- Ruff Mix Master Gordie makes his appearance in today's episode and he brought his dad, Grammy Award Winning Mix Engineer Alex Tumay. Tune in as we take a long overdue deep dive with Multi-Platinum Mix Engineer, Alex Tumay!
BIO:
Alex Tumay is a mixing and recording engineer based in NYC. He began his music career in Atlanta, first working under Ben Allen at Soapbox Studios and Maze & Solitaire Studio before becoming the Head Engineer and Tech at DARP Studios. There he connected with a group of upcoming artists and producers including Young Thug, Metro Boomin and 808 Mafia, and together they fostered a creative environment that became the birthing ground of the new Atlanta sound. After leaving DARP in 2015, Alex reconnected with Travis Scott and Young Thug to work on Rodeo and Barter 6. Eventually becoming a mixer full time, Alex decided to move to NYC. He has since started the This Sounds Better podcast with Miles Walker and Jason Kingsland, which has a new season premiering in the fall, and has lectured for SXSW and Redbull Music Academy. He now works freelance out of his private studio, “Do What Sounds Good,” in Manhattan. Wanting to provide an affordable alternative to local artists, Alex has decided to open the doors of his studio at a discounted rate, with his assistants running sessions after undergoing training. Some new releases from the past few months include: Young Thug, Vince Staples, Cosima, Nothing Nowhere, Swae Lee, A Boogie, Shoreline Mafia, Cousin Stizz, Ugly God, Bazzi, Rico Nasty, and Ness Nite.

These guys are dropping enormous gems everyone stop complaining and whining they didn’t name drop their whole template, change your mindset. Work harder stop watching people on the internet
Keep watching on the internet but know that it’s just for learning purposes and the key is practice and ear training, knowing what the plugins do, knowing how to add or take out what you want and don’t want with what you have. Eventually you’ll nail it
yup, no template is gonna help you shit untill you manage to really grasp the concepts they’re talking about on here
i think the reason for his keeping tips secret (and p much everyone else who does this) is due to a distorted worldview that says everyone earns what they have through hard work alone (or almost exclusively hard work). This would cause him to feel like he shouldn't tell his mixing secrets unless he is given something in return because he "figured out those secrets because of his hard work alone". In reality, he found himself in circumstances that he had almost no control over, and it is only because of those circumstances that he was able to discover how to mix really well. It would be nice of him to share tips that he only discovered due to the fortunate circumstances he found himself in with other people who are not in those circumstances. He also worked hard for sure, I'm not saying he didn't. But many artists have this superiority complex where they think they got to where they are all on their own. So much of where we find ourselves is due to things totally out of our control. Sharing experience and knowledge is the best way for us to grow together.
The world has been waiting
Alex Tumay blocked me on Instagram because I didn't agree with him about Batman.
LOL
what was the argument about
What about Batman? lol
He's a hothead, well known fact
I got kicked out of his discord for making a joke about the lady from resident evil village, Alex and his whole community a bit too sensitive, so i totally believe you lmao
I'm stuck in this runner position where all I do is mostly clean. It's really high profile clients but I wish I had a place where I could actually sit in room and learn :/ if you're in a spot like that dont take it for granted!
Are you still in that position?
Damn bro get out and get another internship
Don't take it for granted, or don't overvalue the position? It sounds like an insane foot in the door, but if you are stuck with no room for growth, it could be bade.
Also the place to sit and learn is wherever your setup is, to learn from the masters is another story ofc... But you don't need to intern for any studio in order to make great sounding records. To book high paying clients, yeah I guess another story again, but first and foremost, get good.
*I am a random person/nobody
This man is not aware of how brilliant he is! Just cuz shit is simple it doesn't reduce the level of brilliance he has! This dude pioneered a whole flow, by trying, throwing paint at a canvas because of the pressure he was under during those sessions! GOAT contender
There will never be enough videos of Alex tumay
This dude is solid and really talented. Support his podcast too it's called "this sounds better" on sreaming services. He even went to the instagram post after filming this and personally answered the questions they didn't get to.
Audient ID4! Excellent gear for cheap, I'm so blessed thatperson at the music store had a clue what they recommended to me. Now I can se professionals using it, I definitely know why. Sound quality is out of this world for the price.
This is the best interview I've watched this year! So many interesting advises and unique approaches to music from this video!

Tumay the Goat
Great interview! it would be cool if you guys could get your guests to answer with gear/ plugin options during batters box instead of getting vague answers like, "loud" & "louder". It'd help the audience discover new plugins and companies that they may not have heard of. Just a small suggestion. Thanks again for doing what you do!
been waiting for this
thank yall for doing this interview!
great interview really well done and full of gems thank you
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, this episode hits hard. I've been fortunate enough to get relatively good at audio engineering with a cheap laptop, and i still have a ton of room to improve before dropping huge money into more expensive gear.
Very good! Thanks fellas
