Finally a review about Fuji Custom Settings…awesome and thank you. I bought my first camera in in 1971 a Nikromat EL 1- lens the 50 macro. Fast forward to 2017 when I purchased a used Sony RX100 IV, 28-70mm ( 35 equivalent) zoom. Liberating to have performance and a small package. But I wanted an interchangeable lens camera…almost purchased a full frame Sony. However, after a lot of research jumped all in with the Fuji X-S10 and a 23mm f2. Fantastic little camera. I have been studying on line ( John Peltier) who has great tutorials on the specific Fuji camera you might own and more. But the Custom Settings in addition to the film simulations are fabulous. I have really been able to focus on what type of images I would like create and save them for ease of use in the field. Landscape, Documentary, Street, whatever genre you want. Plus the color, saturation, sharpness, tone, highlight contrast, etc. are all customizable in these programs. You can even bracket exposure, film simulations, etc. should you wish. Of course focus and shooting ( A, S,M etc. priorities are still in play as usual as well while using any of the C1-C4 Custom Settings. This is one heck of a camera with IBIS and advanced features like the T4. It has no Weather sealing rating but I have successfully shot in rain with a plastic bag. No camera is waterproof…if the camera has doors ( they all do ) or exposure to the inner workings through the rear screen they will be susceptible to weather. I cannot say enough about the added film simulations like Eterna, Across & Eterna Bleach Bypass all nice additions. We have a 10 week camping vacation then a trip to Switzerland this year and I cannot wait to start getting creative with my Fuji X-S10.
Mike the custom settings on this little camera are great! With my X-T3 and X-T30 they are only for film simulations and nothing else. Which is a shame. I also can’t do a film sim bracket of film sim recipes that I have set up such a bummer! But you can do it with the X-S10 and the X-T4. I’m glad you like the channel, please subscribe if you have not already. Thanks for watching.
Great video Kirk, I purchased my X-S10 with the 18-55 kit lens which is a pretty good lens but I love it with the 70-300 which to me is an amazing lens that rarely leaves my camera.
Hello Sir, I just found your channel and I am very happy about it. Thank you for the superb explanation of custom settings in practice. I shoot for the first time a Fuji Camera, XH2s which I enjoy shooting very much but there is still a lot to understand. So may I please ask, eg. When you set C1 in Aperture Priority, do you also set as a default the Aperture value , which then you will have to change accordingly, or you use the aperture ring as you are shooting and the default number is overrided? I hope my question does not sound silly. Thank you again and of course I happily subscribed.
Flora - I’m not sure. I would think if you have a custom setting set to aperture priority there would be no setting for aperture as you would be adjusting it yourself. I think the best idea is to try it and see what happens. From what I can remember you can set as many functions as you want. To be honest I don’t own an x-s10 I borrowed it from Fuji. I had about two weeks with it and had a great time figuring it all out.
This was very helpful. I set up a TH-cam studio and have everything dialed in both with audio and video and all the lighting and the lens, a Viltrox 23. So when I shoot a quick talking head YT video, I'll just toggle to C1 called YT23. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for the video. I am very confused between this custom setting and setting up custom film simulation. Is this where we also set the custom film simulation? I believe when we setup custom film simulation it will show up alongwith the already available film simulations when we rotate the dial!? Also in other Fujifilm cameras people say the are 7 film simulations that we can setup.
I have the XT4 Xpro3 and a Leica Q2 and SL2S. I am getting this XS10 as I have shot with it before and will see if I like it enough to add to my collection of cameras. I starting to like using manual lenses again using my old minolta lenses on the Xpro 3 and so,e voitlander lenses.
Ony saw 2 reviews on the x mount one was fair other said it is muddy the 35 version. I am using a 325 and 50 and 75 with lens mount, and the two Lanthars are awesome, as is the 1.5 75 MM
Lovely video! And a rare one - there aren't many out there that show the C1 to C4 (or c7 on some other models) in real use. Thank you! About the flippy screen, I also wasn't a fan, and I bought the xs-10 "despite" the screen, not because of it - but actually I've since learned to appreciate it. It's good for shots way over your head, or vertically down, with your arms straight - the regular tilt screens max out at about 45 degrees (downwards), so they don't let you do that. Also, I like to shut the screen away sometimes and pretend I have an x-pro3, or my old film camera. Oh, and as a side point, the xs-10 is one of the few Fujifilm cameras with a properly positioned and sized AF-ON button.
John - Many thanks I’m glad it helped. I can’t wait to have all 7 custom settings “fully” customizable on the X-T5 which I pre-ordered. I can appreciate your accustomed appreciation for the flippy screen. I use the three way tilt for over my head and below my waste shots all the time. Also vertical shots can be done without getting in the way of an L bracket. I’m a retire photojournalist that still does freelance assignments 3 or 4 times a week and the X-T3 with the tilt screen fits my style perfectly.
... and a lo-tech tip for remembering the characteristics of each custom setting: a small Post-It on the back of the camera, underneath that darned flippy screen 😉
Hey Kirk, I’ve recently bought this camera and am looking to go into doing some sport photography. Im still new to Fujifilm having moved from canon. What settings would you recommend for sport?
Hi Jim - You should be ok with this camera. Set it to continuous AF, start with AF custom setting 3 or 1 and experiment, set the drive to high speed (I think it's 8 frames a sec), Set your shutter speed to 1000s never go below 500s, Set you ISO to the ISO that will give you 1000s. Inside you will need fast glass like the 90 f2 or the 50-140 f2.8. Hope this helps.
Nice video, like the custom settings review. As for screens, I love fully articulating screens...had one on my Canon, on my Panasonic, and now on my Fuji XT4...they are so much more useful than just tilting screens PLUS can face the camera when in your bag, thus protecting the screen. BUT, since some folks like tilting screens, I think Fuji would be smart to satisfy both with a combination fully articulating + tilt screen...other brands have done it...the mechanism would be bulkier, but then folks in both camps could use the screen how they liked yet still be able to face it inwards when packed away.
Hi Kirk - going through your Q menu set up I notice you have 16 slots to play with. On my X-S10 Q menu I only have 12... Can you please let me know how to add the 4? I checked everywhere and don't see that option anywhere. Thanks!
just a question, is there a way like from the old fuji cameras where you can have C1-C7 for film simulation? can it be done in XS-10? Just curious. Thank you and a very nice video by the way.
I much prefer the screen on my X-T3 to this one on the X-S10 and the X-T4. I hope Fujifilm keeps making them. Or how about offering the choice? Great Video as always Kirk. Many thanks.
I never got around to doing one of those. I would think it would be pretty easy to setup your favorite focusing aid as part of an overall strategy for using manual lenses.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography I'm not sure it's possible to save the "Shoot Without Lens" option as part of a "C" setting. Have you tried to do that? Thanks.
Thanks for an enjoyable video as always Kirk. I have had my X-S10 since the day it was released and I love ❤️ it. I mostly have the 16-55 f/2.8 lens on my X-S10. It works well with the IBIS on the X-S10. I also have my Custom settings set up similar to you. It really works well. X-S10 Is a fantastic feature packed camera and is great value for money. Like you I don’t like the floppy screen. Might work for vloggers but is annoying for me as a rarely do video. Loved your photos. The 16-80mm is such a versatile lens. Hope to see more X-S10 videos from you.
waitong for mine to arrive, thanks for the Custom tip!!! also planing to glue this baby to my 70-300. also have a x100V for my family memory keeping, and currently selling a xpro3, cant stand the screen... thought i could..
Yes Peter for some its fine. I just don't like the way it works for shooting up high and down low. I can't just lift it up or pull it down like with the X-T3.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography I understand what you are saying as I have XT3, and XT30 but it does give more flexibilty overall - (although for photographs I do prefer the XT3 Screen also) but have no problem using XS10 when I have to - horses for courses!!
Another great video Kirk, with clear explanations. I have a better BW recipe than the Acros and an unusual vintage-look one. I have that for my street photography setting. The advantage of these settings is that we can put everything we need under one setting, for instance my birds-in-flight C1. Everything from shutter speed to drive and focus modes with the simple twist of the knob. I jumped for joy to find the X-H2 has SEVEN custom settings to work with. I can also set the camera to retain OR auto-update the settings. TIP: If you forget exactly which does what, put a Post-It note on the body behind the screen:)
Nice images Kirk, love the 'classic neg' simulation. I love the flippy screen on my X-S10-it helps save your knees when doing low angle shots! Especially useful for vertical low/high angle shots I find. I still haven't tinkered with the Custom Modes yet but will soon. Keep up the good work :-)
Hi, thanks for the great video. There is something I can't figure out with my X-S10: when the dial is in one of the 4 Custom Modes, and the shooting mode is P, the front wheel still controls the Shutter Speed. Why is that? (on the contrary, when the dial is in P, there the Shutter Speed is automatic, so I would expect it to be the same even in C1-C4 with P as shooting mode)
I'm not sure why this is. I'm just guessing here but in P mode if you are in auto ISO you can control either SS or aperture. So if you set the aperture at f8 then your shutter speed will change accordingly. Program is a "smart Program mode".
Nice shots and walk-talk through. I'm considering the X-S10 (as mentioned in the sister video to this due to its size) but I'd have to sacrifice my newly acquired X-H1 to do it so probably won't. ;-)
Hi Darren, yes I use my X-H1 for most of my video work. It’s all shot in 4K. I use Final Cut Pro. I shoot in Classic Chrome film sim instead of Eterna or f-log. It’s just faster for me. Ha, as long as my exposure is right.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography I shoot Classic Chrome as well and edit on FCP too. For some reason your footage renders sharper. I’ll have to toggle some settings on my XT4. Your vids look good tho 👌👌👌

Jay it really was an eye opener for me which I missed the first time around. My bad. Now that the X-T30 ll is out with better firmware etc. I bet that they have made adjustments to how many adjustments can be added to the Custom settings.
