    One of the best educational videos I've seen on TH-cam. Relatively short and to the point, just the way I like my tutorials! My X-S10 arrives tomorrow and I cannot wait to learn how to use it and have an excuse to get out of the house more during these lockdown times :)

    Thanks for the swell presentation, Maarten. I've watched several of your videos. Up until now I've only been using point and shoot cameras, currently Canon G16. I stopped using auto quite a while ago. I shoot mostly landscape photography while on hikes. This will be my first Fujifilm. I was originally drawn to the X-T30, but lately the X-S10 has been calling me more, mainly because of IBIS, better auto focus and low light, and the larger grip, which seems more ergonomic if I get a 55-200. I think I'll begin with an XF 18-55 with either I decide upon. I'll subscribe and look forward to seeing more of you! Cheers, Steve

    Thanks, Marten, for another very informative video. You asked for suggestions on anything you might have missed: Some of your viewers may want to learn more about the new "SP Scene" mode because this is a new feature on an "X-xxx Series" camera. It's a bit awkward to use because you have to go into the Q menu to change scene modes after selecting "SP" on the Mode dial but it is still functional. It may be particularly appealing to X-S10 users coming from Canon Rebels or point-and-shoot cameras. Actually, scratch that last comment--I've been shooting for 20 years now and I still find some of the scene mode settings to be fun to experiment with.

    Thank you, Marteen for this great video! I just bought a X-S10 and am still new to the field of photography. There's lots to learn for me! I primarily want to take landscape photos of sunrises and sunsets which is very difficult to find the right settings for. Of all the ways to take a good HDR photo, which do you recommend as the best one? I have read about "expose for the highlights and adjust the shadows in post", auto exposure bracketing and the HDR mode on the fuji. Which do you think results in the best images?
    Looking forward to your reply. Thanks again for your insights!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You will get the best sunset/sunrise images by keeping the exposure slightly low as that increases the saturation of the colours. Expose for the brightest object (the sun) and then reduce the exposure slightly.
      As for HDR, the best technique is to bracket several exposures with a range 1-2 stops above/below and combine them using your computer.

    Thanks Maarten for a very helpful video. I'll be testing the camera this weekend and am considering purchasing it with the 70-300mm lens for bird photography as upgrade from a canon SX 60. My other 'larger' choice would be a second hand canon d7 mark 2 with the 1st generation 100-400mm lens which was a hit among nature photographers. Would you have any advice as I consider 'budget' options? The downside of the x-s10 is battery life, lack of weatherproofing and possibly slower auto focus?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A second battery, or simply powering the camera from a USB-C power delivery source are easy solutions to battery life. While the X-S10 is a great camera, I think you might be better off with the Canon solution.

    Hello Maarten. As always, you did a fabulous job of explaining the details of the menu of this camera. One question....for HDR you indicated that it would be necessary to do this in post....using a photo manipulation application. In reviewing the owner's manual for this camera (I'm considering buying one) on page 94 it says that the camera is capable of doing the stacking internally...like pretty much every other modern camera I've owned. Is it indeed possible to create the finished image in camera? Also, in auto mode will the camera automatically invoke HDR when warranted?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The camera does indeed have an in-camera HDR. The camera will not invoke that mode automatically. When you use HDR auto setting, it decides the amount of exposure differential between the three images that the in-camera HDR needs.
      What I was referring to in the video was exposure bracketing. When you use that feature, up to 9 images can be taken, and if you want to combine those into an HDR image, you'll have to do that in your photo software.

    Your videos are so detailed and incredibly useful! Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us!
    I had a couple suggestions for a video tutorial, first I own a fujifilm X-A5 that I love, and unfortunately after spending hours and hours online and combing through the online manual. They have no tutorial on Bulb mode:(
    The newer camera have it directly on the main dial but older ones don’t, and honestly I can’t find it anywhere:(
    Another suggestion if you have not done one already, would be going through all the settings in the camera, and just as you did show in this video, what box to check and why etc…
    Hope I didn’t cross the line by offering my thoughts, thank you so much

If I change the focusing area by touching the screen during the vide recording it often changes the iso/shutter speed also on bases of brightness of the focus area. I am more into heritage photography covering monuments. Considering it's compact size and silence of a mirror less I think it should be good. Can you give some tips on the suitable lens and ideal settings as I would be mostly shooting in daylight ( morning and evening times) and in the open. I need fast autofocus, handy to carry around and use it discreetly with a wide dynamic range . Please oblige with your learned views .

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your lens should be 23mm or wider (16 is probably ideal). Use a tripod, a smaller aperture (f11, f16), and a slower shutter speed. If the shutter duration is long enough (1/15 or more) then the pedestrians/tourists will blur or even disappear. You don't need fast autofocus as monuments tend to be very slow moving.

    Excellent! I understand the rules the camera follows for each of the Dynamic Range and DR Priority settings, but not the consequences. I’ve used Tone Curves on another camera, and in post, but I don’t know how the results for DR & DR Priority differ from tone curves. You chose “Strong” for DR Priority. Is that robust? Bad if you intended extreme contrast, with all highlights blown and all shadows black, I guess, but otherwise?

      First, my respect for understanding the rules of DR and DRP. I have no idea what they're up to. Mostly (as in the examples in the video) there's very little, if any, difference in the DR settings. Strong DRP just feels like an extremely flat tone curve. Note, of course, that these are JPEG effects, not RAW. I am grateful for your kind words.

    Hello dear sir. Another great guide for newcomers. I'm a video shooter mainly and I recently found out from the XT-30 tutorial from a TH-camr (I forgot the name) that in the video in the DR400 setting, if we use compensate dial to turn it -1 we obtain a good balance of highlight recovery and shadow detail, and if turned to -2, we recover the highlight completely while maintaining the shadows to the same level as before. Can you shed some light on this and verify or make a tutorial on this ?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is one approach, used when you're using Eterna film sim. However, I would recommend you use manual exposure, rather than auto with EV adjustment and just set the exposure (aperture or ISO) to reveal the details you need. There are lots of ways to play with the highlight/shadow curve to work with highlight and shadow details - I recommend staring with the classic chrome film sim. I'll put a video on this topic on my todo list. No promises.

      @MaartenHeilbron  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exposure compensation is a shortcut to adjust a setting that's otherwise automated. If none of the exposure settings - aperture, shutter, ISO - are auto, then you are in complete control, there's nothing the camera can adjust as "exposure compensation", as you've decided to control all of the settings.
      The EV display turns into a light meter to assist you in selecting the right settings. It's all explained and demonstrated here - "What to do when exposure compensation stops working". th-cam.com/video/oVT_H7ZeARw/w-d-xo.html

      There are three exposure settings - aperture, shutter duration and ISO. @@martinwolf2619 Lower your expectations. They were not designed nor sold as video lenses.
      If you have pro standards or aspirations for video work, the MKX series th-cam.com/video/URaTdC-1MSA/w-d-xo.html are recommended. However, if you are using non-video lenses, I recommend that you do not use continuous autofocus and that you do not zoom - particularly if you are aware of issues like breathing.

      @@MaartenHeilbron Yes, I know. Unfortunately Sony seems to be the better option for serious video work. For the beginning I would be happy with a prime lens which is capable of continuous AF and focus rack.

    According to Fuji Guys youtube channel, body is magnesium alloy, not plastic.

    Were your ancestors from Germany? Because i was born in Heilbronn ,-)

      I have no idea. Were there any Heilbrons in Heilbronn? My uncle used to tell a joke about going to the city hall in Heilbronn and asking if there was any inheritance that he could claim. :-) I was born in the Netherlands (as were my grandparents), quite close to the border, so anything is possible.

      @@MaartenHeilbron Not really, Heibronn means "sacred well". Perhaps someone called you "people from Heilbronn"... But you should try it. Heilbronn is the richest city in Germany ;-)

      @@thorstenbrand4803 That's interesting - I was previously told it meant healthy springs (like a spa). That's good to know, I'll keep that in mind.
