model and the pre facelift have got different SLABS units. Yours may have the facelift version fitted especially if its a late model pre-facelift as land rover were getting ready for the update.
      Please re-read what I put pertaining to cutting the wire, as I don't think you understood. The whole point of cutting the wire is to KEEP the TC and ABS working.

    • @normaneustice1112
      @normaneustice1112 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikeb53 Sorry Mike you're right, I was getting confused with the rear locking diff mod where the ABS wire has to cut in order for the brakes to function properly when the rear diff lock is engaged. My D2 is a Jan 02 build SV so I'm not exactly sure which system is in use,.

    • @mikeb53
      @mikeb53 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@normaneustice1112 No worries, it can get very confusing with all the mods out there for the D2's. But If the TC still works, even if you start it with CDL locked, then you will most likely have the updated facelift SLABS unit. I have a facelift model and mine can be started in diff lock without any ill effects to the ABS and TC also.

    So I have a 99 disco 2 V8 here in North America, I just installed the center diff lock with a socket and 3/8 ratchet extensions, I'm confused on using the CDL and the traction control, should the CDL need to be locked at some point in time would the traction control need to be deactivated?

    • @anti-social-media

      Your absolutely fine as long as your diff lock light comes on when you engage diff lock. The slabs takes this signal and adjusts the TC accordingly either by deactivating it on the older units or applying the revised settings in the later units. The risk comes in cutting the wire to trick the older units into not thinking the diff lock is engaged which puts unnecessary strain on the drive train. Hope that helps :-)

    Hi I'm wanting to put difflock on a 2002 Land Rover discovery 2 td5 ES automatic but hear this transfer box might not have the difflock installed. Rather than take apart the interior area is it possible to locate the nipplefrom under the discovery or is it possible to get a serial number on the box to identify if it has or not. Great video well explained. Thanks
