    It's insane how I've been trying to mix my vocals to sound good for so long and Jaycen drops the most basic vocal chain and it made such a huge difference.
    ( EQ hipass 50hz - RVOX - EQ low shelf 300hz - Multiband Comp - Air EQ --- Parallel Comp)

  • @dexterbartis3216
    @dexterbartis3216 6 ปีที่แล้ว +91

    Parallel compress the vocal and then automate it so sometimes it sits in your face and sometimes it doesn't?? Why have I never thought of that! This video is GOLD!

      puppiesinspace Definitely not true ten years or so back and before that, before daw’s were so powerful.
      As far as every thing coming down to connections and soft skills ... that’s literally every single area in life, no exceptions. Talent is pretty common. Unless you have that next level 1% talent, it won’t matter if you can’t network, communicate, and find a way to navigate your way in. Having the soft skills to go with talent is rare. The former is probably more important than the latter.
      Furthermore, I could give you a long list of bands and artists throughout history that had a certain sound during a period working with a famous engineer/producer, and then sounding like shit when they stopped working with that engineer. Back in the day, it was very noticeable the difference between engineers and there was incredible variability. Nowadays, I would say everything is closer to sounding the same with digital technology, but there is a few percentage point difference that separates the pro-level from the amateur, and it’s apparent to trained ears that set the industry standards. What guys like Jaycen, Mike Dean, Tumay (if we are talking modern hip hop) do is give songs those last percentage points of separation, and they continue to set the standard for how loud a track can be commercially. If you caught that tip from Jaycen in here ... there is definitely some artistry and expertise that go along with their connections and social skills.

    I honestly think this is testament to how much of a genius Dave is that he mentored someone like Jaycen and how much of a beast at mixing he really. I think if I had watched this video at the beginning of my Audio Engineering career in 2013 I think I would have progressed a lot faster, particularly what Jaycen says about the speed of technology and listening to the 'kids'.
    I spent years trying to follow the lessons and technical ideologies taught to me at University (which I am still thankful for learning) but the fact was my mixes and not even CLOSE to the right pulse. Watching Pensado's Place for free is honestly such a blessing, thank you guys for sharing all this knowlege with :D

By song I mean the song in it's entirety. No need to even solo out instruments and talk about individual effects, but to just discuss how particular effects glued the mix together. Thanks!

    the best mix and master engnrng skills are related to discovery by the ear..and not copy or mimic other persons chain of settings , its all about ....knowing the virtual room in your head and the setup of the elements in that virtual room...ofcorse you got to know how the trumpet or piano reacts in different spaces and ambiances , a burning candle cant give a warmth feeling on a sunny day in your livingroom, unless you make the room dark , and let the temperature drop to a cold environment,, this is how you can mimic a warm an romantic moment in your room in daylight en in the middle of the summer...this is what you do exactly in your image of your mix . 1 tip....never mix around a kick.....instead mix around the vocal!!!

    When asked about Echoes at 49:36 Jaycen says "flip the phase so they`re outside the speaker". I know that there is a setting in Waves H-Delay to switch the Left or Right Phase, but that logically phases out in mono. Is he talking about that or switching the 'whole Phase' if that makes any sense? So switching the whole signal but that wouldn't change anything is it? Would be very happy if someone could explain this! 😊

    • @tp6980
      @tp6980 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just flip one side. Left or Right. See the scope, the wave is going to be horizontally instead of vertical.

    • @tp6980

    I wonder whether he means the Waves RVox or the Renaissance compressor? In his deconstruction of Justin Bieber's 'Baby' for Sound On Sound magazine in 2010, he used the Renaissance. Other producers seem to confuse the two.

    • @xanderpills
      @xanderpills 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garogarogaro Nope. RVox has an exciter to make the vocal feel like it's in your face. And a gate of course.
      And Rcompressor is just a great all-around compressor, especially for vocals. There's the "Warm" sound mode that grabs on vocals really nicely.

      It's not volume riding; he was actually talking about trimming the individual 808 hit; he went on to explain that you can draw in a super-quick volume fade after you get it just right, "and then copy paste it". So it's shortening the 808 a tiny, tiny amount, and then fading it in, rather than trying to manage it with a compressor or other automated tool. It's a great way to work - you can zoom in all the way, see the changes in volume represented as you draw them in, tweak it to hit absolutely perfectly with the kick, then paste the result throughout.

      just sidechain it to the kick

      You can side-chain, of course, but ... he's talking about a much more finely-tuned way of getting the 808 sample out of the way for at most a couple milliseconds, where you can (a) mute the 808 sample entirely for a part of a cycle; (b) draw in a volume curve that's far far shorter than the recovery time of any compressor, so that the 808 hits exactly when you want it, but you just eke out that tiny bit of extra headroom by keeping the front-end of the click entirely with your kick sample, rather than the 808. Hence why he brought it up; everyone side chains, but he feels this gets him an extra degree of control - and loudness - that side-chaining doesn't allow for.
