But this gentleman stays on topic and gets through a wide range of product in a short time. Always love his videos. The guy just about sells me a knife with every one of them.
I know nothing about this topic, just started to get into it a bit, but already just a few moments in and I know what D2 is! Can I ask how do you keep the blade sharp?
I agree. This guy is short sweet and to the point. BHQ is cool also, but just a little too much giggling and looking back and forth at each other. But they do have some cool gear. So i guess i have to watch both.
I bought an Imperial knife from WalMart about 24 years ago for fishing. It was my second Imperial knife as I lost the first one overboard while fishing. I have managed to keep this knife all those years. It may not hold an edge but it has served me very well and is easy to sharpen and it cost around $15!
I bought my first D2 knife in 1972. It was a Chubby Hueske semi-skinner and I used it for 30 years until a horse went ballistic when he smelled blood and spread the saddle and contents of the saddle bags over a couple acres. I found some of the gear, but not the Hueske, not even with the metal detector I brought up the next weekend. That knife would dress an elk with no problem and with no need to touch up the edge. Yes, it was harder to sharpen than some other steels, but it just took a little more time and effort. However, the edge holding was fantastic. The only problem is that you must keep the blade clean and dry it off after using it. It will rust. I have had several D2 knives since and they have all performed very well. I'm going to buy the SOG for one of my grandkids.
Awesom review and gotta agree, presentation. No stupid comments and opinions. Just "This is what it is, this is how it feels, I can't make up yoir kind for you.."
That's one hell of a line-up for some really nice, and cost effective folders. I have D2 blades which do hold an edge well, and don't require too much care in normal use. That said, after a week on a sailboat you can expect some light surface rust however.
I’m a knife collecting newbie, and this video is right up my alley! So far my OCD is limited to smaller knives with d2 steel only. I’m buying up all the knives I can find. Someday I hope my tastes will broaden, but for right now, keep the d2s coming! Thanks!
Hey David and Knife Center, this was awesome doing a video all on knives in the same steel. Can you do more of these in the future just with other steels? That would be a amazing. Thanks.
My three favorite steels are bucks heat treated 420HC, AUS 8 and D2. The 420HC and AUS 8 are easy to sharpen and hold a edge for a reasonable time and D2 for the same reasons listed in this video.
There was a huge shift when Queens started all their slip joints in D2 It boosted the usability of the blades and their edge retention from the SS they were using But they never got the screaming sharp of their carbon economy line
Just received today, a new Harnds Vanguard, it's a thumb stud one hand opener, that flicks open as fast and smoothly as any flipper, it runs on bronze washers and I gotta say, I've only had it 3-4 hrs so time will tell, but it's just a great looking, butter smooth operating, large edc size knife. The blade is a hair shy or 1/16" shy of 4", of thick D2 and finally believe it or not the spine of the is champfered off. A home run for sure at $32 on Amazon
I’ve been carrying a Camillus Cuda Max for years and I just love them. They are also D2 and they have a large blade but are very thin and easy to carry. Would love your opinion of the knife. It’s not cheap tho.
I didn't know they came out with a Kershaw Emerson with D2. Very cool. It's cool to see Kershaw finally offering something besides 8cr13mov on the Kershaw Emerson's. I wonder if they have one with a coated D2 blade? Coated D2 blades are less likely to have corrosion issues.
Dave, the Rat might not be the sexiest, but it will be ergonomically one of the best users. My hand really locks into the knife and when you pick it up, it becomes apparent how you’re supposed to use it. The jimping is well done. I just wish they put slightly more aggressive texture into the frn scales. I really like the Wyvern and the Kendo. I have a Thorn and a Naja and these companies are resetting the quality benchmarks at this range. However when I need a hard use beater for work, the Rat is always on my short list for outdoor tasks. Oh you forgot the CJRB Centros. That might be my next knife.
I got the Kershaw Highball. A great little knife that looks great and feels good in the hand. An option to get the XL too if you need a bigger knife. Definitely recommend.
I am so glad I found this video. I was looking for a decent, but cheaper knife. Thanks to you, I found out about CJRB. Great reviews and just what I was looking for and in the price range. Thank you.
Excellent information my friend. Been ordering off and on with you guys for years now. Concise, well laid out information that is EXACTLY what I need, and nothing I don't. Thanks for not fluffing this stuff.
Outstanding presentation. You should do this more often. Kept my attention the entire video and I was looking forward to every knife showcased. Thank you
I would respectfully suggest to try the Bastion 'Brat'. Comparable to the Civivi Courser, but with a D2 blade. I purchased the Bastion Brat about a month ago for around $40. It's truly a great knife and has become my EDC of choice.
I bought the SOG Terminus XR in D2 and crimson G-10. The only reason to buy the more expensive S35VN version is if you like the carbon fibre handle. I personally consider powder steel a bit excessive for folding knives, which for me are disposable in a way. I will usually have a S35VN fix blade as a back up (SOG Pillar or ESEE-4). I get the collectability of premium folders, but I buy powder steel knives that are going to be bomb proof. *proceeds to lose bomb proof knife*
powder stainless steels on folders makes exponentially more sense than a fixed blade. they tend to have lots of edge retention but not a lot of toughness. now, things like 3v or cruwear make sense on a fixed blade, but toughness and edge retention are just as important for folders as fixed blades
I'm seeing this in July of 2020. Along with the great knives you showed us, my friend IF there is a better person to expertly show and describe knives, he or she will have to get in line behind you. I am 69+ and have a little OCPD going on so I can appreciate a talented person regardless what they do. You Are the man when showing knives and this solo presentation probably suits you best. I wouldn't want to see you doing your thing and having others butting in while your talking. I subbed as soon as the vid was over and rang the bell as well :). Look forward to more videos.
Now you're talkin David!!!great list. everybody loves a great deal. My only problem now is that I feel that I have to have half the knives on that list.
I like the Rat 1 in D2 and the Rat 2 in D2 with carbon fiber scales (called the R2D2). I chose the Civivi Elementum with micarta scales because of city knife laws. I like the Civivi better than the Ontario Rat for work because the liners are stainless on it. My Rat got water between the scales and the liner and started rust. Will probably be a while before it is a problem though.
Just sayin' Regarding the difference between a wharncliffe and sheepfoot. I think the Cold Steel Tuff is a classic Wharncliff as for sheep foot I see that profile mostly on rigger's knives (folders and fix blade) like Myerchin and part of the kit on multiple blade folders like "swiss army" and boy scout knives. Wharncliff has a more sweeping drop in the point; a sheep foot the point drops hard the tip to me resembles those blunt tip scissors we used in grade school. The reason for the sheepfoot on a rigger's knife (that is to say a fixed blade, folders are not very practical at sea) is that sailors had to work cordage on the ship's deck in the directions at the same time as well as working hindered high up. Pointed knives are very dangerous in those circumstances. I have not seen a one handed folding rigger. If you ship out you'll probably be better off with a cheap knife either you'll lose it overboard or one of your mates will steal it.
The Bestech's are all nice knives. My Scimitar uses a single screw to hold the clip on and if it loosens it can damage the slot that keeps the clip straight.
I have a non d2 large pilar, one of my favorite designs, i recently picked up the sog terminus in d2, awesome knife, not sure why its not being recommended more.
The Pull-Out King deems this selection as great. We would like the Kershaw Emerson if it didn't have that 'Wave' projection coming out the top of the blade, though.
I’ve thought D2 was the best steel for my edc knives for years! Carried my Benchmade mini grip with a D2 blade for a few years until I was gifted a good auto knife.
SOG omega springs break easily. I'm on my third SOG Terminus due to broken omega springs. SOG has a great warranty but its a pain to have to pay to ship a knife back so often... I'd avoid it and go with a CJRB or CRKT.
I bought two of the Kershaw Emerson folders for a bargain price. Both of them bit me. They’re both at the bottom of my dam. I’ll hang on to my RAT 1 though.
I like that micarda look with a shiny blade . The light micarda with worn looking lighter accents against the bright steel is a really pretty knife . Cjrb there ya go ..feldspar large , or small bit lose the clip 🙄
Thank you so much for this vid. The info was presented extremely well n will help me n many of my friends make an informed decision as we have been looking for reasonable priced, quality, d2 folders. I'm so sick of all the reviews of ridiculously overpriced folders that in some cases, are lower quality than the fantastic knives you have shown here. A folder is a tool, paying $300 for one, unless I'm a 'collector' is insane, I don't care what steel it is. I never subscribed to the 'my knife is cooler n more expensive than yours' mentality. Thanks again, Be Blessed.
Both are hard to sharpen. For regular folk, not a knife-nut D2/S30V/S35VN are way too hard. Then if I cant resharpen my EDC on the side window of my car or bottom of my mug, then it's worth... less. AUS8, 9Cr, 440C, Sandvik - way better for normal folk.
Blakehx 2000 grit wet or dry sand paper. You can get it most anywhere. WalMart and most hardware stores have it. On a nice flat surface with a little oil, while maintaining angle move blade in a circular motion. Some sharpeners tend to round the point over time. I find it easy to maintain the point using the above method. If the edge needs more than a touch you can use courser grits. You can pretty much get a knife sharp enough that hair will jump out of the way of it. Much cheaper than stones or other types of sharpeners and never needs dressing.
The Talla is definitely a wharncliffe. Straight edge, straight angled tip is the definition of a wharncliffe. Sheepsfoot has a curved tip and usually a curved edge.
The secret to affordable D2 Sharpening is Non Loading SiC Wet/Dry Sandpaper in various grits and a mouse pad. Then to finish the edge. Take the slurry you made from the sandpaper. Place the Slurry on a clean leather strop. Begin Stropping the blade.
Or just use a 300-400 medium grit diamond stone. I only use real diamonds in my stropping 5000 grit/4 micron diamond compound. An abrasive engineer told me to use real diamonds, manmade are rounded off. Same price, it is how the diamond is attached to the stone that's expensive.
@@MrRourk Look at the cheaper EZE LAP stones, run under $20 and a Tech Diamond Tools choose from 2000 grit to 14,000 grit, 50% concentration (heavy) 5 gram syringe is $11 for whatever grit you want to finish with. Now how does that compare to buying a bunch of silicon wet dry sandpaper over 5 years? That is how long the diamond items will last and time is money too vs. messing with sandpaper and the mess. You use very little compound once the leather has built some up. My syringes are 5 years old and I have about a 1/4 left. I make knives and sometimes put a mirror finish on a small one by hand. Diamond is very aggressive and after I wet grind to 600 grit I hand rub it with 1200 grit sandpaper with diamond compound mixed in. After that it is strictly leather and diamond to 1 micron-14,000/16,000 grit. Hand rubbing is the only way you can put a mirror polish on certain steels like D2, if you use a buffer you get an orange peel effect. Now you know more than you even wanted to know.
I got a d2 knife thats sht... i assume it was heat treated terribly or maybe just not even d2 but its extremely hard to sharpen and dulls extremely fast...
I like the steel will and the sog🙂 I’ve had a knife in D2 though and it kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. It took time to sharpen and I always got micro chips. Maybe I had a lemon
There are three ways to temper a D2 blade. At 450 for 2 hours 2x, gives a hard brittle edge, even with cryo in liquid nitrogen it is still chippy. I temper my fixed blades at 1000 degrees with a LN quench for 24 hours then temper again at 1000 degrees a 2nd time for 2 hours and knife is done. The 1000 temper raises the hardness back up, but imparts toughness. Is it hard to sharpen? At 60-61 hard yes, but that is mostly the vanadium carbides which are actually 0.2 points harder on the Mohs scale than tungsten carbide. As you can see these cheaply heat treated blades from China mostly are not properly heat treated and you can tell because they're too cheap and chip, mine won't unless you abuse them. For any high vanadium steel buy a 400 grit diamond sharpener, a good one and after you've formed a proper bevel then use a hard ceramic or Buck Stone, then strop using 2000 grit diamond compound on leather, then use 5000 compound on a flat hardwood board. For a good working or butcher's edge stop at 1200 or 800 grit.
I live in CNY and surprisingly I found out the hard way that I have to keep up on oiling my D2 or it pits. Parents and kids be aware that Your d2 blade may be rusty if you don’t care for it.
If you have a D2 knife that rusts easily it isn't D2. I make D2 fillet knives used in saltwater ht to HRC60-61 with a 1000 temper for toughness. I use American made Carpenter D2 with 12% chromium, stainless is 13%. I haven't had one customer return a blade with rust or pits. I'd bet you have chinesium D2.
A lot of people like them, but I've been disappointed with them. I've ordered two different models and ended up returning both. The actions were really poor. Maybe I just got unlucky, I don't know, but it turned me off the brand. I've been much happier with Bestech and Civivi. They both have excellent fit and finish in the models I have and their actions are superb.
@@LarryEMorse The action was gritty and stiff. I might have been able to take it apart and work on it, but I felt it was unacceptable to get it out of the box and it being that bad, so I returned it and got my money back. Same exact thing happened with the piercer I bought. Sent it back as well. So I've ignored Steel Will since. Maybe I just got unlucky but with other brands that I've been happy with, Real Steel, Bestech to name a couple, in the same price range, I don't feel I want to take another chance with Steel Will.
Being a sheepsfoot snob, I would call the "Talla" a modified warn cliff blade shape. If I was getting fancy i would call it a "cyber cliff" blade shape.
I’ve got a pair of Kershaw-Emerson’s (one for each pocket, and I love them, glad they moved to D2), but I like that CF Crag, and the Tomahawk (how come you didn’t let me see you open it?). These knives are right up my alley.
I like David, I ordered a knife just because it was from him! Very professional and I believe he knows what hes talking about, nice job David!!!🗡🔪🗡🔪🗡🔪🗡🔪

I bought my first D2 knife in 1972. What kind of blade is the Talla? Easy: It's a Wharnfoot. Or is it a Sheepscliff?
The sog terminus looks like a good size edc. I like that it is in D2 , I think I'm going to have to get one of them.

@@HanSolo__it takes me just as long to sharpen 9cr18mov as it does s30v on my sharpening system bc of how soft the 9cr is
I bought a D2 knife for 18 dollars dang good knife
You sir, are the Sean Evans of blades. Great presentation!
Thanks for the good info! What’s the best inexpensive sharpener?
I'd like to know too

2000 grit wet or dry sand paper.
Can we please have a list? Thank you
The Talla is definitely a wharncliffe. Straight edge, straight angled tip is the definition of a wharncliffe. Sheepsfoot has a curved tip and usually a curved edge.
The secret to affordable D2 Sharpening is
Non Loading SiC Wet/Dry Sandpaper in various grits and a mouse pad.
@@MountainFisher it says affordable :)
Very nice job. I really enjoy your videos.
i'm not even that big on knives but i can listen to DCA all day
I got a d2 knife thats sht... i assume it was heat treated terribly or maybe just not even d2 but its extremely hard to sharpen and dulls extremely fast...
I like the steel will and the sog🙂 I’ve had a knife in D2 though and it kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. It took time to sharpen and I always got micro chips. Maybe I had a lemon
Mine chipped too
Same here
There are three ways to temper a D2 blade.
What's a good deep-carry, lightweight flipper EDC?
Why can’t I find the sw tenet on the site? Fell in love with it and felt so disappointed when I couldn’t find it
Looks like they discontinued it. That's a shame! Was a very nice blade.
Love the review style m8
I live in CNY and surprisingly I found out the hard way that I have to keep up on oiling my D2 or it pits. Parents and kids be aware that Your d2 blade may be rusty if you don’t care for it.
If you have a D2 knife that rusts easily it isn't D2. I make D2 fillet knives used in saltwater ht to HRC60-61 with a 1000 temper for toughness. I use American made Carpenter D2 with 12% chromium, stainless is 13%. I haven't had one customer return a blade with rust or pits. I'd bet you have chinesium D2.
God I love straight to the meat videos. This guy's awesome.
I like the look of those Steel Will knives, thanks for featuring them, never heard of that brand before!
@@abc456f did you try the Intrigue? It works for me.
@@LarryEMorse No...I had a cutjack in D2 and a piercer.
@@abc456f Man, the Cutjack is really popular. Haven't seen it but what was wrong with yours?
@@LarryEMorse The action was gritty and stiff. I might have been able to take it apart and work on it, but I felt it was unacceptable to get it out of the box and it being that bad, so I returned it and got my money back. Same exact thing happened with the piercer I bought. Sent it back as well. So I've ignored Steel Will since. Maybe I just got unlucky but with other brands that I've been happy with, Real Steel, Bestech to name a couple, in the same price range, I don't feel I want to take another chance with Steel Will.
Is the feldspar d2 feom carb and I hear those civivis r nice ?
D2 is my favorite !!
What’s your favorite knife band that cost under 50$
Being a sheepsfoot snob, I would call the "Talla" a modified warn cliff blade shape. If I was getting fancy i would call it a "cyber cliff" blade shape.
I think the Harnds Maverick should be on this list. 3 different variations but all 3 are D2 at $42.
Great writing and great production!
Manly Peak is my choice for a D2 pocket knife
I’ve got a pair of Kershaw-Emerson’s (one for each pocket, and I love them, glad they moved to D2), but I like that CF Crag, and the Tomahawk (how come you didn’t let me see you open it?). These knives are right up my alley.
Carry an Ontario RAT II with AUS 8 steel. Just drop it into my right pocket. The RAT I is too large for EDC inside my pocket.
Avispa for me... love this knife
I like them all really good looking knives on this list
I like David, I ordered a knife just because it was from him! Very professional and I believe he knows what hes talking about, nice job David!!!🗡🔪🗡🔪🗡🔪🗡🔪
The cjrb blade shape is probably a sheepclif
Good presentation as usual!!!!! Grant B. Thanks!!!
Any chance you can do a list of liner lock knives that offer better steel than D2?
Dewalt tanto folding blade is the goat
Straight to the Point!
I reckon you could gravity assist open the terminus as well
Thanks for this video man! I legit just asked my friends on facebook for some input on best durable pocket knife without costing $100. LOL!! I'm leaning towards that Kershaw Emerson you showed in this vid.
It is a fine blade!
It's a great upgrade from 8cr14mov. Holds an edge about twice as long.
