I love my rat! It’s my go to camping/hiking blade. I put a convex edge on it and strop it every so often like you said and I’ve gone over a year without the need to sharpen it. Ontario did a great job with the d2 on these blades.
Good show old boy! Excellent info! Almost every day the two knives that go in my pocket is my Spyderco manix-2 S30V and my RAT-1 D2. Even when i have a special and pricey new knife in its awfully hard to kick either of those two from my pocket. I usually end up carrying 3 knives for a few days! Lol The RAT-2 is equally good but i just prefer full size knives for most of my use. I do carry my RAT-2 when it makes sense though. Fantastic knives, both models! Still THE knife i recommend for anyone wanting a good knife for less than $60. You just cant beat the design or the quality! It just might be THE greatest overall multi purpose design ever!
I just picked this one (AUS-8) up and have to say that I really like it, it is the perfect fit in my hand and has just enough jimping to not feel like you will loose your grip on the blade, and your right it is fun to play with because of how easy you can flick it open....a must...lol. I basically just picked this knife up to add to my collection and would most likely only carry it if camping or such, It wouldn't get much if any (after the first few times because its the new guy on the block) EDC pocket time with the likes of my Benchmade mini barrage, Spiderco astute or Kershaw leek for starters as its competition. For the $31 (Amazon) I would recommend this little gem to anyone in the market for a EDC pocket knife.
I just purchased one and I usually run with my Spyderco Tenacious, I feel the Rat is just idek, it just feels TOO light in my hand!? I haven’t even used it yet but my expectations are high for this blade everyone seems to adore it
i love my Rat 1 D2, best reasonable priced knife :) But i am not able to sharp it :( King KDS 1000 is not enought, it seems to be too muddy because edge is rounded and dull as fck after sharpenning. I spend lot of time with this knife and i need to find professional sharpener :D other my knifes are razor sharp but R1 D2 is over me.
Try the spyderco sharpmaker setup. Easiest setup i am aware of. Works great. Comes with medium grit sharpening rods and fine rods. Ultra fine also available.

Sad to hear one of the best company went under. I quickly bought a D2R2 before stock goes out. It was the last one I could find in my online stores.

There's a black coated blade model.
I find stainless and D2 sharpens easily with the right tools. Not as fast as a simple carbon knife but no problem.
Why are you doing knife reviews if you can't tell the difference between G10 and Nylon? ...

Suehiro Cerax 1000 waterstone sharpens it with ease.
